Samuel M. Burton was born in De Kalb County Tennessee in 1847 to Thomas J. and Sarah Burton. He met Louisa Hill in Jefferson County Illinois, and in January 1862 they were married. They had a daughter, Amanda Elizabeth Burton, January 1863. In October 1864, Samuel M. Burton was drafted in the 42nd Regiment, Illinois Infantry as a private soldier at Olney Illinois. By November, the unit had made it to Franklin County Tennessee, where Samuel M. was put in the hospital in December. One report says that he died ion December 25, 1863 of a lung disease. Another report says that he died January 14, 1864 of malaria.
