In 1700, as a result of the friction between the proprietary government and the freeholders, Richard Co mpton 3. et al sent a petition to the King (1701) asking for the removal of the proprietors and creating a Royal Colony for New Jersey (New
Jersey Archives).

The same year, 1700, Richard Compton III and Providence Isseltyne Compton w ere witnesses of the Will of Thomas Whitlock (along with John Bowne and John Bo wne, cordwainer).

Very confusingly, there were two contemporaneous William Comptons in NJ during the settlement era: William Compton of Middlesex County and William Compton of Monmouth County. It is highly likely that they were related; some have gone so far as
to say they were the same man, but I don't believe that is correct. Wil liam Compton of Middlesex may well be the William Compton who bought land of Da niel Ladd in 1662 in Ipswich, Mass., then married Mary Wilmot before moving to Middlesex
County, NJ. He could be the son of John Compton of Roxbury of Mass. Parents: William I COMPTON.
