Last Update 6/23/2008.
I know very little about Matilda Mays at this point. Ed Lyons has her listed as having two children. According to Susanna Mays letter Aug 6 1876 to John Mayse "sister Tildy is dead". So we know that she died before 1876. The letter also states that "sister Tildys family is all well." We know that she did infact have a family. Please read my theory at the bottom of this page.
Matilda Mays was born 6 May 1814. She was the daughter of Larkin Benjamin Mays and Edith Stansbury.

3. Nancy Hollar - I have found nothing on this individual.
I have come to a few conclusions about Matilda Mays. I do believe she was the daughter of Larkin Benjamin Mays and Edith Stansbury. I believe she had one or possibly two children out of wedlock. Being Jackson Mays and possibly Nancy. I also believe she married a man with the last name Stine.
I believe she married a relative of her brother Madison Wayne Mays wife, Sarah "Sallie" Stine. She was living at John's River Caldwell Co, NC in 1850 but Madison's wife had died before 1855 because he remarried. Matilda had children that were born in Indiana. Living in the household of (1850) Matilda Stine 36 born Wilkes Co, NC Susan 16(born 1834) born Indiana, Sarah 14(born 1836) born Indiana, Jemima 11(born 1839) born Indiana, James 5 (born 1845) born Indiana.
We know that Madison Wayne Mays was in Indiana 27 Jul 1835 because there is a marriage record (Family History Library Salt Lake City Utah OS Page 1295699)
I believe both Matilda and Madison Mays married into the same Stine family. They both had children in Indiana.
By 1860 There is no record of Matilda Stine in Indiana or North Carolina. But there is a Silda Gilbert living next door to Susanna Mays Hartley in Carter Co, TN. Guess who is living in Silda's (Matilda)household? James Stine age 14 born in Indiana!
This Silda Gilbert had two other children. Edmond Gilbert born abt 1852 and Jane Gilbert 1854. If you follow Edmond Gilbert, he never left the area. He is still living close to his Aunt Susanna Mays Hartley Bash in 1880 and 1900.
Susanna Mays Hartley wrote a letter to her brother John Calvin Mays.
August 6, 1876 . Mr. John.Mayse
Dear Brother and sister it is with pleasure I drop you these few lines to let you know that I am not well and have not been for two years but I hope these few lines may find you well. Calvin Hartly went of f in the beginning of the war and I have not seen him since. I have nothing of importance to right to you only my family is all well. Father and Brother James and James Hamlet and family went to Illinois before the war and I have heard they was all dead. Sister Tildy is dead. Brother Morgan’s family is living where they was when you left and was all well the last account. Sister Tildy’s family is all well. I do not live where I did when you left this country. I have moved to Tennessee on the Elk river 5 miles from Duggers Forge. John I want you to come and see me if you possibly can and I want to know if you know anything of Brother Burten. And if you do give him my best respects and I want him to come and see me. John I did not know what had become of you. First there was a man by the name of Ninevolh Ford ( bet his name is Kenneth Ford) told me he was here and give me the name of the post office and told me it was great country. I would like to be there with my family if I could. I have one thousand things I would like to tell you, but I do not know as I shall ever see you if you do not come to this country. As soon as you receive this say hand me some paper. I want you to write soon and often and do come and see. From your most affectionate sister Susanna . From Callaway Hartly. Dear uncle I want to know if that is a good country for a young man. If it is I have an idea of trying to go there. Write to me and let me know whether I had better come or not. Write soon. Direct your letters Elk Mills Carter Co, East Tenn.
If you will notice the date. 1876. The letter states "sister Tildy is dead." and it also states "sister Tildy's family is all well." Implying that sister Tildy does infact have a family.
My theory is that Matilda Mays had children out of wedlock, married a man with the last name of Stine and married secondly to a man with the last name of Gilbert. At some point Matilda Mays was living in Indiana. She moved back to NC by 1850. She moved to Carter Co TN to be near her sister Susanna Mays Hartley Bash between the census of 1850 and the census of 1860. I believe Susanna Mays Hartley Bash knew all about her sister Tildy's (Matilda) family because they were close by. Carter Co, TN was just across the North Carolina state line.
By 1870, I believe she died.
In 1892 we have another letter written by Nancy Day Mays (wife of Morgan Mays - son of Larkin Benjamin Mays)that states "You want to know what became of your brother Wain & you sister Susan. Your brother Wain was in this contry a little while before your Father & brother James moved from this country and started back to the Indiana to his children and I have not heard from him since & Susan the old man Jake [Jack] Robbins said today that she married Calvin Hartley, old Benjamin Hartlys son." This letter was to John Calvin Mays son of Larkin Benjamin Mays. Larkin Benjamin Mays moved to Jefferson Co, IL with his daughter Minerva and her family and his son James. We have pension papers that states he moved to IL in 1854.
Also we have proof that Matilda's brother Morgan M Mays was in Indiana in 1847. Morgan and Nancy Day Mays had a son named James in Indiana. Morgan Mays died in Indiana. I believe, Matilda, Madison Wayne and Morgan M all were in Indiana at some point.
