Reggie Giddens Repeater on All-Star 11

By Bob Gockley, 1951

Oyster Bay's brilliant end, Reggie Giddens, is the only repeater on the 1951 Nassau County Class B All-Scholastic team, chosen today by the Nassau Dailey Review - Star.

In accordance with a policy established several years back, two teams have been picked for All-Scholastic honors.  The triple A Conference team will be released tomorrow.

Giddens, who seems a cinch to repeat on the All-Metropolitan team, was the only unanimous choice on the 11-man squad.  Nassau's two unbeaten and untied clubs, South Side and Great Neck, captured two places on the honor squad, as did the Oceanside Sailors.

The remaining four positions went to East Rockaway, Garden City, Manhasset and Woodmere.  Players were chosen after a poll of Nassau's football coaches.

Burt Murray of Woodmere leads ...[unreadable]... Blue Jacket quarterback, a standout performer on both offense and defense, sparked the Branch eleven to its best season in over a decade.

A pair of fleet-footed gazelles occupy the halfbacks slots in the persons of Manhasset's Jim Brown and Tony Russo of Oceanside, either of whom was an immediate threat the moment he got his hands on the ball.

Great Neck's triple-threat star, Art Weichbrodt, rounds out the backfield at the fullback post.  Weichbrodt was a natural choice, spearheading the Blazers to their first unbeaten season since 1943.

Giddens running-mate is Pete Ouzounian of East Rockaway, who, despite early season injuries, was a standout performer for the Rocks at both the end position and in the backfield.

South Side's coach, Don Sterner, maintained all season that he had the two best tackles in the county and apparently his colleagues shared the same opinion.

At any rate, both Dick Knight and John Siderius were elevated to the honor team.  The Cyclones, in sweeping to their fourth unbeaten season in the last five years, save....[unreadable]............games.

The center on the Class B. team is Bruce Lunsford of Garden City, flanked by Mike Podell of Great Neck and Pete Damone of Oceanside at the guards.

Bruce is being closely scrutinized by college scouts.  Podell was injured in the Port Washington game and missed the Westbury scuffle, while Damone was a 60-minute man throughout the campaign.
