The account below of the Descendants of Hugh McCullough is pieced together from family papers, research books & information gathered from distant "cousins". I welcome all additions and corrections (contact:  [email protected]), particularly on the earlier history in Maryland and Europe. There are also some McCullough photos in the Mysteries section, most taken between 1850 and 1895. Let me know if you recognize anyone! I also have many identified photos (not yet on the site) of Sheridan & Mary Ross McCullough's children and grandchildren.

According to an article about the descendants of Sheridan McCullough, published in the Clarion Democrat, (Clarion, Pennsylvania, vol. LXXII, No. 12, November 2, 1911), the first of our McCullough family in America was Hugh McCullough, who arrived around 1748. Other than the mention of Hugh in this article, I have never found any other references to a Hugh McCullough that could directly link to our family.

Hugh supposedly settled near Baltimore, Maryland and it is there in Harford County that the first documented reference to William McCullough (b. abt. 1768) is found: his marriage to Rachel Sheridine in MD in 1796. Their son, Sheridan, was born in Baltimore in 1801, and some time before 1820, the family moved to Centre Co., PA. In 1825, Sheridan married Mary Ross, the daughter of Jonathan Ross and Mary McCalmont. Their son William was born March 1, 1828, and sometime between 1827 and 1830, the family moved to Jefferson Co., PA

William McCullough married Elizabeth Jane Frampton December 28,1842. William and Elizabeth Jane were the parents of William Sheridan McCullough, born January 28,1863.  More information on the McCullough, Frampton, Ross and Sheridine families can be found by clicking the links at the left.

(note: this info on James is highly likely, but not proven beyond a doubt.  1820 census records for William in Walker Twp. show 2 male children, one slightly older than Sheridan. After Sheridan's marriage, a James McCullough appears in the 1830 census records as the only McCullough in Walker with the child listed below and an older man of William's age. After that, he disappears, and we know that William moved to Corsica in that period, where he died.)
