John B Campbell born abt 1809. Son of Joseph Campbell and Catherine Bentley. Dorcy born abt 1814, Iredell Co, NC. Daughter of Absolom Mays and Jane Walker. Dovie is living with son William in 1900, Alexander Co, NC in the Sugar Loaf community. She died before the 1910 census.

John and Dovie lived Alexander Co, NC 1850 with their two sons, Joseph born 1839 and William born 1834.


From Absolom Mays letter written April 1 1865 he wrote in detail about his children:

"My oldest child, Dorcy, married John Campbell. They live in Alexander County. They have two children, both sons. My daughter Elizabeth Amanda married James Wilson about 1855. She has a son. After that he treated her very badly. He ran away and left her: went to Illinois. From there he went to Iowa and has accumulated some property. As soon as the law of state would permit, she married again to George Allison. They live near Statesville and have 7 children. My daughter Miranda married J. Wilson McCleland. They live near me with 9 children. My son B. Nelson Mays died in 1846, aged 24. My son James Calvin married Martha Grey. They have 3 sons dead and one child living. My daughter Laura & son Hamilton live with me. I and your aunt Jane Mays, my wife, are old and weak, scarcely able to do anything. I am 75 years old."

The two sons are:

1. William Franklin Campbell born 26 Oct 1834 and died 9 Jun 1914, Iredell Co, NC. Married Elizabeth Ann Foster born 9 Mar 1841 in Wilkes Co., NC, and died 22 Aug 1909 in Taylorsville, Alexander Co., NC.

2. Joseph Campbell born 1839, I know nothing else about him at this time.

DEATH CLAIMS R. F. CAMPBELL AT HOME HERE Rites on Wednesday At Walnut Grove Baptist Church

Robert Franklin Campbell, sixty-three, died at his home at 1130 Fifteenth Street at 10:15 a.m. today, following a long illness. An invalid for the last two years, Mr. Campbell suffered a severe heart attack Sunday afternoon. A native of Alexander County, he was born in the Bethel Church community of that county on May 13, 1876, the son of the late Franklin and Betty Foster Campbell. Mr. Campbell was married to Miss Jessie Margaret Bentley on December 21, 1904, and the couple moved to Illinois, where he was a successful farmer until his health failed sixteen years ago. They made their home in Chesterville, Ill., for nineteen years and moved to Hickory about twelve years ago. Mr. Campbell was a member of the Masonic lodge at Taylorsville, and was affiliated with the Baptist church. The funeral services will be held at Walnut Grove Baptist church, between Taylorsville and North Wilkesboro, at two-thirty o'clock Wednesday afternoon. In addition to his widow, Mr. Campbell is survived by four sons and four daughters, as follows: Mrs. Glayde Kerley of Suffolk, Va., who will arrive in Hickory tonight; LeRoy Campbell of Mooresville; Mrs. Edd Townsend, James F., Orville, and Charles Campbell, and Misses Elizabeth and Mary Ann Campbell, all of Hickory. There are five grandchildren. Mr. Campbell had eight brothers and sisters, five of whom survive, J.A. Campbell of Harmony, near Statesville; Ed Campbell of Taylorsville; Mrs. Jones Barnes, Kansas City, Mo.; Will Campbell, LaFlore, Okla., and Mrs. Myrtle Osborne, Charlotte.

A short funeral Service was held at the home on Fifteenth street at one o'clock this afternoon for Robert Franklin Campbell, who died Tuesday morning after a long illness. Rev. R. K. Redwine, pastor of the First Baptist church, was in charge of the service there. The body was then taken to the Walnut Grove Baptist church, between Taylorsville and North Wilkesboro, for services, conducted by Rev. C. C. Holland of Taylorsville and Rev. Mr. Redwine. Burial was made there, nephews of Mr. Campbell serving as pallbearers.

MRS. ROBERT F. CAMPBELL - AREA NATIVE RITE HERE LENOIR - Mrs. Robert F. Campbell, 83, of 428 South Main Street, Lenoir, died in a Morganton nursing home late Saturday afternoon after a long illness. The former Jessie Bentley, she was born in Wilkes County, Aug. 13, 1885, a daughter of the late James E. and Josephine Brown Bentley. Her husband, whom she married in 1904, died in 1939.

Services Today

Funeral services were held this morning at ten o'clock at First Baptist church in Lenoir. The Rev. Fred D. Barnes, the Rev. Billy Rivers, the Rev. Robert Frye, and the Rev. Rowe Teague officiated. Burial was in Walnut Grove Baptist church cemetery in Wilkes County. Surviving are three sons, Leroy Campbell, president of Hickory Shoe Lace Company, of Hickory; J. Orville Campbell, publisher of the Chapel Hill Weekly, of Chapel Hill; and Judge Charles Campbell of Reidsville; four daughter, Mrs. Ed (Myrtle) Townsend of Hickory, Mrs. Glayde (Cleo) Kerley of Louisburg, Mrs. Robert (Mary Ann) White of Winter Park, Fla., and Miss Elizabeth Campbell of Lenoir; one brother, Mack Bentley of Moravian Falls; 19 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. One son, Jimmy Campbell, preceded Mrs. Campbell in death. She lived in Hickory for over thirty years, during the years she was rearing her family. She was known throughout the area for her practical nursing. Seventeen years ago, she moved to Lenoir to live with her daughter, Elizabeth, and during those years she assisted Elizabeth as much as she could in her work as a Baptist Association Missionary. Mrs. Campbell acted as hostess at the home. She was a member of First Baptist Church while in Hickory but had since joined First Baptist Church in Lenoir. For many years, in both of the two churches, Mrs. Campbell was superintendent of the nursery department. Until her health failed, Mrs. Campbell was active in Woman's Missionary Union.

Elizabeth Campbell

Elizabeth J. Campbell, 89, of Shaire Center Dr., Lenoir, died Saturday, June 19, 2004 at the Shaire Center.

She was born Jan. 22, 1915 in Chesterville, Ill. to the late Robert F. and Jessie Bentley Campbell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, R. Leroy Campbell, James F. Campbell both of Hickory, Orville B. Campbell of Chapel Hill, and Charles W. Campbell of Reidsville, two sisters, Mrs. Cleo Kerley of Taylorsville, and Mrs. Myrtle Townsend of Hickory.

Miss Campbell served as director of missions in the Caldwell Missionary Baptist Association from June 1, 1944 to Dec. 31, 1980. She graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1944 with a Bachelor of Religious Education degree. She was also a graduate of Mars Hills College where she received an A.A. degree. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lenoir.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Robert White of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lenoir, conducted by Dr. David B. Smith. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow in Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Moravian Falls.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
