The Broom Family

The earliest Broom in our line for whom we have a record in America was Thomas Broom, father of James, who married Esther Willis and grandfather of Jacob Broom, delegate to the Constitutional Convention from Delaware. The first record found so far for Thomas is of Thomas' marriage to Elizabeth Hannum in 1711 at St. Paul's Church, Chester Co., PA. Thomas is also listed as a taxpayer in 1715 in both Darby and Concord, PA. He then appears in Wilmington in 1729 and 1730, in records of the Old Swedes Church. His will is dated 1749 The following is pieced together from various records, and gives a fairly good picture of those descendants of Thomas who were most closely related to my own ancestors.

Special thanks to Nancy List and her late father, Ralph William List (1919-2001)-- and all the "cousins" who contributed to his research -- for the Wills of Jacob Broom, Rachel Pierce & James Broom, and for verifying much of my own research. Also to Patrick Hannum who helped confirm Elizabeth Hannum as Thomas Broom's wife & came up with many good suggestions

Generation No. 2

2.  JAMES3 BROOM (THOMAS2, (UNKNOWN)1) was born Bet. 1711 - 1730 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA, and died 15 July 1791 in Wilmington, DE.  He married ESTHER WILLIS 3 September 1750 in Wilmington, Del, daughter of JOHN WILLIS and MARY WEBB.  She was born Bef. 1732 in Thornbury, Chester Co., PA, and died Bef. 1791 in Wilmington, DE. Occupation: Gentleman & Landowner

8.               ii.    ABRAHAM BROOM, b. Abt. 1755, Wilmington, DE; d. Aft. 1791, Washington, DC.

iii.    ISAAC BROOM, b. Bet. 1751 - 1756, Wilmington, DE; d. Aft. 1790, Berks Co., PA.

Notes for ISAAC BROOM: The relationship of Isaac is speculation based in part on the will of Jacob Taylor in 1759 in which James and Esther appear as "friends", as well as Jacob, Abraham & Isaac and James' brother in law, David Bush. In 1790, there is an Isaac in the Berks Co. census, who disappears after that time, although younger Isaac Brooms show up later in PA between 1820-1850. There is also an LDS record listing an Isaac and an Esther as children of James Broom and Esther Willis, but not Jacob and Abraham.

We know that by Jacob's death in 1810, the only brother still living was Abraham. Campbell's description of Jacob's will suggests that there were nieces and nephews other than those of Abraham.

                 iv.    ESTHER BROOM, b. Bet. 1751 - 1756, Wilmington, DE; d. Bef. 1759, probably.

Notes for ESTHER BROOM: This is speculation, based on an LDS record and the fact that this child is not mentioned in the Taylor will of 1759. However, it is possible that a female child would not have been mentioned, so if she existed, she quite possibly could have married and had children.
