ELKS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Howard F. "Doc" Duffy was born in Tacoma, Washington, April 29, 1908. His fther had moved out to the Coast from Wisconsin in 1897 and joined the gold rush to the Yukon. After returning from the frozen North, fed up with the hunt for gold, he settled with his family in Tacoma. Young Howard, during his school days iin the City of Destiny, spent a great many of his afternoons down on the docks watching the giant greighters slip out of Commencement Bay on their way to Europe and the orient. In 1916 the value of Tacoma's ocean commerce was set at $75,000,000.

After working several years in a loan office the urge to visit foreign lands across the sea and get paid for it was too much for the young man. Aftr making his first trip to Alaska over 20 years ago he has cruised to practically every country in the world, dropping into such colorful ports at Marsilles, Liverpool, Dublin, Cork, Honolulu and Tokyo. During W. W. II he made many voyages with the merchant marine to the South Pacific at a time when the Japanese subs were very active.
After a long cruise he usually spends a few pleasant days at the Vaccarino Hacienda where his rich baritone voice is mellowed by the Malaga atmosphere. In the early days in Tacoma he used to sing with Bing Crosy and if Duffy had had time to practice he might be up in the big time right now.
Bro. Duffy joined the ills during Clarence Simmonds' administration. He has done very little committee work because he is away most of the time. He attends lodge faihfully while in port and on very rare occasions has been known to take a little Black and White for his nerves. If there are no chess players around he would indulge in a little 4-5-6.
In the old days in Tacoma, Doc built up quite a reputaion as a fisherman, bringingin bass from Lake Kapowsin and trout from the puyallup River. Whenever he feels a little jumpy he takes off for a bit of skiing at Mt. Rainier. This eligible bachelor has a little black book that is a veritable Fort Knox of feminine pulchritude. Who knows some day some rich widow may lure him into wedded bliss.
When "Doc" Duffy retires from the sea lanes, leaves all those Restless years behind him, it is my guess he'll settle down on sunny old Puget Sound - there to dream of pagodas, of geisha girls, of sampans sailing down lazy rivers and the peeping lights of far off cities.
And here's a 12-gun salute and a couple of shots for "Deep Sea" Duffy, my candidte for Shipmate of the Year - Happy harbors to a great guy. Parents: Mathew Emmett DUFFY and Della Floyd BOYD.
