HICKORY - Betty Ruth Mays Shuford, 63, of 2310 Sixth St. Court, SE, Hickory, passed away March 17, 2005, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a short period of declining health.
Born Sept. 15, 1941, Betty was the youngest daughter of the late James Columbus “Lummy” Mays and Annie Lue Laxton Mays.
Betty was a beloved wife, mother and homemaker. She was an active member of Highland Baptist Church for over 30 years, and she was recently actively participating in worship at Christ United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Mays and James Mays.
Survivors include a husband, Ronald Shuford of Hickory; three sons, Scot Shuford, Todd Shuford and Steve Shuford, all of Hickory; a daughter, Christa Shuford of Hickory; two daughters-in-law, Sherri Shuford and Dawn Shuford of Hickory; three grandchildren, Jessica Miller of Hickory and Starla Icenhour and Dustin Icenhour of Lenoir; a sister, Josephine Mays Spencer; a brother, Glenn Mays; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 20, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Kyker officiating.
Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

HICKORY - Ronald "Ronnie" Coleman Shuford, 69, of Hickory, passed away Friday, May 2, 2008, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, with his children by his side, after a very short period of declining health. Born Oct. 25, 1938, he was the son of the late Lucille Leatherman Shuford. Ronald was a beloved father, grandfather, husband and friend. He proudly served his country as a member of the 82nd Airborne division of the U.S. Army. He was employed at Merchants Distributors Inc. for more than 40 years. Among his many great accomplishments, he was known as the best warehouse manager in the country and was presented "The President's Award"at MDI during his career. Upon retirement in 2000, he began working with his son and daughter at Premier Screen Printing of Hickory until the present. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church for more than 30 years and was most recently participating in worship at Christ United Methodist Church in Hickory. In addition to his mother, Ronald was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Mays Shuford, and his brother, Tommy Shuford. Survivors include his daughter, Christa Shuford of Hickory; sons, Scot Shuford, Todd Shuford and Steve Shuford, all of Hickory; two daughters-in-law, Sherry Shuford and Dawn Shuford, both of Hickory; and three grandchildren, Dustin Icenhour, Starla Icenhour and Jessica Miller. Receiving was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. The service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Christ United Methodist Church in Hickory, with Pastor Charles Kyker officiating. The body will be placed in the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m., prior to the service. Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Ronald Coleman Shuford.
