First found in Cumberland where they were seated from early times.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Andrew Armstrong, who was constable of the Ferryland district, Newfoundland, in 1730; the Armstrongs also settled in Bay Bulls, Trepassey, St. John's, Witless Bay, and others.
