She was a native of Caldwell County, daughter of the late Julius and Betty Lou Hoyle Duncan, wife of the late Paul O'Shields, member of First Assembly, owner-operator of Espia's Beauty Shop for more than 30 years.

GRANITE FALLS - Mrs. Nina Elizabeth Hoyle Summerlin, 86, of York Road, Granite Falls, passed away Friday, April 29, 2005, at Caldwell County Hospice.

Mrs. Summerlin was born in Caldwell County to the late James W. and Ida Eddis Whisnant Hoyle. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Poovey�s Grove Baptist Church, where she was a nursery worker and devoted to Bible School for 55 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Carl Summerlin, and two sisters, Bonnie Yount and Margaret Fulbright.

Survivors include three sons, Boyce C. Summerlin of Summerton, S.C., Connard C. Summerlin of Manning, S.C., and Charles C. Summerlin of Granite Falls; one sister, Betty Hollar, of Rhodhiss; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Jim Hamby at 10 a.m. Monday at Granite Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight, Sunday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Caldwell County Hospice, 902 Kirkwood St., NW, Lenoir, N.C. 28645. Pallbearers will be Boyce Summerlin, Connard Summerlin, Charles Summerlin, Randy Summerlin, Fred Summerlin and Mark Summerlin.

LENOIR - James Ray Hoyle, 77, of Granite Falls, went to meet our Lord on Aug. 27, 2005. He was born June 7, 1928, to the late Theodore (T.R.) and Altha Lou Miller Hoyle.

He resided in Woodside Terrace and was a member of North Catawba Baptist Church. He retired from General Electric after 26 years of employment.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, who died at birth; and a sister, Edith H. Burch. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Betty Cannon Hoyle; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Dianne and husband, Paul Barnes, of Lenoir; three granddaughters, Paula Farthing and husband, David, Gena Greer and husband, Sam, and Teresa Byerly and husband, Kyle; six great-grandchildren, Tyler and Taylor Farthing, Seth and Katie Byerly, Brandon Parsons and Hunter Greer; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends tonight, Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Pendry�s Lenoir Funeral Home and Crematory. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the North Catawba Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Barnhardt officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Barnes, Larry Barnes, Arnold Barnes, Danny Joe Harrison, Tyler Farthing and Brandon Parsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Seth Byerly and James Hunter Greer.

James Ghent Starbuck II, 61, of Burke County, N.C., died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at Catawba Hospice and Palliative Care.

He was born Nov. 30, 1944, in Caldwell County to Hazel Duncan Shumaker of Granite Falls and the late James Ghent Starbuck I.

Mr. Starbuck was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church of Hickory.

He is surived by his son, James Ghent Starbuck III and wife Carolyn of Hildebran; his daughter, Shannon Starbuck Nichols of Hickory; two grandsons, James Cortney Starbuck of Hickory and Zachary Thomas Nichols of Hickory; his granddaughter, Ashley Danielle Nichols of Hickory; three sisters, Shirley Shumaker Kiziah and husband Ron of Hudson, Sandra Shumaker of Granite Falls, and Sherri Shumaker Hollar and husband Hugh of Evans, Ga.; his brother, Paul A. Shumaker Jr. and wife Ann of Granite Falls; his step-father, Paul A. Shumaker Sr. of Granite Falls; a step-brother, Steve Shumaker and wife Beverly of Hickory; a step-sister, Regina Shumaker of Hickory; a step-grandson, James Ray Whisnant of Hildebran; a step-great-granddaughter, Emma Rose Whisnant of Hildebran; a special loved one, Carolyn Jenkins of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral services for Mr. Starbuck will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at First Baptist Church of Granite Falls with Dr. Robert Evans Jr. and the Rev. Tom McDonald officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery.

Minnie Gilbert Dula, 71, of Ransom Place, Lenoir, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005 at the residence.

She was born Jan. 12, 1934 in Caldwell County to Mrs. Lizzie Lackey Gilbert of Granite Falls and the late Martin Gilbert. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ranson H. Dula and three brothers, Billy Gilbert, Ivy Gilbert and Joe Gilbert.

Mrs. Dula was retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries and was a member of Poovey's Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to her mother, include three sons, Edward Duncan and wife, Kathy of Charleston, S.C., Phillip Duncan and wife, Janice and Kenneth Duncan and wife, Penny all of Lenoir; a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Mary) Franklin of Hudson; a brother, Richard Gilbert of Granite Falls; four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Chambers and Mrs. Josephine Stillwell both of Rhodhiss, and Mrs. Delores Keller and Mrs. Patsy Spradling both of Granite Falls; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 13, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Poovey's Chapel Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Nicky Waters and Rev. James E. Lee. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Monday, Dec. 12, 2005 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

Phillip Martin Duncan, 52, of Lenoir, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at home.

He was born Jan. 9, 1955, in Caldwell County to the late Roy S. and Minnie Gilbert Duncan.

Mr. Duncan was employed by Broyhill Furniture Industries for 35 years and attended Calvary Advent Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Mrs. Janice E. Duncan of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Stacey Helton and husband Charles of Lenoir, and Mrs. Brandy Blythe and husband David of Granite Falls; two brothers, Edward Duncan and wife Kathy of Charleston, S.C., and Kenneth Duncan and wife Penny of Lenoir; one sister, Mrs. Mary Franklin and husband Dale of Hudson; five grandchildren, Abbey Holman, Cortlyn Blythe, Koda Blythe, Ava Helton and Dayton Helton; three nieces and four nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Advent Christian Church conducted by the Rev. Jim Lee. Interment will follow at Clearview Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
