First Generation
My great grandfather, Alexander Finlay, was born about 1730. He lived in Ardara, County Donegal, Ireland, Europe. He was an earnest and devout Christian, - a man of prayer. His was one of three families in all that part of the country who had family worship. At one time he was alone earnestly praying aloud when a neighbor came unawares and said: "What are you doing here, Alex, talking to yourself, all alone?" The answer came promptly: "I was not alone till you came." The intruder found that his coming had driven away the Divine Presence.
In early life he was one of a crew on board a vessel that had lost their reckoning and become destitute of food. So geat was their extremity that they agreed to kill one of their number for food. They drew cuts who should be the victim, and the lot fell on him. But before they had accomplished their purpose one of the crew, a man of powerful strength, befriended my ancestor, and the two of them went up in the rigging to defend themselves and threatened to kill any one who came to take them down. While up there they saw a vessel and made signals of distress and were rescued. Ever after that he did not want to see any food go to waste. After he became settled in life he is supposed to have been a farmer. Died before 1800. His wife Jane McKee. Their children............
