BR*N Methodist Considerations and Questions

from

BR*N Spelling of surname (Sos) Interchangeable

Some musings about the Lists,  Records,  and Locations,  on previous pages, perhaps eventually answering questions that might explain one ancestor’s occupation and travels (hmm...a Circuit Rider?).

This page is about identifying ancestors, though some text is specific to the religious affiliation, Methodist, as applied within the subject of genealogy.

Questions After Clues

Some notes about all the Methodist research:
Who Knew Finding Methodists Would Link BR*N(s)?

Methodist and One (Example) Ancestor.

There are clues suggesting reasonable links between BR*N ancestors (in at least this one line of descent) and Methodism, but first a little about that first record and John.

John BR*N

One page loose in a file and two days on-site resulted in a few of John’s locations, that is, after years of gathering together pieces and parts about his life and with a lot of help translating deed and land transaction records.

Yet the story continues.  There is more to be found now that John’s life is unfolding into a lovely story of education, meaningfulness, and what satisfactions can be had when one does not have ‘the finishing years.’

The Methodist Clues are opening new genealogical endeavors, beginning with that one loose page in McMinn County:  The Britton M. E. Church (613).

The above page (613), plus a lot of help with maps, various deed books, property tax assessments, and the twice repeated driving directions led to John’s former land (207) mentioned as sectioned for a (former) church (614), then school (611).  The cemetery (612) if still marked, is completely unknown under very tall weeds.

The present owners (names of living people  withheld)  have a log cabin, plus some really big, barking dogs.  While I did expect to see something, it was certainly not a log cabin that would be more than 160 years old.  Informative still were the rocks (as in forget farming), bends in the road, real ‘V’ curves (602), and a sense that if I could have just taken a path through the woods (606)...I would have been in Calhoun...so I just sat and looked.

The following ‘all caps’ notation is at the bottom of one of the two property assessment cards (603):  "STATE REMOVED OLD LOG CABIN."  A modern log cabin (607) can be viewed from the road.  It is a shame the people owning that property do not charge a sitting-fee for parking on that county road (601) and annoying their dogs.

You may well ask:

"Well, how do you know that is the same property?"
Good question, as it is the one I asked at the courthouse.  I was not the first to inquire, apparently, as ready answers were available via former title searches, going back to the original grants and deeds  (listed chronologically).

Anyway...that was how I discovered (apparently following the lead of many others) the surname: ‘Breeden’ for John Britten and many of the other surname spellings identifying him.  Just to be sure though, you can imagine I did appropriate map-gazing including now owning some really big maps of the ‘Hiwassee’ District (312).

By the way...If you know of an organization that would make these maps available to others, please type in and send me a note, and I will send the maps along.

Methodist and British Beginnings

Deciding to research on-line for some information about beginnings of Methodist in the US, landed me at the "official" British site (and very anti-USA, I might add).  Rather than give a timeline for Methodism in the US, this site gives some ’other’ US timeline.  Only Hope knows if the British Methodist timeline is historical.  Here is what I gleaned, with some questions beckoning forth:

Methodist and More Questions than Answers

What about TN (Tennessee), Greene Co., and Methodism?
Was there a Methodist Church in TN, Washington Co. in 1822, when John and Catharine married?

And, who would have the records to research about this possible relative link?
Why between Athens and Calhoun (608)?
Why County Road 734 (602) for a church and school?

Methodist and Continuing Churches in MO (USA, Missouri)

Why did John go to MO?
How did he get there?  Means of travel?
Was there a Methodist Church where John last resided?

Have an answer or two?

Yes, there is more to be learned about this BR*N constellation of people...
Methodist and Who was related to whom?
Methodist and Recorded BR*N Descendants?
Methodist and Leading A Significant Life?

A Conclusion to These Questions:  Religion and Your Ancestor Links

The above discussion was certainly for the purpose of inviting communications about Genealogy and Church Affiliations, specifically Methodist for just this one ancestor line and the surnames BR*N, but also to influence the addition of free genealogy records related to religion and surnames.  Perhaps you, too, have found such records key to linking ancestors?  We should be able to translate the message here to other religious links in our genealogical endeavors.
Peace.
