A land sale in Coshocton County is recorded to Hugh Elliott. This was an 80 acre plot in Range 7, Township 7, Section 1at a cost of $100.00. This would be about 1 -2 miles south of the town of Clark (then called Bloomfield) on the Holmes / Coshocton border. In 1969 AH and his mother Ruth Ellen Ports Heiser visited this location. Mom reported that she recalled visiting the spot with her father when she was young. In 1869 there was nothing left but a foundation. No roads go near the property and we had to hike quite a distance. There is a nice spring nearby and AH did bring back a hand made brick that has been made into a book end. At the time I estimated that the foundation measured 14 by 25 feet and it was carved into the side of the hill. I believe that Hugh and his daughter Nancy Ellen spent most of thier lives at this location. Hugh was involved in a number of land transactions in both Holmes and Coshocton counties. There is another Hugh Elliott in Coshocton County about this period and I have not yet got all of their transactions sorted out.

March 19, 1846
Hugh married Elizabeth Van Buskirk in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She was born August 31, 1824. The Van Buskirks lived near the Tuscarawas - Carroll Counties border near what is now the man made Atwood Lake. The Aaron Elliott family lived on the Carroll Couunty side of the line and it seems likely that Hugh went to visit the Aaron Elliott family and came home with Elizabeth. The relationship of Hugh to Aaron is not clear. Elizabeths parents and the Aaron Elliott family are both buried in a small cemetery on the north side of Atwood Lake.

1847
Hugh's parents had given about one acre of land to the Methodist Church and a small building was built on this portion of what was the Elliott farm. There is also a cemetery with the church. In 1964 people went through the cemetery and recorded grave stone records and left the typed list with several libraries( authored by Emily Dickenson). This list names includes three children that are of Hugh and Elizabeth. There are Rebecca Jane, born 1847 - died 1848; George L. born 1847 died November 3, 1852 and an unnamed infant died August 1852. This is not definite information, the son George L. is not included in the 1850 census.
It is not clear where Hugh and Elizabeth lived as Hugh had land in Mechanic Township, Holmes County and Clark Township, Coshocton County.

In the AH files there is a 1970 letter from Dr. Elgin Kintner of Marysville, Tennessee and he passes along some material on Fanny Blaine Elliott and her descendants. These include a grandson Andrew Elliott, son of George Elliott and his cousin mary Elliott. There is a copy of a letter Andrew wrote October 16, 1854 from Buchanan County, Iowa to his soon to be wife HannahWilson. He says the weather is healther in Iowa than in Coshocton but that there had been a wheat failure. They were married in December in Buchanan County. In addition Andrew's sister Laura married Jermiah Miller and they moved to Fairbank, Buchanan County, Iowa.

Hugh also owned 80 acres in Defiance County, Ohio. There are other Elliotts moving from Holmes - Coshocton area to Defiance in the 1850's. John and Nancy Carpenter Williams of Holmes County, sold Hugh W. Elliott of Coshocton County, Ohio 80 acres in Adams Township, Defiance County Ohio. Described as east 1/2 of S.W. 1/4 of Section 19; Township 5; n Range 5, for $400.00. This township is about 10miles NW of the city of Defiance and the Indiana boprder is about 25 miles to the west.

Hugh writes his will and it is obvious that he realizes he is terminally ill. He leaves the Clark Township property for the use of his daughter but the title is to go to her children. He gives the 80 acres he owns in Defiance County, Ohio to his sister Jane. TThe property is described as being in Range 5; Township 5; Section 19. Thomas Elliott of Defiance County has the deed. The 80 acres he owns in Buchannan County, Iowa are given to his sister Eleanor. Samuel Wilson of Buchannan County has the deed

December 26, 1857
He sells Lot #19; Range 6; township 8; section 2 in Holmes County. The price is $100.00 and the buyer is George Elliott, possibly his father. Tis is the same day that he signs his will.

Februray 5, 1858
Hugh makes a codiceil to his will - it is hard to read but it appears that he has sold home & land in Bloomfield and he gave the proceeds to his sister Jane. Now the Defiance land is to be sold at the best price and the proceeds go to the estate.

Sept 2, 1858
There is a invoice in the estate from Dr, J.G. Carr. He charged .10 for arsnic; .50 for morphine on Sept 6; extracted a tooth Dec. 4 for $1.50.
