Greenhaw Family Historiography

The Greenhaw Coat of Arms is "Silver; on a black diagonal band, three silver buglehorns stringed gold." The Crest above the shield and helmet is: "A black buglehorn stringed gold."

It is a very old and distinguished family name and is recorded in Burke's General Armoury, British authentic genealogist, according to Nancy Halbert of Halbert's Inc., genealogists of Bath, Ohio.

Family mottos are believed to have originated as battle cries in medieval times.  Not all family names were recorded with a Motto.  A Motto was not recorded with the Greenhaw Coat of Arms.

Surnames were not in use until after 1100 A.D.  The surname Greenhaw, locational in origin and associated with the English, means "dweller at the hedged enclosure."

Variations in the spelling of Greehaw are Greenhalgh, Greenhaugh, Greenhough, Greenhowe, Greenhow, Greenhaw.
