William Jackson Low and Martha E. Low are buried in Romney Cemetery where Romney, Eastland County used to be. When we found the cemetery, his grave did not have a stone on it, but hers had a nice granite column on it. The family story is that he did not deserve a stone, because he was a " Damn Yankee". There has since been a stone to mark his grave, but I honestly believe he probably had the stone put on Martha E. and when he died years later, he had not made provisions for himself.
There was an article in the Dennison, Texas Sunday Gazetteer of June 16, 1885 on page 3 column 4 headlined "Strung Up".
Strung Up
The two Dyer brothers confined to the Bonham County jail charged with the murder of sheriff Ragsdale and his deputy Buchanan were taken out by a party of masked men last Monday night about 2:30 and hanged to a tree a short distance from the jail. After the two men were strung up the avengers quietly dispersed.
The jailer was forced to give up the keys to the jail at the muzzle of a pistol. So quietly was the affair managed that no one outside of the parties directly interested knew of the hanging until daylight.
The bodies were cut down early in the morning and an inquest held. The jury gave a verdict in accordance with the above facts.
The people of Bonham profess to not know who the masked men are and probably no attempts will even by the officials to discover their identity.
The Dyers were bad men and the general verdict is that they deserved to be put to death. Mob law is however an evil and the law's delay is responsible for it. The people are heartily tired of seeing cold blooded murders given their penalty of their crime by procrastination and the performance of money.
