BIOGRAPHY: CYAXARES II ASTYAGIS, otherwis e known as that Darius the Mede
who "took" the kingdom of the Chaldeans and killed Belshazzar
(q.v.), grandson of Nebuchadnezzar (q.v.).
BIOGRAPHY: Darius the Mede, as the Prophet Daniel called him, is known for
two things. First, he overthrew the Babylonians--as Daniel had predicted
first to Nebuchadnezzar him self in the Dream Incident (Daniel 2) and then
to Belshazzar in the Handwriting on the Wall Incident (Daniel 5). Second,
he immediately organized the 120 princes and 3 presidents, and named Daniel
as the first among the presidents.
B IOGRAPHY: Not long afterward, the remaining two presidents and most of
the prin ces suggested that anyone who made any petition of "God or
man" except for Darius himself ought to be thrown into a den of lions.
Darius signed the decree an d made it irrevocable, as Median and Persian
decrees always were.
BIOGRAPHY: Inevitably, President Daniel was found to have transgressed. Darius
had no ch oice but to follow his own law. So he threw Daniel into the lions'
den, after which he retired to his palace, ate nothing, couldn't sleep, and refused
even h is customary music for entertainment. Next morning he went to inspect
the lion s' den--and found Daniel still alive. The lions didn't eat him, neither
did th ey so much as scratch him.
BIOGRAPHY: Darius' rejoinder was to take Daniel o ut of the den and to throw
Daniel's accusers in, together with their wives and children. The lions killed
most of them before they even hit the bottom. Afte r that, Darius issued another
decree warning everyone to pay the proper respect to "the God of Daniel."
BIOGRAPHY: When at length Darius the Mede died, his nephew Cyrus (q.v.) very
probably read this account in the Royal Annals. This , as much as any geostrategic
consideration, might have moved Cyrus to decree t he rebuilding and re-establishment
of the Jews directly he assumed direct ruler ship of the combined Medo-Persian
Empire.
