Genealogical Research by Diocese
The geographic area of Indiana is in
the ecclesiastical province of Indianapolis which includes the Archdiocese of Indianapolis (Indiana) and Dioceses of Evansville, Fort Wayne-South Bend, Gary and Lafayette
(Indiana).
Eastern-Rite Catholic Churches in Indiana.
Select
the diocese of interest above, or select the county of interest from the county
list below. (Or you may enter a church name or town in the "Find in
Page" option of your menu bar.)
Please note: The geographic area encompassed by the
Dioceses and Parishes may vary slightly from the civil town/county
boundaries. Generally, the earlier the
era being researched, the more likely the pastors and missionaries served a
wider geographic area, so it may be helpful to learn more about the development
of the dioceses (see History Notes), check neighboring counties, and research
the civil county/state boundaries of the era in question as well. Within the county area, I have tried to place
the parishes in order by the reported year of establishment (oldest to newest)
rather than by town or alphabetical order.
It is hoped this may help in identifying the still existing parishes
which were most likely to have been in existence during the time period being
researched.
Keep in mind some earlier churches no
longer exist, others have been renamed, and new churches have been built. Also, a church may have been in existence for
many years prior to its having a resident pastor...In such cases, it is likely
that the priests who visited the church (as a mission for instance) entered the
sacramental records in books at their own home parishes. Though an effort is being made to include
more information concerning such changes, this site is a work in progress. Should you find an error, or have helpful
information to add, please contact Ann.

In 1959, "The Indiana Catholic and
Record" reported that St. Philomena's Church was founded about 1842, the
first church being built in 1844, and a second church was built in 1870. St. Philomena's was located in Franklin
County, and, in 1959, was reported to be a mission of the Catholic Church at
Floyd Knobs. However, Alerding's book, A
History of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Vincennes, (Indianapolis: Carlon and Hollenbeck. 1883),
reports that St. Philomena's was attended by the pastors of St. Mary's of the
Rocks from the beginning. Since St.
Mary's-of-the-Rocks is much closer, it appears likely that it was, indeed, the
parish which would have been the most likely to tend to the congregation at St.
Philomena's.

caring for 3 parishes is so time-consuming, Father Robert requests that those
who desire records from these 3 parishes must come, in person, to St. Joseph's,
where all records for the 3 parishes, and the no longer existing parish of St.
Anthony's, in Richland Township, Benton County, are located, to search the
records. The time is not available to
answer mail requests.
