A Brief History of Warren, Texas

The tow n of Warren is said to have received it's name from a
Mr. Warren who wasconne cted with the first saw ill constructed there.
According to an account given by Lucian Barkley, an aged citizen of
Warren, this mill was built by A.Y. Yo ung, about 1880. Lucian,
better known as Lou was the son of Walter Barkley an d Kincaid.
To hem 12 children were born: Mandana, Tom, James, Lucian,
Rob ert, Jennie, Lola, Jane, May, Dora, Willie, Ross (Kit), and
Charlie. The fa mily moved from Harmony west of Woodville
to this mill in 1885 when Lucian wa s 10 years old. Through the
years he has been in and has seen the changes as they have come
to the town.

During the early years of his life Lou saw tw o other mills
built in Warren. The second mill was by Bruff and Cooper and a
third, known as the B & K Mill, was located near the big pond
where largelo gs from the nearby pine woods floated as they waited
for the saw and the plan er to make them into fine lumber. About
nine miles west of Warren, on theDol lardsville Road, was Sadell,
a smaller saw ill. From here a railroad waslaid through Warren
and was to have extended to Corsicana but bankruptcy forced i t to
terminate in the vicinity of Big Sandy School in Polk County.

Near W arren, too, were logging camps. Uncle Doc Lindsey
and his daughter Viloa, li ved at camp Bruff where she did the
cooking while he did the logging. One Sa turday night they returned
to Warren to look after the family and obtaina sup ply of grocereys.
Camp Annie and Camp Stutts were two other logging camps we st
of Warren, while to the east was Battle Ax where Miss Clara Mayo
of Spur ger began her Career as teacher.

The Station in Warren for this railroad wa s known as the
McHenry depot. At about the date of the building of thefirst
sawmill, the Texas and New Orleans Railroad was brought up
from Beaumont th rough Warren and extended as far North as
Rockland and, at a later date on to Dallas. This road gave the
town a second depot. In the building designated as such
there was not only the equipment for the depot and telegraph
stati on but also merchandise for a store. One of the early
managers of thestore w as Mr. Gregory and Charlie Williams,
later the grandfather of Mrs. James Alle n Riley, was salesman.
The principal business of the town for many years was large
store owned and operated by C.E. Goolsbee. Daniel
Dickersonhad a wo odship and Judge McNeil, who was
justice of the peace, had an officebuilding. Added to these
were the commisary company offices, doctor's office, etc.

The first church which Lou recalls was a union church
that stood near the J. V. Harris home. To the north east of this
church a Baptist Church building wa s later donated by Mr.
And Mrs. C.E. Goolsbee. The outstanding structure of the
town was the K.P. Hall, boasting two stories and a balcony
which was so mething very unusual for the day. Miss Jessie
Goolsbee of Warren gives this information concerning the
building: It was built in the late 1800's by Mr. Y oung,
the owner of the mill. The upper floor was used as a lodge
building b y the Knights of Pythias and later by the
Woodmen of the World and lower floo r served as an opera
house and theater. It had a stage with dressing rooms o n
either side and would seat a considerable of spectators.
In the early da ys traveling theatrical troupes gave
performances here and here also were sta ged many local
talent plays and concerts. In this building much ofthe
soci al life centered. It served as a skating rink, for
parties, civicmeetings, i ce cream or box suppers,
singing conventions, church services, dances and
o ther social affairs.
