Ethel Leora Snyder was born on 30 October 1910 at Holman Township, Osceola County, Iowa. Dr. FS Hough was the attending physician. He recorded date of birth as November 39th. Ethel became aware of date and veridied with her mother that October 30 was correct and a recording error had been made..1 The poem Mom wrote about her life with Bud - read at Golden Wedding anniversary

The Tale of Ethel and Bud
The tale began in Iowa in January 1932 When Bud decided Ethel Was the girl he would woo
After three years of dating
And planning far ahead
On March 6th, 1935 Their marriage vows were said.
Their attendants were Marie- Bud's sister and husband, Glen.
It was the depression years
So, no elaborate wedding then.
It also was Bud's birthday
So, there was no excuse to forget
The anniversary date each year
On that you can bet.
The childred came one by one
Three times Doc said, "It's a boy"
Each one brought parents
Their own troubles and their joy
The first 15 years of marriage
They farmed someone else's land
Til Bud decided it was time
To take an independent stand.
So it was 1950
They left their native Iowa state,
For their own land in Minnesota
Where they have turned out great.
The years sped by and the boys grew up
And soon were on their own.
The parents soon discovered
They were once more all alone.
Late in March, in 1968
Their house burned to the ground
A mobile home soon took its place
A comfortable home they found.
As the grandchildren were expected,
They thought girls would be nice,
They now have six granddaughters with only one grandson to add spice.
In 1974, retirement took priority
Over working hard each day.
They work when the spirit moves
Leaving ample time for them to play
When weather cools off in the fall, I
t's time to leave cold behind
They take their camper to go
To a climate that is more kind. The most important person
To come to them this year Is the first great granddaughter
They're awfully proud she's here
This brings us up to date
In the story of their life
Which all began when Bud Asked Ethel to be his wife.

She died on 26 August 2009 at Crossroads Care Center, Worthington, Nobles County, Minnesota, at age 98. Mom’s notes. Apparently Mom made more than one attempt to write an obit. In addition to 2 different versions, I found a third that starts in 1931
1.      Ethel McConkey was born the second daughter to Harry & Maude Extrom Snyder Oct. 30, 1910.
At an early age she moved with her parents to a farm near Storm Lake, Ia. A sister was born there.
In 1914 the family moved to a farm near Borups MN.
She started school there. In 1917 they returned to Storm Lake farming. Her father then decided to work for Standard Oil. He was moved to Casselton ND in 1919 then to Benson Minn in 1920. He drove the first Bulk Tank taking fuel to the farmers that standard Oil had in Minn. 2 sons joined the family. They remained there until 1923 when her father wanted to go back to the farm. They farmed near Hancock.
Ethel graduated from Hancock in 1927. She attended Normal Training at Benson & taught in rural schools for 3 years.
When Grandpa Snyder was retiring Harry decided he’d like to live on the home farm near Storm Lake. In the fall of 1931 the family returned to Iowa. Harriet had one year of High School so she stayed with a family there to finish H. S. Ethel completed her 3rd yr of teaching.
2.      Doris was born at Sibley, Ia. Feb 20, 1909. I was born there Oct 30, 1910. The folks moved to Storm Lake Ia in 1911.
Harriet was born May 11, 1913. My parents were farmers and dad moved around a lot. He bought a farm near Borup in 1914. In the Red river valley where it flooded nearly every spring. Mom said one year the chickens didn’t get off the roosts for 2 weeks. We moved to a larger farm near Felton Mn in 1915. Because the first school was so far away & in Felton there was a consolidated school with bus service Doris did not go & the next fall I could go too.
Mom had taught us a lot of things so 2 months in Kindergarten and we were moved to 1st grade. In 1918 we moved back to Storm Lake, Ia. Also a consolidated school district. Minnesota school were considered more advanced than Iowa that we were just in 3rd grade.
My dad and Uncle Ralph decided to work for Standard Oil so we were moved to Casselton No. Dak. Where they operated a (it stops here.)
3.      I met Bud in the fall of 1931 when I went with a second cousin of mine to her class of 1929 & the class of 1930 picnic. Bud had graduated in 1930 from Hayes Consolidated School south of Storm Lake. Zoa Mudge graduated in 1929. We were together a lot. I was just 3 day older than she was & our folks were together for card games, picnics, ets. Her father was dad’s cousin.
In Feb of 1932 a friend of mine & I were uptown Storm Lake on a Sat evening. The common way to spend Sat evening then. We met a friend of hers & Bud. Her friend asked her to go somewhere with him so she said they would take me home. Bud said “I’ll take Ethel home.” So that was OK with me. I had seen him several times through the winter at different gatherings.
So began 3 years of dating & enjoying different things, shows, picnics, family gatherings etc. He had 1 sister & 4 older brothers married & living near Storm Lake (1 sister and 1 brother still at home) & I enjoyed getting to know them. My sisters were away from home. Harriet was married Dec 14, 1932. The folk’s silver wedding. She lived in Minn. Doris was in Delaware as a nurse. My brothers were 10 & 11 years younger than I so didn’t go much with them.
In Jan 35 we decided we would like to get married. We had to have a job & a place to live. A farmer south of Alta advertised for a man to help farm. He had a tenant house to live in. We got the job so we were married on March 6, 1935, Bud’s 23rd birthday at Spencer, Ia. Marie & Glen were attendants. The job paid $35 per month, our milk & some meat & a house. They milked a lot of cows so were up by 5 o’clock & worked late hours in the field. He was very demanding & critical. In early June Bud went out to milk & he was a few minutes late & was bawled out for that. He immediately quit & came back to the house. We moved our small supply of furniture to his folks & he worked for his dad & other farmers for about a month when we go another job. A batchler south east of Storm Lake needed help. We lived with him & I cooked, cleaned & did his washing. I got ½ the egg money & cream check for his share of the groceries. He said one day I could have all the egg money & he’d eat his half of the eggs & he did. He always had a big garden which helped. He helped take care of it too. We were getting $ 35 per mo. There too. We were there nearly 3 yrs. In Feb 38 when I found out I was pregnant we decided we would like to have a place alone. They was a farm just a mile south of Tom’s for rent so we rented it. My dad & Bud’s dad helped us get started with machinery & we borrowed some money.
The house had a furnace but no inside stairway to the basement so in the winter Bud would have to get up & dress & go to the basement to put more wood in the fire as we couldn’t afford coal.
Jerry was born on Nov 7, 1938. I was in the hospital 10 days & my Dr bill was $ 25 for the hospital & $ 25 for Dr. Swallum.
The farm was not a very productive farm so after 2 years we rented an 80 A farm near Truesdale. So we moved there in Feb. 1940. Bud raised a lot of hogs & milked a few cows. LeRoy was born Sept 17, 1940.
In 1944 Bud’s folks decided to quit farming & move to Storm Lake & they had a 3 yr’s lease on the farm just north of storm Lake & there was 1 ear left so they said we could move there. A larger & better farm. When the 1 year lease was up we thought we could rent it again but he wanted to sell it. So it was move again. We moved to a farm near Early, Iowa. There we raised cattle & hogs & had more land to farm.
Kenny was born April 5, 1946. We were there 2 yrs & the landlord wanted to raise the rent & wouldn’t fix anything, so we got a nicer place near Schaller. There we had a large pasture for cattle. The sunflowers were so thick in the fields that they had to spend a lot of time walking fields & the second year it was nice. Then the landlord decided he wanted to farm it. Bud said if we couldn’t buy something he would quit.
We came to southern Minn & found a farm we could buy. We sold all our cattle & had a $10,000 down payment. We moved here in Feb. 1950. We gave $190 per A for our farm.
     We enjoyed our years here.
The boys all graduated from Brewster school.
Bud retired in 1974 & rented the farm to Leo Baumgard.
In Dec 1974 we flew to Hawaii & spent 2 weeks with LeRoy.
In 1975 we went to Florida in Jan. Several of Bud’s relatives were there. LeRoy was in Puerto Rico so we flew from Miami for 3 weeks in Puerto Rico. From Puerto Rico to St. Thomas Is. For a day trip. Then spent some time with Doris & John at Del Ray Beach Fla.
In June of 1980 we went to Loveland Colo. For Bud’s 50th class reunion. There were only 4 in his class. Chas Ford who lived there, Alice Arms Dewey of Mysls & Laef Shadwick of Denver, Iowa.
Had our Golden Wedding on March 6, 85. Celebrated at Bayview. LeRoy came from Fort Sill. Sam, Happy & Clara, Burt & Lois came from southern Texas.
     Celebrated in April in Brewster.
Also a 55th yr celebration of Bud’s graduation. All were here.
