Adams, John

The venerable John Adams, the second President of the United States, and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence - is no more.  He died in Quincy, near Boston, on the 4th of July, at about 5 o'clock P. M. "From the Essex Register", "On the Jubilee of Independence his declining faculties were roused by the rejoicings in the metropolis.  He inquired the cause of the salutes, and was told it was the fourth of July.  He answered, "It is a great and glorious day."  He never spake more. Thus his last thoughts and words which evinced a soul replete with love of country and interest in her welfare.   Aug. 15, 1826

Hyde, Horace P.

We learn by a person who left Arkansas about ten days ago, that Mr. Horace P. Hyde, between Arkansas and the Chickasaw Bluffs, since the establishment of that route, is supposed to be drowned.  He left the mouth of White river about three or four weeks since, with the mail in a canoe, for Arkansas and has not been heard of since.  The canoe, however, was found the next day after he started, in the cut-off between the Arkansas and White Rivers.  The mail, together with Mr. Hyde's pocket book containing about $50. in money, which had been entrusted to him to convey to Arkansas and some articles of wearing apparel, were found in the canoe and have all been delivered to the postmaster at Arkansas.  (Note:  They refer to Arkansas Post)  Mar. 25, 1823
