Rothwell of Ewerby and Stapleford


● STEPHEN ROTHWELL from Lancashire had a grant of arms from Flower, Norroy, 1st April 1585. He probably obtained land in Lincolnshire by his marriage to ELIZABETH , widow of ? Knight and dau. of ROBERT THOMPSON and his wife ALICE MASON. They had a son,

● WILLIAM ROTHWELL of Stapleford in Lincolnshire. He purchased the Impropriate Rectory of Stapleford in 1593. He was probably the William Rothwell, Gentleman of Stapleford, whose will was pr. on 22nd November 1599 (P.C.C. Kidd 83). He had issue,

RICHARD ROTHWELL, of whom presently.
Elizabeth Rothwell, who married Robert Thompson of Gautby in Lincolnshire. She died in 1615. Her will pr. 27th October 1615.

The son,
● RICHARD ROTHWELL of Stapleford, married at Ewerby in Lincolnshire on 19th November 1588 ELIZABETH AUMOND or BEETSON. This marriage probably brought him land at Ewerby. He died about 1618 leaving issue

1. Stephen Rothwell, baptized on 25th November 1593. He probably died young.
2. WILLIAM ROTHWELL, of whom presently.
3. Edward Rothwell of Haverholme in Lincolnshire. Baptized on 29th September 1605. He had issue

1. Edward Rothwell of Haverholme. He married ELIZABETH daughter of ROBERT CLIFTON. He presumably died s.p. by 1673 when his widow remarried her late husbands cousin RICHARD ROTHWELL of Ewerby and Stapleford (see below).
1. Mary Rothwell, wife of William Ward of Brafield in Northamptonshire. William died in 1686 and Mary died on 23rd April 1697. She was buried at Brafield with a monument to her memory. They had an only daughter and heir,

Elizabeth Ward (1674-1737) who married firstly Thomas Thornton of Brockhall and secondly William Trimnell, Dean of Winchester.

4. Richard Rothwell.
1. Elizabeth Rothwell, baptized on 27th November 1589. She probably died young.
2. Jane Rothwell, baptized on 31st March 1591. She was wife of Robert Standish of Dorrington.
3. Elizabeth Rothwell, baptized on 3rd August 1592. She probably died young.
4. Tabitha Rothwell, born ca. 1599. She mar. (lic. 28th January 1619) Simon Buck of Fleet.
5. Gaybe Rothwell, baptized on 2nd February 1600.
6. Elizabeth Rothwell, baptized on 3rd June 1602. She mar. (lic. 4th June 1616) William Thompson of Anwick in Lincolnshire. They had several children.
7. Anne Rothwell, baptized on 15th December 1603. She had lic. (12th January 1621) to mar. Roger Johnson of Kyme. Later she remarried Nicholas Stennywell.

The eldest son,
● WILLIAM ROTHWELL, was baptized on 3rd September 1595. He entered Gray's Inn on 8th February 1615. He was a Chief Constable, probably of Lincolnshire. About 1620 he married ALICE dau. and heir of GEORGE STOWE of Stapleford. William died on 4th April 1630. On 1st March 1636 at Stapleford his widow remarried George Neville of Thorney in Nottinghamshire. By George she was ancestress of the Nevills of Thorney. Alice was buried on 3rd August 1639. By William Rothwell she left issue

1. George Rothwell of Stapleford. He was born ca. 1623 and died s.p. His will was pr. 26th June 1656.
2. RICHARD ROTHWELL (Sir), of whom presently.
3. Andrew Rothwell.
4. William Rothwell of Stapleford. Living in 1656, his will was pr. 23rd July 1660 (P.C.C. Nabbs).
5. Stephen Rothwell of Lincoln. He was living in 1654.

The 2nd son,
Sir RICHARD ROTHWELL of Ewerby and Stapleford, was baptized on 28th November 1626. He succeeded his elder brother in the family estates in 1656 and was created a Baronet on 16th August 1661. Served as M.P. for Newark from 1677-81. He was nominated Sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1692. He mar. (lic. 12th February 1673) ELIZABETH dau. of ROBERT CLIFTON and widow of Edward Rothwell of Haverholme (see above). Sir Richard died s.p.m.s. in 1693 when the Baronetcy became extinct. His widow survived him, having had issue,

1. William Rothwell, baptized on 17th January 1675. He died young.
1. Elizabeth Rothwell, born about 1674. She mar. at Stapleford on 9th April 1691 Sir Thomas Willoughby, 2nd Baronet of Wollaton in Nottinghamshire and 1st Baron Middleton (cr. 1st January 1712). He died on 2nd April 1729 and was buried at Middleton in Warwickshire. Elizabeth died at Tong Castle in Shropshire. Her will admon. 25th February 1736. They had three sons,

1. Francis Willoughby, 2nd Baron Middleton, born on 29th September 1692. He died at Bath in Somerset on 31st July 1758 having had two sons who succeeded him in his peerage, but both died s.p.
2. Thomas Willoughby, born 11th June 1694. He died on 2nd December 1742 leaving several children including the 5th and later Barons Middleton.
3. Rothwell Willoughby. He probably died on 15th April 1752.

2. ANNE ROTHWELL, born about 1675. She mar. (lic. 16th February 1694) Sir THOMAS BARNARDISTON, 3rd Baronet of Kedington in Suffolk. He died on 12th November 1700 and was buried at Kedington on 21st November 1700. His will was pr. 14th February 1702. Anne died on 14th February 1701 and was buried at Kedington on 21st February 1701. Her will pr. 23rd July 1702. They had issue three daughters (see BARNARDISTON).
