WILLIAM MCFARLAND, FAIRFIELD COUNTY, by Jeann A. Woodford, in "Ohio Pioneers", Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) The Report 25:1 (1985), p. 18. (found at Bellingham FHC). William McFalrand, a very early settler in what is now Fairfield County, was born in Dauphin County, Penna., probably on 15 Jan 1758. He may have been the son of Walter and Margaret McFarland. ___He is listed in the Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Book v.50, under National #49662, as serving in the Revolution as a Private. He is also found listed in the Pennsylvania Archives, Series 2, Vol. 13, p151. He apparently received the title of "Captain" after the war. ___He brought his family to Fairfield County in 1799. A William McFarland signed a petition dated 22 Aug 1799, as reproduced in the Territorial Papers of the United States, Vol 3, p65. In 1801 he signed another petition dated 20 Feb 1801, shown on page 125 of the same volume. His lands were patented to him in 1809 but the deed was not recorded in Fairfield County until 1885 in Deed Book 56, page 211. He settled first near Hooker, but soon entered land in Section 19 Township 15 Range 19 in Greenfield Township. In 1801 a land grant certificated dated 30 November was issued at the Chillicothe Land Office to William McFarland for 510 acres in Fairfield County, Northwest Territory. ___He died 3 Aug 1839 and was buried in Hooker (or Wells) cemetery, a few yards south of Lithopolis Road. His headstone says he was aged 81 years 6 months and 18 days. His will, dated 29 Mar 1826, was probated on Sept 10, 1839 and is recorded in Will Book 3, p 46. It mentions wife Rebecca, sons Walter and John (deceased), John's sons William, Robert, and Walter, daughters Rebecca Parker, Margaret McFarland, Jane Trout (deceased) and Elizabeth Courtright, and Jane Trout's children, Rebecca, Margaret and Noah. ___He married Rebecca Foster before 1780. She was born probably in 1754 and died 12 Aug 1836 with burial in Hooker cemetery. Her headstone says she was aged 82 years 6 months and 18 days. ___The "Lancaster Gazette" (Fairfield County) for 10 Feb 1870 carried an obituary for his daughter Elizabeth: "died, Courtright, Elizabeth MCFarland. The deceased emigrated with her father Capt. William McFalrand of whom we have the following obituary notice in the Gazette of August 1839 (day not given, nor has this ussue been located). "Died at his residence in Greenfield township in the county, Augugst 3rd, -Capt. William McFarland aged 81 years. The deceased emigrated from Pennsylvania to the place of his late residence in the spring of 1799, when there were perhaps not 20 settlers in the territory which now forms Fairfield County, more than 2 years before the town of Lancaster was laid out..." ___His son, Walter, on his 81st birhtday, spoke to the editor of the "Lancaster Gazette" and others of his early experiences. "We listened with interest to our venerable friend's recital of some of his pioneer experiences; of his immigration, with his father, to what is now Ohio, in 1799; of the pitching of therir wagon-cover tent on a spot near the present junction of the 'Jefferson road' with the Lithopolis pike; of their tent life of several days until a log cabin was erected; of the purchase of 2 sections of land...at Government sale at Chillicothe; of the subsequent removal upon siad land, into a house hear his present residence." HISTORY: VIRGINIA, Bath County. Page 397-398. MCFARLAND FAMILY. The Macfarlane Clan was one of the Highland Clans in Scotland. They moved from Aryleshire, Scotland to Ireland about 1601, where the name changed from Macfarlane to McFarland. There have been no fewer than 23 Lairds of Macfarlane, the last of whom came to America early in the 18th century. _____1. Duncan McFarland (1), died in Bath County, Virginia; married Anne Porter, daughter of a sea captain. Duncan McFarland was a weaver and was in Augusta County before 1750. He settled on Jackson River in what is now Bath County, Virginia. Both are buried near the George Cleek Cemetery in Bath County, Virginia in unmarked graves. The McFarland family abandoned their cabin cave on the east side of Jackson River just opposite their cabin. From the cave they saw their home and personal belongings destroyed and their livestock tortured and killed. After several years of discouragement by being continually harassed by the cunning Indians, descendants of Duncan McFarland sold their real estate to Jacob Cleek in February 1792 and settled in that part of North Carolina which is now included in the state of Tennessee. _____Children: 4 (others?) _____2. i. Robert McFArland (2), died in 1798; married Esther Houston, daughter of John Houston (1669-1755) and Margaret Crawford. He qualified a Lieutenant on November 16, 1752 (Abstracts from the Records of Augusta County, Virginia, Lyman Chalkley, Vol. II, page 55). Their daughter, Anne McFarland (3), born 1723; married (1) in 1738, Captain Alexander Dunlap, born 1716; died 1744; married (2) in 1745, Robert Bratton, born May 20, 1712; died in 1785. (See Bratton Family). _____3. ii. John McFarland (2), called "Old Scotland John", married Mary Montgomery. He was one of the first Elders in the Old Stone Church in Augusta County, Virginia. Two of his grandsons were active in the early settlement of the Tennessee border territory. They were Colonel Robert McFArland (son of Robert McFarland) and Colonel John McFarland (son of Benjamin McFarland). Colonel John McFarland represented Jefferson County, Tennessee in the Legislature at Nashville in 1824. John McFarland (2) qualified as Ensign on November 16, 1752. William McFarland served in the Revolution. _____5. iv. Alexander McFarland (2). He was wounded in the Battle of Point Pleasant, October 10, 1774. (Ibid, Vol. I, page 254).
