Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the CrummyFuneral Home, Reynolds, for L.B. Halstead, age 85, of La Plata, Mo., whopassed away January 24 at his home after several years of ill health. TheRev. George Fry, pastor of the Hamle t Presbyterian church, officiated andburial was in the Reynolds village cemetery.
Pallbearers were Blaine Kendall, Vernon Sipes, John Dunn, RobertKelly, Elden Lingafelter and Norman MacDonald.
Born Feb. 15, 1874, south of Reynolds, he was a son of Cass and ElinorNeely Halstead. He received his education in area schools and attended aDavenport business school. On Feb. 27, 1906, he was married at his farmhome south of Reynolds to Id a Kendall. After their marriage they residedin the area for three years, moving to West Liberty, Iowa, in 1910. Mr.Halstead resided there until about fours years ago when he moved to LaPlata.
In his active years around West Liberty Mr. Halstead was a vigorouspromotor of his community and especially interested in boosting the WestLiberty fair. Every summer about a month before fair time Ben would beover in Reynolds to leave premiu m books and distribute postersadvertising the West Liberty fair. He was a good citizen and a backer ofworthwhile projects. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, MasonicLodge and the Rotary club at West Liberty.
Mr. Halstead is survived by three brothers, Riley and Prentice of LaPlata and Lloyd, Muscatine; two sisters, Mrs. Ivan Boyles, Joy, and MissMary Halstead, Great Falls, Mont. and several nieces and nephews. He waspreceded in death by his wife an d two brothers. Source and date unkown.

On 27 Feb 1906 when L. Benjamin was 32, he married Ida Kendall [1],daughter of Augustus Kendall & Lucretia Content Wait, in Hamlet, IL. Bornon 5 Oct 1866 in Preemption, Mercer Co., IL. Ida died in Iowa City, IA on15 Jan 1944; she was 77.

Prominent Mercer County Couple Wed
Benjamin Halstead and Miss Ida Kendall Principals in Ceremony at Hamlet

Hamlet, Feb. 28(Argus Special) Last evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs.A. Kendall of near Hamlet, took place one of the prettiest home weddingsof the season, when their daughter, Ida, became the bride of BenjaminHalstead in the presence of 50 re latives and friends. The Lohengrinwedding march was played by Miss Mary Schriver and to its strains theofficiating minister, Mr. Tidball and the bride and groom descended thestairs, passing through an aisle of ribbons, held in place by MadeleneCan dor, a niece of the bride, and Grace Tidball, to their places in theparlor. The bride wore a beautiful dress of cream eolienne made princess.During the ceremony Mrs. Grace Tidball sang the Lohengrin bridal chorus.Immediately after the ceremon y I Love You, Dear Heart, was sung by MissLillie Marsh. After the congratulations, an elegant course supper wasserved. The presents were numerous and beautiful. The color scheme, greenand white, prevailed. Among the guests from a distance wer e Mr. and Mrs.E. W. Kendall and Mrs. Ola Candor and daughter, Madelene.

Kendall when theirdaughter, Miss Ida, became the bride of Benjamin Halstead in the presenceof about fifty relatives and friends . Promptly at the hour of 7 thebridal party descended the stairs, preceded by Madelene Candor, a nieceof the bride, and Grace Tidball, who formed an aisle for the bridal partyto pass through, the bride and groom taking their places under abeautifu l white wedding bell suspended in the bay window, where theceremony was performed by Rev. Tidball. As the bridal party descended thestairs Lohengrins (Wagner) bridal chorus was sung by Miss Lillie Marsh.The bride wore a beautiful dress of crea m colored eolience, madeprincess, and carried a shower bouquet of brides roses. After receivingthe congratulations and best wishes of their friends and elaborate threecourse supper was served by the brides Sunday school class, who weredresse d in white. The house was decorated in the wedding colors, greenand white. The presents were numerous and beautiful. Among the guestsfrom a distance were Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Heres A Hobby That Proves Generous Benefit To Others
(This is the fifth in a series of articles concerning the hobbies ofwomen in Muscatine and surrounding communities).

Most people who have hobbies usually are saving or collecting something,but heres one woman whose hobby benefits others much more than herself.Mrs. L.B. Halstead, of near West Liberty, has a passion for making quiltsand rugs, but she always give s them away as soon as they are finished.Some bride or propesctive bride in the community, or some relative ordear friend, is always the lucky one.
Mrs. Halstead says she has made about 50 quilts in the past severalyears. Just last winter alone she made nine, in addition to the myriad oflovely rugs she braided.
Since quilt-making has become so popular again, many of her relativessend her scraps of materials, she says. One bundle received required$1.65 for postage.
All patterns for her braided rugs are her original ideas. She hasntcopied a one. An theyre lovely things with both delicately and brilliantblended colors. One especially attractive one was an iris pattern ofpurple and green which was made ou t of the tops of cotton stockings.
Another red, black and green rug had only one dyed piece of material, andthat was her sisters going-away dress.
Mrs. Halstead has made more than 100 rugs recently. Her sister-in-lawshas 25 of Mrs. Halsteads rugs in her home.
The quilt patterns are just as beautiful and unusual. In her dahlia quiltthere is not one piece alike. Other of her favorite quilt patterns aremonkey-wrench, Irish chain, and snowball. With the latter she won firstpremium at the West Liberty fair , and has won many other awards with herwork.

On 27 Feb 1906 when L. Benjamin was 32, he married Ida Kendall [1], daughter of Augustus Kendall & Lucretia Content Wait, in Hamlet, IL. Born on 5 Oct 1866 in Preemption, Mercer Co., IL. Ida died in Iowa City, IA on 15 Jan 1944; she was 77.

Prominent Mercer County Couple Wed
Benjamin Halstead and Miss Ida Kendall Principals in Ceremony at Hamlet

Hamlet, Feb. 28—(Argus Special) —Last evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. Kendall of near Hamlet, took place one of the prettiest home weddings of the season, when their daughter, Ida, became the bride of Benjamin Halstead in the presence of 50 relatives and friends. The Lohengrin wedding march was played by Miss Mary Schriver and to its strains the officiating minister, Mr. Tidball and the bride and groom descended the stairs, passing through an aisle of ribbons, held in place by Madelene Candor, a niece of the bride, and Grace Tidball, to their places in the parlor. The bride wore a beautiful dress of cream eolienne made princess. During the ceremony Mrs. Grace Tidball sang the Lohengrin bridal chorus. Immediately after the ceremony “I Love You, Dear Heart,” was sung by Miss Lillie Marsh. After the congratulations, an elegant course supper was served. The presents were numerous and beautiful. The color scheme, green and white, prevailed. Among the guests from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Kendall and Mrs. Ola Candor and daughter, Madelene.

At the home of Oscar Marsh on Saturday afternoon the Sunday school class of Miss Ida Kendall gave her a kitchen “shower”. A very pleasant afternoon was spent, after which a sumptuous supper was served.

One of the prettiest home weddings of the season occurred Wednesday evening of last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. Kendall when their daughter, Miss Ida, became the bride of Benjamin Halstead in the presence of about fifty relatives and friends. Promptly at the hour of 7 the bridal party descended the stairs, preceded by Madelene Candor, a niece of the bride, and Grace Tidball, who formed an aisle for the bridal party to pass through, the bride and groom taking their places under a beautiful white wedding bell suspended in the bay window, where the ceremony was performed by Rev. Tidball. As the bridal party descended the stairs Lohengrin’s (Wagner) bridal chorus was sung by Miss Lillie Marsh. The bride wore a beautiful dress of cream colored eolience, made princess, and carried a shower bouquet of bride’s roses. After receiving the congratulations and best wishes of their friends and elaborate three course supper was served by the bride’s Sunday school class, who were dressed in white. The house was decorated in the wedding colors, green and white. The presents were numerous and beautiful. Among the guests from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Kendall of Plano, Illinois; Mrs. Ola Candor and daughter of North Dakota; Misses Elsie and Sophia Parmenter of Lyndon, Ill., and Miss Mary Lee of Urbana.

Here’s A Hobby That Proves Generous Benefit To Others
(This is the fifth in a series of articles concerning the hobbies of women in Muscatine and surrounding communities).

Most people who have hobbies usually are saving or collecting something, but here’s one woman whose hobby benefits others much more than herself. Mrs. L.B. Halstead, of near West Liberty, has a passion for making quilts and rugs, but she always gives them away as soon as they are finished. Some bride or propesctive bride in the community, or some relative or dear friend, is always the lucky one.
Mrs. Halstead says she has made about 50 quilts in the past several years. Just last winter alone she made nine, in addition to the myriad of lovely rugs she braided.
Since quilt-making has become so popular again, many of her relatives send her scraps of materials, she says. One bundle received required $1.65 for postage.
All patterns for her braided rugs are her original ideas. She hasn’t copied a one. An they’re lovely things with both delicately and brilliant blended colors. One especially attractive one was an iris pattern of purple and green which was made out of the tops of cotton stockings.
Another red, black and green rug had only one dyed piece of material, and that was her sister’s going-away dress.
Mrs. Halstead has made more than 100 rugs recently. Her sister-in-laws has 25 of Mrs. Halstead’s rugs in her home.
The quilt patterns are just as beautiful and unusual. In her dahlia quilt there is not one piece alike. Other of her favorite quilt patterns are monkey-wrench, Irish chain, and snowball. With the latter she won first premium at the West Liberty fair, and has won many other awards with her work.
