Ordered by the Court that the following named persons be appointed Commissioners for the Town of Ripley in said County of Lauderdale to sell the lots in the same, to let out the public buildings and superintend the same, to wit, Griffith L. Rutherford, Rezin L. Byron, Hiram G. Keller, Henry R. Crawford and Robert C. Campbell.

Ordered that John Byron be appointed Overseer of the Dyersburg road from Hurricane Hill to Cane Creek bridge and that he have the following hands to work under him, To Wit, six or half of the hands belonging to Mrs. Anthony, John Stone and hands, Robert West, Joseph Taylor, John Rudder, Ruddger B. Giffy, Lawson Murry, W. H. Stone, W. H. McCarrol, William Laird, John Land, David Reynolds, David Lofton, S. Malone, J. Peterson, J. Reaves, W. Reaves, Roger L. Byron hands and James Morman and hands.

Ordered by the Court the following good and lawful men be appointed a jury of men to straighten the road leading from Buck's Ferry to Stokes Landing, To Wit, Isaac D. Maxwell, Samuel Lusk, Eluathan H. Condry, William R. Ledbetter, Alfred Byler and Dickinson Jennings.

This day Rezin L. Byron, Robert C. Campbell, Henry R. Crawford and Hiram C. Keller, the Commissioner for the town of Ripley, came into Court and entered to bonds and took oath accordingly.

The court then proceeded to elect a County Surveyor for Lauderdale County and upon counting the votes, Able H. Pope received the highest number of votes, whereupon he came into court with John C. Bain, Rezin L. Byron, Samuel V. Gilliland, Thomas D. Fisher and Hiram C. Keller, his securities and entered into bond conditioned and payable as the law directs and took the oaths of office.

The Court proceeded to appoint commissioners to let out and superintend the building of a temporary court house in the town of Ripley, whereupon the following gentlemen were appointed (to wit) Milton Turner, Rezin L. Byron, Hiram C. Keller, Jacob Jones and Henry R. Crawford.

Ordered by the Court that the following good and lawful men be appointed a jury of view to lay off and mark out the nearest and best route for a road leading from Ripley to the Haywood county line in a direction to Brownsville and that they report to the next term of this court (to wit) Rezin L. Byron, Isaac D. Maxwell, Richard Reaves, James A. Morris, Robert Walker, Claton Harris and John F. Burke, a majority can act.

This day the jury of view appointed at the last time of this court to view mark and lay off the nearest and best way for a road leading from Ripley to the County line in a direction of Brownsville, present here in court a report the result of said view which report is in the following words.........Given under our hands the date above written, Rezin L. Ordered by the court a majority being present that Joseph Taylor be appointed Overseer to cut out the road from Ripley to the county line in a direction to Brownsville as far as the west part of John stone's farm and that he have all the hands that work under John Byron to cut out the same and put it in repair as a second class road.

This day Rezin L. Byron one of town commissioners for the town of Ripley returned to court a plan of said town which is received by the court and ordered to be filed in the Clerk's office.

Ordered by the court that the following good and lawful men be appointed Jurors of review to lay off and mark out the nearest and best way for a road from Ripley in a direction to Fulton and that they report to the next term of this court (to wit) Rezin L. Byron, Hiram C. Keller, James Whitson, James Sherman, A. B. Gaines, Levi Gardner and Lewis Mathews.

 

Ordered by the court that the following good and lawful men be appointed Jurors of view to lay off and mark out the nearest and best way for a road from Ripley to Fullen's Ferry towards Covington and they report to the next term of this court (to wit) Rezin L. Byron, Thomas Fitzpatrick, David c. Russell, Emri Keller, Joseph Wardlow, Milton Turner and John Fullen.

Ordered by the court that John Stone, Rezin L. Byron and Robert P. Russell be appointed commissioners to lay off to the widow of Stephen J. Blackwell dec'd a years provisions and that they report to the next term of this court.

Ordered by the court that Rezin L. Byron, Hiram C. Keller and James Whitson be appointed commissioners for the year 1836 to settle with the officers of Lauderdale County.

 

This day Levina Linnville came into court and pray the court that Pleasant G. Davenport be appointed her guardian which granted he having entered into bond conditioned and payable as the law directs.

Ordered that Rezin L. Byron, Dabney P. Phillips and James J. Crawford be appointed commissioners of the internal improvement fund for the County of Lauderdale and they ask for, demand and received from the county of Dyer and Tipton that part of said fund that belongs to Lauderdale County.

Ordered by the court there being a majority of all the Justices in said county being present and voting in the affirmation that Rezin L. Byron, William Turner, Abel H. Pope, Henry Rutherford, and R. C. Campbell be appointed commissioners to reorganize the civil districts in said county and report to the July term of the court.

It is ordered that the following good and lawful men of the body of the county of Lauderdale be summoned as jurors for the next term of the circuit court for Lauderdale county.......William Turner, Sampson Smith, John S. Ordered that Nathaniel W. Barnes be appointed Overseer of the road from Joseph Curries to Silvertooth ferry on Hatchie and that he have the following hands (to wit) James Wardlow, William H. Fisher, Nancy Fisher's hands, Alex Wardlow, A. J. Fullen, John Fullen, Judge B. Mosley, Isaac Fullen, Henry T. Chism, P. G. Gaines, and hands, James Watson, P. G. Davenport, Martin Norman, Z. Norman, Richard Golden, William Flinn, John Albison and son, George S. Johnson and hands, Jacob Linville and Jonathan Osment and that he keep the same in repair as a first class road.

It is ordered that Rezin L. Byron, David P. Posey and John Stone be appointed commissioners to divide the estate of Samuel Ruddger, dec'd and lay off and divide said estates between John W. Rudder and Elizabeth Rudder and report to the next term of the court.

Russell, John Vassor, Henry Willard, John Fletcher, James H. Hogsette, Eli Coble, Benjamin Nearn, James Long, Elnathan H. Condray, Henry Crihfield, Jr., John W. Nearn, Samuel Strickland, James A. Freeman and Henry Pitts, Sr., and Samuel Thompson and Robert H. Hamil, Constables to wait on the court and jury.

 

This day the court proceeded to appoint five Trustees of the Ripley Academy according to the Statute in such case made and provided whereupon the following men were appointed that is to say James L. Green, Stith Richardson, Griffith L. Rutherford, Rezin L. Byrn and Isaac M. Steele.

It appearing to the satisfaction of the court that Mary Graves, alias Mary Young has died leaving no will and Lance Graves having applied for letters of administration and the court being satisfied with his claim to the administration and he and his securities, Rezin L. Byrn and Absolam G. W. Byrn having entered into bond and conditioned and payable as the law directs and he having took the oath of administration according to law.  It is therefore ordered that he have letters of administration accordingly.

This day G. L. Rutherford, sheriff and collector of the public taxes for Lauderdale County presented in open court upon oath the following statement of removals from the county off of whom he could not collect the tax (to wit)

Ordered by the court there being a majority of all the Justices of said county present and voting in the affirmative that Jessie Ledbetter be paid eighty four dollars by the Trustee out of any monies in his hands not otherwise appropriated for building a bridge across Cane Creek on the road from Ripley to Isaac Moore.

 

This day Jessie Ledbetter came into court and entered into bond with William R. Ledbetter, Drewry Masey and Calvin F. Ledbetter, his securities in the penal cum of one hundred and sixty dollars conditioned for the keeping in good repair a bridge built by him across Cane Creek on the road from Ripley to Isaac Moore for the space of five years from the fifth day of October 1841, which was acknowledged in open court and ordered to be received and recorded.

It is ordered by the court that Rezin L. Byrn, Esq., Revenue Commissioner be paid two dollars and fifty cents by the County Trustee out of any money in County Treasury not otherwise appropriated for settling with John M. C. Robertson, County Trustee for the year 1840.  Ayes, on said appropriation were Elnathan H. Condray, Elijah Lake, Abel H. Pope, Samuel V. Gilliland and Henry Williard Esqs.

Whereas the clerk has reported to this court that H. A. G. Lee one of the securities of William D. Lee, Guardian of Malvina A. Marley and Josiah C. Marley orphan and minor heirs of Adam Marley and Susan C. Marley has died.  It is therefore ordered by the court issue a notice directed to the sheriff of this County commanding him to notify the said William D. Lee ten days before the next term of this court to be and appear in this court on the first Monday in February next then and there to give new and counter security in place of the said H. A. G. Lee, deceased or deliver up the said estate.

Ordered that Rezin L. Byrn, Treasurer of the Commissioners of the Town of Ripley be allowed to return as compensation for his services Three per centum on all monies received and three per centum on all monies paid out the, ayes, for said Allowance were Alexander, Childress, Condray, green, Ledbetter, Maxwell, Pope, Peyton, and Rice, Noes, none.

 

July 4, 1842

Ordered that James W. Reynolds be appointed overseer of the road from Ripley towards Dyersburg in place of William Lunsford and that he have the following hands to work under him - (To Wit) - Guilford Jones and hands, William Inman, Damon Thomas Millsapp, George Millsapp, John H. Maxwell and hands, John J. Nelson and hands, William Lunsford and hands, Alfred Denny, Nicholas Reynolds, Walter Caruth, William Caruth and Armstead B. Nealy and that he work from Ripley to the North Bank of Caruth's Creek and that he keep the same in repair as a first class road.

Ordered by the court that Rezin L. Byrn, Elijah Lake and John H. Maxwell be appointed Commissioner to procure a site and have the necessary buildings erected for a poor house for Lauderdale County to be completed by the next January term of this court and that they report to the next term of this court.
