John C Hall served in the 16 OVI during the Civil War as did his future wife's brother, Joseph Eichar. After his service with the 16th he re enlisted as a sergent in Company 'H' 102 OVI. He signed on originally with the 16th OVI, this was organized at camp Tiffin (Wooster) May 3, 1861 and was discharged Aug 18, 1861. The unit was reorganized as a 3 year unit in late 1861. June 1, 1863 he is appointed 3rd corporal; September 1, 1863 he is appointed Sergeant. May 19, 1863 he was wounded, concusion.
On June 13 , 1864 his right foot and ankle was injured at Morganza Bend, LA. In the Declaration for Original Invalid Pension on Feb. 2, ???? he claims that while on parade he received a severe cut on the ball of his right foot. He was compelled to use crutches and while going to stool he slipped and fell and injured his right ankle and he could do no duty after this time. The same report claims he was discharged at Camp Chase Ohio on or about 31 Oct. 1864. On Feb. 28, 1865 he enlisted in the 102nd. and was discharged July 12, 1865 at Huntsville, Alabama as a supernumerary. He was in Company H, note that Companies A & G were from Holmes County. He calls himself a farmer when he enlisted.
On May 19, 1863 he was wounded, concusion during the battle for Vicksburg. In obit the report is a wound in the left forearm.
John applied for a pension on June 4, 1898
The obit of Vinnie Eicher Hall appeared in the Octoer 20, 1897 Wayne County Democrat. In the column right next to her obit there is a story about five horses running away and John C Hall stopped two of them at his coal yard. The John Hall obit follows:

Sad is the news of the death of John C. Hall, which occurred at his home just west of the city at 11 o'clock on Friday. He was one of older residents of Wooster, being 64 years of age and having lived in Wayne township his entire life, and is well known and held in the esteem of all Wooster residents and peoiple who knew him from abroad.
Death was due to a complication of diseases from which he suffered for about a year, but always bearing his suffering in a quiet manner and did not complain, being that the will of the lord, not his, be done.
HIS WAR HISTORY
John C. Hall was born in Wayne County, Franklin township in September 1842. He enlisted as a soldier at Wooster September 10, 1861,and became a member of Co. H, 16th Ohio Voluntary Infantry as a private. He was promoted to the rank of a sergeant. He was discharged October 31, 1864, but reenlisted in Co. G 189th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was then discharged in Huntsville, Alabama, July 20, 1865, after a service of 3 years and 10 months. He figured in many if the most important battles of the war and received an injury to his left forarm while in a battle. He was one of the ten men detailed to shool the bushwacker, Lieutenant Robertson.
HIS LIFE AS AN OFFICER
For 10 years he served Wooster township as a trustee and held that office at the time of his death. As such official he became well known in the city and his diligent work among the poor children will be long remembered by residents of this city and no doubt, by some of those he helped on their life's struggle. He was also a member of the Given Post, No. 133, G.A.R. and as such member always had a hand in something for the welfare of the old soldiers and the general public.
He was twice married and three children, the result of the union with his first wife, together with his second wife remain to mourn the loss of a loving father and a devoted husband.The children are, Glen Wellington, Mrs. Dale and Robert Hall, all of whom reside in this city. A brother and sister also survive Mr. Hall, William Hall, who resides in Fredericksburg and Mrs. Julia Frank, of Moreland.
Besides these relatives a large circle of friends survive and his life's work will long be remembered by them. END

John C. Hall - was athree years and ten months a soldier. He enlisted at Wooster, September 10, 1861, and on October 2nd was there mustered into Company C, 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as private. At Cumberland Ford, Kentucky, February, 1862 he was promoted to corporal, and at Iberia, Louisiana, in October, 1863 he was promoted sergant. From this enlistment he was discharged at Columbus, October 31, 1864 and he re-enlisted February 28, 1865, at Wooster, mustering into Company K, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, corporal. He was promoted sergant and after five months service was transferred to company G, 189th Ohio Volunteers, with rank of corporal, served a few weeks with that regiment and was mustered out at Huntsville, Alabama, July 20, 1865. He participated in all the battles, marches and engagements of each regiment during his term of service with it, his battle roll including the following engagements: Cumberland Gap, Tazewell, Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Thompsons Hill, Champions Hills, Black River Bridge, the two assaults on Vicksburg, Jackson and the battle of Alexandria, Louisiana, in the spring of 1864. He was wounded in the first assault on Vicksburg, May 19, 1863, a piece of shell striking him in the left forearm, and shortly afterward was stunned by a bursting shell, which caused concussion of the brain, leaving him senseless for an hour and a half, but only absented himself from duty two days on account thereof. While in the 102nd he was one of ten men detailed to shoot the bushwhacker, Lieutenant Robertson. He is now a member of Given Post, No. 133, G.A.R. Born in Wayne County, September 21, 1842, John C. Hall is the sone of David and Mattie (Caskey) Hall. In his native countyr, Octber 21, 1874 he married Vinnie K., daughter of Joseph and Eliza (Thompson) Eichar. She was born in Wayne county, June 4, 1853, and their children were born: Glen Wellington, March 24, 1876; Elsie Dale, June 9, 1882.
