In the Westmoreland County, PA court house there is a record of the grandchildren of Peter Eichar, from his son Joseph, applying for the portion of the estate due Joseph. This is filed April 4, 1839 and it refers to Peter's will dated September, 1814. In this will it indicates that Peter divided his estate equally amoung his eight children, he does however indicate that John is deceased. The application is filed by Joseph S. Lake who is married to Eleanor Eichar, granddaughter of Peter.
May 5, 1994 Western Reserve Historical Society --Henry R. Baldwin Genealogical records- in vol. 16- page 111 there is several mentions of Eleanor Eichar Lake. This section of the Baldwin report was prepared in Brookfield Township, Trumbell County, Ohio but does not state the year prepared or the purpose?? There are several columns and I will try to duplicate his materials. I will use spaces with a line to indiacte where he has paired or combined families. He has placed a number after tha Lake names and I am unsure of it's meaning. It is not completely clear as to which remark belongs to which family.

On 2/24/94 I visited the WRHS and examined the book, 'Pennsylvania in 1800'. The only name close to Eicher-ar was:
Eichar, Jacob in Moghentongo Township - Northumberland County - pg 182:03. I checked Eiker.
In searching for ancestor I went to WRHS and used the 'Index to 1810 Census of Pennsylvania' by Ohio Family Historians. There are only two names listed:

Eicher, Daniel Fayette County Salt Lick Township page 1018
On 2/24/94 I visited the WRHS and examined the book, 'Pennsylvania 1820 Census Index' by R.V. Jackson. The ONLY Eicher name listed is Micheal.

In the Wooster, Ohio library the book on Wayne County burierals includes a Jacob Eicher d. 1864 and a Joseph Eicher d. April 17 1872 ae. 61 yr. They are buried in the Oak Grove mennonite Cemetery, Green Township, Wayne County, Ohio. This is east of Smithville.

In the Westmoreland County, PA court house there is a Orphans Court petition by Rachel Eicher, widow of Jacob Eichar partitions for guardianship for her children. She lists her children as Henry, Nancy, Mary and Peter, only Henry is over age 14. She asks that a Willam McKinney be appointed guardiand for Nancy and Mathew Jack for Mary and Peter. In a sepearte filling Henry asks for Wm. McKinney to be his guardian.

There was a report (?) that a John Eichar had operated a gun factory in St. Augustine, Florida during the Civil War. I wrote the the St. Augustine Historical Society and they were unable to confirm or deny the story as there was no newspaper in the town during the period.

The book "The Horn Papers" Vol. III lists early land purchases in the Pennsylvania Counties of Fayette, Greene and Washington. There is a record of Joseph Eichar on Page 17 (Northern half of Springfield Township, Fayette County. The land is on Indian Creek where it takes a major turn north- I made a little map sketch in my notebook see Dec. 13, 1994

At this time Nancy signs the paperwork with her mark. The description has Peter and Nancy as being from Hempfield Township and Joseph as being from Fairfield Township. At this time Joseph would have been about four years married and about 30 years old. There is no mention of Josephs older brother Peter?????

On this date the Treaty of Fort Industry is signed with the Indians and this opens up the area that is now (1995) Stark, Wayne Richland and Ashland Counties. Three months earlier Bezaleel Wells starts buying Stark County land for $2.00 per acre. In September Wells makes a layout for the city of Canton. On January 27, 1806 the State authorizes a road to be built from New Lisbon to Massillon and this goes thru Canton. On January 1, 1809 Canton is named the county seat of the new newly organized Stark County.

Joseph Eichar, of Stark County Ohio purchases land from Bazaleel Wells in Jefferson County. $35.00 for a lot #90 in Canton, Oh. We the lots in Canton were put on sales Joseph purchased the ninth one(see property book 'B' page 43). The recording is in Columbiana County. This lot is only two blocks from the county court house in 1970. This lot is on the north side of the main east west street through Canton. The center of town is the crossing of this street (tuscarawas) and Market on the north south axis. Going east from Market there is a N-S street without a name, then Walnut Street the another N-S street and Joseph owned the NE corner lot. Only 20 lots were sold in Canton in this year and there are but 27 inhabitants. In this same year a German Reformed Church is started in the town. This information is from the book, "Bezaleel Wells Founder of Canton & Steubenville, Ohio". by E.Heald -printed in 1942.
A booklet at the Steubenville, Ohio Mall Library has a list of "Early Residents of Jefferson County, Ohio", 1806 -1809 mentions Joseph Eichar of Stark County, July 25, 1809.
In the book "Ohio Lands Steubenville Land Office 1800 - 1820" by Carol W. Bell is at the Hudson, Ohio library. This a claims Joseph bought the lot on this date in R-8 T-10 S15, and his residence is given as Starke County.

In the Stark County, Ohio property book B - page 325 there is a deed recorded to Joseph Eichar as a patent to purchase 160 acres of government land. It is described as the S.E. quarter of section 15; township 10; Range 8. In 1970 this property is in the south east side of Canton with Millerton Street on the south and Warner Street on the west.

There is good story about Joseph Eichar and some other Wooster citizens digging a salt well at about this time. (I cannot locate the printed version at this time -ah). Salt was hard to come by in the Wooster area but there was a damp spot down near the Killbuck Creek that had briney water the animals would lick. The idea Joseph has was to dig down to the salt water and pump it up where it could be evaporated and the salt collected. The story says they got to 400 feet and hit this black gooey stuff that blew out of the hole and the project was abandoned. No one knew what to do with petroleum in 1815. If they had the Eichar heirs might be richer than the Rockafellers. This story appeared in the Wooster newspaper abut 1965.
In the 1970's the Graham family is living on this farm and the owner recalls that as a youth they would drop a bucket on a line into this well to pull up grease for axels.

Joseph was named a trustee of the city of Wooster. In the 1812-1864 deed index at the Wooster Library (1993) he is listed as one of the first purchasers of land in Wayne County. The year is 1821.

In April 1823 the estates of Joesph Eichar and one George Bair was sued for $240 due on land in NW 1/4 -S13;R 14; T20. Administrators were Mary Ann Bair, David Bair, Wm. McFall and Samuel Knapp.
Page 274 of the "Commemorative Biographical Record of the counties of Wayne & Holmes, Ohio", published by J.H. Beers & Co. 1889, says that Jacob Eichar was the grandfather of Joseph Jr. and that in 1812 he was captured by indians and escaped by running the gauntlet.

About 1870 Elizabeth Eichar Lake wrote a family history of seven generations that she had known. The following is her report on her father. The spelling and punctuation is hers.
My Father
Joseph Eichar, was the second son of Peter and Nancy Eichar, I have often heard my Grand Parents speak of their son Joseph as if they thought as much of him as the Patriarch Jacob did of his son Joseph. He was a dear good Father, - and I have always understood that he was endow'd with great energy of character and persevering industry.
I am not so much at a loss, what to say of him as what as what to leave unsaid --- I will begin with the time when he commenced life for himself - Joseph Eichar was married to Miss Ann Suman at Greensburg, PA October 10, 1800 his father gave him a house with a flouring Mill and saw Mill situated on the Tub-Mill river in Ligonier valley about twenty miles from Greensburg also a small store in the dry - goods trade, all free from incumbrance; I have often heard my dear Father and Mother speak of how happy they were in their new Home, they were almost ready to conclude that it was an earthly Paradise. Then we had frequent little Jubilee's when Grandfather, Grandmother, Aunts, Uncles, or Cousins, came to see us -- Father had a Miller by the name of McMinn; his wifes name was Prudy, he always call'd her Prudy --both Mr. and Mrs. McMinn could tell the most wonderful stories about the Revolutionary war, and adventures among the Indians -- in after years of long ago, when I have read Walter Scot, or Cooper I have been greatly interested in the grand stories they told! but after all they did not entrance my mind like McMinn's and Purdy's did in my happy childhood. - After all this joyous time of about nine years; there began to be a great stir in regard to the far West! - Paradise is always a little ahead of the emigrant! - Father went to see for himself, he returned delighted - he said the half had not been told! he could see great fortunes were to made there, this was at the time when it seem'd as if all the world was going to Ohio - Father had fixed upon a tract of Land near Canton Stark Co. Ohio - sold out his mill, saw mill and store; gathered all that he had together, with Mother and Children. - I remember well much of the sad parting with Grandfather, Grandmother, Uncles, Aunts, and Cousins. - I think the tears I shed then were the first bitter tears of my life.- I respect the memory of them and the feelings that prompted them now when I am old. - We reach'd our destination in health and safety. Well do I remember the log Cabin! it seems to stand before me now. - Here some of the happiest day's of my Childhood pass'd away - My first school days began here. - the school was near our house and was a log Cabin; the Teacher was an English - man of some education; and best of all a good Christian man, (as we all said then) of the Baptist persuation - I remember upon one occasion he told us to tell our parents when we got home that the Rev. T G Jones Baptist minister of Wooster would preach in Canton tomorrow! this was the first time that I had ever heard of a Baptist minister! - we had liv'd here about three years - when we had a prospect of a new house. Father began to make a arrangements to build a large Stone House just like Grandfathers!
This the beginning Ambitious desires. Here I first began to build "Air Castles". - Father had the stone quarries and the Lime - Kilns on his Own land, and had but fairly begun to build, - when the war of 1812 with England was delcared! The house building was defer'd. In the mean time Father was drafted to join a regiment ordr'd to the defense of the North Western Teritory. This event overwhelmed our household in Sorrow! Father had patroitism enough to sustain him - but alas! for Mother Children this was our first great grief. - but not of long duration as Father succeded in hiring a substitute. - O, how rejoic'd we all were. - I remember Hulls surrender at Detroit as distictly as if it had been only a short time ago, the consternation, astonishment, and surprise! "Came like a clap of thunder in a clear sky." - But most of all greatfully do I remember Grandfather came to see us about this time, O, what a jubilee! Words could not tell how glad we all were . Grandfather too was very happy to find us all well! no one kill'd by the Indians! - the nice farm and everything looking well. He tendered his congratulations to father and Mother in both German and English languages. - his visit of three or four weeks seem'd to us children more like only three or four days! We all enjoy'd his visit very much with sad hearts the Farewels were given - on the part of us children it was with sorrow grief and tears all fearing that we should see him no more, it was the last time he came to Ohio.
The next stiring event in our family, arrival at Canton of a man by the name of Kitsmiller, on the look out for a large Farm, he had been some time looking round about Canton, and finally fix'd upon my Fathers as the very place he wanted - - The Price was agreed upon and Father sold to him this nice Farm. O my! How sorry we children were! - sorry to leave our school and the good teacher, Mr. Hall, - there was a very remarkable spring near the house, it burst out of the gentle slope like a little river, some ment thought it almost strong enough to turn a Mill, among our first cherished recollections was the Mill and the Saw Mill, we had our little mills and water wheels along down the falls of this spring. the thought of leaving them troubled us very much. But Father consol'd us by saying that this time, we moved, we should live in Town.
The next thing Father went to look for a new Home we went westward. Paradise was still ahead! he was well pleased with his trip and bought a house and lot in the Town of Wooster Ohio. - the house was built of squared logs - and was the best in town excepting Mr. Wm Nailor (Mrs. Judge Dean's father) - In the Month of April we moved, and took up our residence there.
The Rev. T.G. Jones was living there, then our hearts warm'd to him, and his family right away; and Wooster seem'd like Home. he came there in the year 1811. and in 1812 the First Church was Constituted this was the first Baptist Church in Northern Ohio. Mr. Jones was the Pastor of this church 27 years. He was one of the excellent of the earth. During the spring of this year the Rev. T.G. Jones and my Father united their efforts to raise a school by gathering both Boys and Girls, they succeded in getting enough to make up a small school, which was to commence in the Block House! on the site where the Wooster Female Seminary now stands - about this time there was a young lawyer came to Wooster to open a Law Office there but La! there was no Law business to do in that honest Town at that early day this young man whose name was Carlos Mather, was from New Haven Conn. and was educated at Yale College. - He was engaged as Teacher, and I believe he did his duty well. The first day the School was open, the first children at their Post were Enoch Jones and his sister Lucretia, Eleanor and Nancy Eichar. - So far as we know I am the only one living of al that School.
The Town of Wooster was laid out in the year 1805 by Joseph H. Larwill, Wm Henry and John Weaver. There were two places contending for the county seat, the other was on what was then call'd Madison Hill. Beazaleel Wells He located the Town of Madison on that beautiful and elevated site _ But the Commissioners appointed to locate the seat of Justice, decided in favour of Wooster in the year 1811. _ At this time there were no white inhabitants between this, and Lake Erie - afterm we had been living inWooster nearly three years My Fathar and I went up to Cleveland on horseback going on the Old Indian Trail. then there were only two openings on the Trail _ one was at Elliott's Town the other at what is now Medina.
After the decission that the Seat of Justice should be at Wooster the Madison Tract was for sale. My Father bought it, _ the next years after; the heads of three families by the name of Rice, came fro Pa. they wanted a large a large tract of Land so as to make three farms joining each other; the Madison tract just suited them they offered Father a large price for it: about doubling the price he had paid for it' _ He could not withstand the tempting offer! and sold it to them. _ This made him rich _ He invested his money in valuable Land's one tract adjoining the Town of Wooster on the North side, of a part of which the Presybertian University now stands, also a half section of what was call'd Cedar valley, a half section with a mill site onit, on Little Killbuck _ the tract with the famous "Salt Spring" on it two and a half miles West of Wooster and several other half and quarter sections enter'd at the government Land Office, also three or four Lot's in Town. This real estate was bought and mostly paid for - all of it rose rapidly in value - and business Men said Joseph Eicher was a rich man.
Now I will only make a few brief statements and close. -- During the year 1815 Father made a beginning to Bore for salt the the famous Salt Spring above mentioned _ The well was sunk four hundred and sixty five feet deep! - Salt water of a strong qualtiy was obtain'd, but no one could be found able to construct a pump that would raise the water in a suffi;cient quantity to make it profitable. But a great obstacle was the striking a strong vein of oil ' scientific men pronounced it to be "A Wonderful Phenomenon" But we now believe it was only Petroleum.
In the course of three or four years thousands of dollars were sunk here -- In the meantime Father engaged in the Produce Trade from Pittsburg down the Ohio and Missisppippi Rivers -- This also proved disastrous.
Then again Father turned his eyes westward, (Paradise was not look'd for on earth) -- Sandusky loom'd up as the very place where all his losses could be retrieved. He had been there and believed it to be a magnifficent opportunity! he bought a House and Lot there -- and on the 17th day of September we took up our residence there, with strong hopes of enjoying all the happiness and prosperity this world could afford.
How true, "we Know not what a day will bring forth." We had hardly got settled in our new Home when Father complained of feeling unwell. It soon became appearant that he was suffering from Typhoid Fever; the best Medical skill was unavailing and on the 17th day of October 1821 just one month from the day we had arrived there, he closed his eyes in that sleep that knows no waking!! in the 47th year of his age.
This was a crushing berevement! he was a kind and affectionate Husband, a good Father, and a generous Friend He left the wife of his youth and middle age, and nine children to mourn his loss in this strange Land.
Nothing but the rich consolations of the Gospel could have sustained Mother. -- The names of the children were Eleanor, Nancy, Peter, Elizabeth, Ann, Rseann, Joseph, David and Lycurgus. -- My Mother from my earliest recollection was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church -- she was a woman of great energy of character -- In the spring of 1822 her eldest daughter Eleanor was married on the 18th day of April to Joseph L. Lake of Wooster Ohio and went there to live -- in about a month we heard that the county seat was removed from the place where father had bought across the Sandusky River -- Mr. Lake went right off to Sandusky to see Mother, and made arrangements forher to return to Wooster, and settle on the Farm Known as the Salt Works -- where she liv'd the remaining years of her life. -- and where she bro;ught up this large family to strict habits of Industry and underthe influence of Religious Principle.
Mother died on the 9th of September 1862 in the 83rd year of her age. -- She died in Hope -- when we can say that what need we say more.
My Father Joseph Eichar was the third Representative of the six generations already alluded to.

May 5, 1994 Western Reserve Historical Society --Henry R. Baldwin Genealogical records- Vol. 24; Page 35. it is not completely clear what area he is writing about but it appears to be Springfield Township in PA. He mentions that the township is bordered on the east by Somerset County. He refers to information he found on page 745??? -- In todays (1994) map Springfield Township is in the N.E. corner of Fayette County and is bordered on the north by Westmoreland County, and on the east by Somerset County.
"William Kern served in the Revolution and after the war, married Catherine Hoover. He died 1837 ae 91 years. His sons were Solomon, Abraham, William and Jacob, Jonathan, & Joshua and daughters who daughters who married Joseph Eicher and George Nicholson. Abraham the second son of Wm, removed to Ohio."

The story about Joseph Eichar drilling for salt near Wooster and hitting oil was printed page 22 Wooster Daily Record of December 9, 1964. This story was orignally prepared by Mrs. Joseph Lake of N Y (ElizaWeth Eichar). She reported that a Benjamin Jones and William Totten enlisted Joseph Eichar in the well. At some 465 feet they hit a low grade of salt water. The oil came out in a gusher "as high as the highest trees".

In the Westmoreland County, PA court house there is a record of the grandchildren of Peter Eichar, from his son Joseph, applying for the portion of the estate due Joseph. This is filed April 4, 1839 and it refers to Peter's will dated September, 1814. In this will it indicates that Peter divided his estate equally amoung his eight children, he does however indicate that John is deceased. The application is filed by Joseph S. Lake who is married to Eleanor Eichar, granddaughter of Peter.
Wm. Candlish officiated at the wedding of Joseph and Elizabeth.
In 1840 Wayne County Probate records Joseph is appointed guardian for Christian Eicher.
His will leaves...three daughters Eleanor, Evaline, & Sarah the homestead and his furniture. They are to sell a portion and pay his daughter Lavina Hall $1,500; they have 3 years to make the payments of $500 interest free. Maria Graham get $5.00. Sons Joseph Jr and Henry are to divide the 160 acre Jackson County Kansas farm but they are to pay Lavinia Hall $500. John C Hall and D.C McClarran are named executors. He signed it March 2, 1888.

A PIONEER GONE
Joseph Eicher Dead, aged 82 years
It is with profound sorrow that we have to record the death of the pioneer citizen, Joseph Eichar, who departed this life Monday morning at 3 o'clock at his home in Wooster.
He was born March 13, 1813, in Westmoreland County, Pa., and in 1814, when he was one year old, was brought to Wayne county by his father Joseph Eichar, who entered land adjacent to where his son has just died. His father manufacturered salt there for early pioneers, the place being known as a "deer lick" where the wild deer rendezvoused to lick the salt water of the springs. He died october 17, 1821. His children were Peter Eichar, Joseph Eichar, David Eichar, Mrs. Joseph S. Lake, Mrs. James Jacobs, Ann Eichar and Rosanna Eichar all of whom have now passed away.
Joseph Eichar grew to manhood on that farm, following agricultural pursuits with success. In 1841 he married Miss Eliza Thompson, daughter of the pioneer David Thompson and for 13 years lived in the Eichar homestead. They then removed to Millbrook where within one year after going there Mrs. Eichar died, leaving six children. He returned to Wooster and a few years thereafter he purchased the farm on which he died. In 1858 he married Sarah Kobb, who died in September, 1877 leaving two daughters.
His surviving children are Mrs. W.M. Graham, of Jeromesville, Henry Eichar, of Topeka, Kansas, Joseph Eichar, Jr. , Mrs. John C. Hall, Misses E.E. Eichar, Eva Eichar, and Sadie Eichar of Wooster.
During his long life he made a good impression upon all who came within the circle of his acquaintance, which was large in town and country. He was an intelligent man industrious and liberal, good hearted and charitable, amiable and fond of social pleasurers. His judgement was good in business affairs, believed in forward movements in all sorts of legitimate enterprizes, and was an earnest supporter of those who favored progress. For the education of youth he was ever a zealous advocate. he was an honest man, and everybody liked and believed in "Uncle Joe". Many will long miss his familiar figure and cordial greeting, and in him know that one of the best of the old pioneers has passed away to be seen here on earth no more.
The funeral will take place to-day (Wednesday) at 2 o'clock with services at his home by Rev. Charles Herrion, of the First Presbyterian church.
