A s this list seems very quiet at the moment, I thought I would inject some human
interest from the following. A few of us will have this lady as an ancestor.

[Robertson. Materials for the history of Thomas Becket, 7 vols, Rolls Series , London 1875-85, II p255-7; in Latin.]
A second miracle performed on James de Clare, son of Roger Earl of Hertford and
Matilda of St Hilary. Some weeks aft er his recovery, namely in the middle of the following Lent, James was seizedby another sickness and breathed his last. His mother had set out to church toatte nd divine service; members of the household had remained at home. There was noo ne found to announce the the death of the boy to the mother, lest he should be said to have been the cause of the calamity. At length a little boy, the brothe r of the dead infant, ran to the church (it is known for a fact that no boy kee ps a secret) and exclaimed over and over again to his mother, "Madam, my brothe r is dead. Madam, my brother is dead."

At once she turned pale and jumpedup, and throwing off her cloak ran back to the
house. She found the infanttakenout of the chamber into the large outer hall, with
his mouth open, but inwardly wi thout breath, the tongue and lips retracted, the eyes
sunk and withonlythe whi te of the eye to be seen, cold and stiff, and so to speak
briefly, well and tr uly dead. She seized him in her arms and said "St. Thomas, restore my sonto me . When he had a hernia previously you restored him to health. Nowhe isdead rest ore him to life, holy martyr.' Moreover she ran and took the relics of the sain t which she had brought from Canterbury out of a chest. She putthe blood of the saint on the mouth of the dead infant and thrust a piece of the cloth into hist hroat, continuously crying and saying "Holy martyr, Thomas, give mebackmy son. He will be brought to your tomb if he revives. I will visit you on bare feet.He ar me" But all the knights who stood by, and also the Countess of Warwick and t he rest of the women, told her to be quiet. Yet she kneltwith bare knees again and again on the ground, and cried much more, "Holy martyr, havemercyon me"

Then her chaplain Lambert, a respected man of good age, spoke:"How are youbehav ing, my lady? You are acting foolishly. You are being stupid. What you are doin g and saying smacks of madness. Surely the Creator should beallowedto do what h e wishes with his creature. Stop! Put down the infant, andlet him be treatedas dead. It is the height of stupidity for you to strive for what isimpossibleto o btain" Everyone spoke similarly. However, she said, "Iwill certainly not stop, nor will I put down the infant, for I trust that he will be given back tome. Ma rtyr, glorious martyr,
most pious , belovedmartyr, have mercyon me; give me ba ck my son'

After she had cried in this way for about two hours, themartyr ha d mercy and
restored her infant to life.First there was a sign of red on his f ace, and after a
while he cried and opened his eyes.

They blessedtheLord wh o gives death and life, and goes down to the depths and back. There was great joy in the house, and rejoicing replaced the extremes of grief: "for they obtai ned joy and gladness; sadness and groans fled away'. The countess, mother of th e restored boy, took on unaccustomed toil, and setting outto Canterburyon bare feet with the boy performed her promised pilgrimage. There followed the Countes s of Warwick and many other women, and also the chaplaincalled Lambert, and man y knights who all testified that they had seen the boy both truly deadand truly restored to life.

Cheers,
Rosie

From same, p 92: "On Ju ly 15, 1262, the day after the king sailed to

movement since the settlement of 1261; he had been in ill health for some
months before his death, and rumors circulate d that he had been poisoned.
[Footnote by Altschul: "E.g., Dunstable, p. 219' *Annales Cambriae*, pp. 99-100, where "Gilbert" is wrongly given for "Richard. Michael Altschul, *A Baronial Family in Medieval England: T he Clares,
1217-1314*, Baltimore MD (Johns Hopkins Press) 1965. p 62-63:
"Neg otiations for the second marriage [of Richard] began even before Megotta de Bur gh's death in November, 1237.

As early as 1236, before the original match wa s publicly revealed, King Henry had entertained notions of marrying the heir to one of his French relatives. The plan apparently fell through, perhaps when n ews of the first marriage came out.
In the fall of 1237, while Meggotta was st ill alive, John de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, offered 5,000 marks, a sum roughly eq uivalent to the gross annual value of the Clare inheritance, to have Richard's marriage for his own daughter Maud. The earl was undoubtedly moved by many of the same considerations that had prompted the wife of Hubert de Burgh, although he had no need to resort to the drastic actions she had taken in 1232. He was the highest, and perhaps the only, bidder, but Henry still desired to marry Ri chard to a foreign kinsman. Through the efforts of his brother Richard of Corn wall, the stepfather of the young heir, a compromise was effected. On October 26, 1237, Henry offered the marriage to Hugh de Lusignan, count of La Marche, f or one of his daughters, with the proviso that if the count did not agree to th e proposal by the following January, the earl of Lincoln could have it for 3,00 0 marks. Hugh de Lusignan did not agree, and on January 25, 1238, Richard de C lare was married to Maud de Lacy. (P) By the time of his second marriage, Ric hard was almost sixteen. He was to remain a ward of the king until 1243, when he came of age and was formally granted seisin of his inheritance. His fortune s shed a grim light on the political and financial manipulations of the rights of wardship and marriage, and on the impact of those rights on national politic s. His own attitudes and personal feelings never emerge during this entire peri od. As Powicke has remarked, "one would like to know how Richard de Clare felt about it all."

Roger de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford, is likewise said to have born the title o f Earl of Clare. In the 3rd Henry II, this nobleman obtaining from the king all the lands in Wales which he could win, marched into Cardigan with a great army and fortified divers castles thereabouts. In the 9th of the same reign, we fin d him summoned by the celebrated Thomas-à-Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, to Westminster, in order to do homage to the prelate for his castle of Tonebruge; which at the command of the king he refused, alleging that holding it by milita ry service it belonged rather to the crown than to the church. His lordship m. Maude (who m. after his decease William d'Aubigny, Earl of Arundel), dau. of Ja mes de St. Hillary, by whom he had a son, Richard, his successor. This earl who , from his munificence to the church and his numerous acts of piety, was called the Good, d. in 1173, and was s. by his son, Richard de Clare, 4th Earl of Her tford.
