We are gathered here
this day to remember one
William Archey Cole,
not just as the husband
and father he was, but as a brave soldier of the
Confederate States Of America.
For it is under this
marker his body now lies and is
celebrated.
The sound of their bugles
have long since died in the
distance of time.
Generations have lived and passed
away.
History was written by the victors and the
opinions of our children influenced by that
consequence.
William Archey Cole, fought in many battles,
not the
least of which was Shiloh.
Consider for a moment - had William Archey fell
at
Shiloh, how this gathering
here today, would be altered.
How very fragile is the flow of
life.
How magnificent is the
contribution of a single human.
This man was a brave soldier. We know this to be a
fact, because he stood in the line of twenty-one battles.
To stand and face death that many times without
faltering, is indeed proof of this.
And so, today we honor our kinsman. A soldier of the
Southern Confederacy, who fought to uphold the
right
declared by the pen of Jefferson and achieved by the
sword of Washington.
With noble self-sacrifice, battled to preserve the
independence of the states which was established by
the fathers.
Motivated by genuine patriotism, he and his kind
performed deeds of bravery such as thrill the heart of
mankind with admiration to this very day.
And so - after over 80
years, and four generations, we
stand to honor and remember you again,
William A. Cole.
