[v01t1586.FTW]

Bertha was a seamstress in Cleveland. She worked for many wealthy families and often lived in their homes and traveled with them. A family named Gardiner was the primary client. She had a reputation of saying very much what she thought and she did not want for thoughts. She and her brother Henry often had arguments well into their 70's. At one point when they were in there 70's they got into a discussion about physical prowess and ended with both of them doing push ups on Henry's living room floor. Elmer Heiser recalls the time as a youth when Aunt Bertha came to dinner with the family. After the meal she asked Elmer to please get her a finger bowl. Henry Heiser said, "Elmer, tell Aunt Bertha that the bath tub is upstairs". Beryl Peck reports that Bertha would spend 3-4 months each year in New York sewing for the very wealthy Gardiner family.

A spot check of a few Cleveland City Directories have Bertha listed as a dressmaker living at 10813 Earle Ave. N.E. in 1913 & 1916

The Cleveland Plain Dealer had the following obit.

Bruce Heiser, 84, silversmith, designed and repaired jewelery
by Karen Henderson
Bruce D. Heiser once used his skills as a master gold- and silversmith to repair the 200 pound Davis Cup tennis trophy when the tournament played in Cleveland in the early 1970's.
Working in the basement of his home, he repaired metal art objects, antiques and precious pieces of jewelry. He also designed unique pieces of jewelery.
Research he conducted on a silver chalice he was repairing for an antiques dealer disclosed that it was made in Ethiopia in the 1600s.
Mr. Heiser, 84, was born in Cleveland, where he spent most of his life. He died Thursday at Lutheran Medical Center in Cleveland.
He joined Potter & Mellen Inc. jewelers after graduating from Lincoln High School in 1929 and served an apprenticeship for master art metal craftsmanship.
While working, he studied sculpting, figure drawing and design at John Huntington Polytechnic Institute and the Art Institute. He also was tutored at the Louis C. Tiffany Foundation at Oyster Bay, Long Island, on art metal work, enameling, jewelry design, painting and etching.
During World War II, Mr. Heiser served in Aberdeen, Md., and White Sands, NM., beginning in the infantry's 99th Division and transferring to Ordnance. He made models of new tanks and guns, and after the war he worked with Werner Von Braun, and early architect of the U.S. space program.
In 1945, Mr. Heiser started his own business and later went to work for Westinghouse as a draftsman. He also worked for Precision Products, his brother's business, in the late 1940s. In 1951, he began working for the General Motors Tank Plant.
After retiring, he ran his own business designing and repairing jewelry for area jewelers. He was a member of the Masons.
He is survived by his sons, David B. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Charles "Chip" of Cleveland; a daughter, Shirley B. Heiser of Cleveland, three granddaughters and a grandson. His wife, Neva, died in 1989.
Arrangements were handled by Malloy Memorial Services, 1575 W. 117thSt. Cleveland. No services were scheduled.

In March 1969 Arlan Heiser visited Fred & Marion Heiser and we discussed Heinrich (Henry). They believe that his family owned a tavern in Darmstadt, Germany and that he had a sister in Albany, N.Y.. They think he went there after entering the USA but was married in Detroit. They claim he was quite bright and could speak seven languages. They really did not speak highly of him.

They claim that when World War I started Heinrich was back in Germany and that he was not allowed to return immediately. They were not sure when or how he returned because he did not announce his return, rather someone just happened to see him on Cedar Avenue.

Fred thinks that Heinrich divorced Kathryn in Kokomo, Indiana. Fred recalls that some stranger come to the house seeking Heinrich as he wanted to kill him. The stranger claimed that Heinrich had marrried the mans mother and left with all her money. Arlan Heiser tried, in 1969, to check on the Kokomo story. I went to the county court house and checked the records from 1880 thru 1930 and couldn't find a record of a Henry Heiser but there are some Heisers and Hyzers in the county.

Heinrich worked as a pattern maker and as a cabinetmaker. At one time he worked for an Van Dorn Iron Company. He would disappear from home for periods up to six months and his children really have a very low opinion of him. They think that he may have a patent in his name.

There is a 1953 typed page history of Jessie Street (E 69) that mentions Henry living at #58 in 1886 with two sons Henry and Fred.

My cousin, Richard Heiser, did genealogy and has a copy of a birth certificate for Heinrich from Kirtorf, Germany

Buried Butternut Ridge Cemetery, North Olmsted, Ohio. At time of death his address was 7919 Carnegie Ave. Cleveland, Ohio.

Marian Heiser Vogle recalls that Heinrich lived with them several times during her childhood. She says he was not a very demonstrative man and each time he came he would shake hands with her and she would find a 5 or 10 dollar bill in her hand. Heinrichs son Fred would never leave his daughter and father alone because he felt that Heinrich was a "real rounder". The Kokomo story may not have been marriage but rather a common-law arrangement.

May, 1994 AH visited the Cuyahoga County Archieves on Franklin Blvd. They have Probate Court records indicating that on October 11, 1880 Heinrich made naturalization application. In the first document he claims that he arrived in the USA on "8th of June 1865", and that he had continued to live in the U.S. since. It is a form for immigrants who came to this country before the age of 18 (page 70). The Probate Judge completing this form has written in the name as Heinrich Heyser but the signature is of "H Heiser. The handwriting is not very good. The second form has the same date and again lists Heinrich Heyser. This is the Oath of Application signed by H. Heiser and Oath of Witness (page 215). The witness to Heinrich's good behavior is one H.P. Brown. The Court is ordered to issue a certificate of citizenship upon the proper payments of costs.

March, 1994 AH visited the genealogical library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They had Albany, NY city directories and I looked through for Heiser- Schwab - Shafer. In 1869 there was a Jacob Heiser, furnaceman and Abraham Heiser, peddler. In 1870 there is a Henry Heiser, cabinetmaker, living at 73 Central Ave. There are no Schwab's and the only Shafer is Philip a letter carrier and he lives at 133 Central Ave.. In 1871 Henry is listed at the same address. In 1872 Henry is not listed. In 1873 there is a Henry Heise (NO 'R') listed as a machinist, also in this year there is a Frederick Schwab, gardener living at 93 Sherman Ave. In 1874 Henry Heiser is a laborer living at 759 Clinton Ave. and there is a George Schwab, laborer, living at 56 Broad. In the 1875 directory Henry is still listed as a laborer, and there is a Joseph Schwab, junk man on 78 Broad and Mrs. Philip Schwab, widow, at 13 Irving. Also in this year there is a William Shafer, shoemaker living at 583 Clinton. In the 1876 directory Henry Heiser is at 579 Clinton; Albert Schwab, sterotyper at 13 Irving. Henry is still listed in the 1877 directory. In this year his son Henry was born reportedly in Detroit so this may not be "our" Heiser family.

May 10, 1994 at Western Reserve Historical Society I examined the book, "Germans to America"; vol 16 by Glazier; this covers the period Nov. 1864 thru Nov. 1865. The book lists four Heisers; NO Heisser-Heyser-Hiser-Hizer --there were 22 Hauser but none with first name or initial "H". Of the four Heisers one is listed as H. Heiser age 20 male from Germany with no village listed and his occupation was farmer. The vessel was the "Germania" that arrived in New York, June 12, 1865 from Hamburg and Southhampton. He was the only Heiser on this vessel. This ship arrived less than a week after the date Henry (Heinrich) gave on his immigration papers and he was only 15 in 1865. Very probably this was our ancestor. The other Heiser names in this volume were Christopf - Elizabeth - Wilhelm. The were no Schwab's listed on his vessel.

I spot checked several issues of the Cleveland City Directories.
1890-91 There are 12 Heiser's listed including Henry. He is described as a patternmaker living at 58 Jessie
1896-97 There are 14 Heiser's listed including Henry, patternmaker; Henry Jr. laborer; Fred clerk; and all are living at 549 Quincy.
1903-04 There are 20 Heisers. There is Henry, patternmaker and Frederick W. clerk - both are living at 137 Vienna. The other Henry is not included???

June '94 AH visited Albany but learned nothing. Marriage records were not recorded before 1881. There records of the First Lutheran Church produced nothing. I searched Albany, Ward 10 census with no success, Ward 9 is almost impossible to read. The Schwab's that lived at 93 Sherman and this street is only one block north of the Central Ave.

Henry's brother told Arlan Heiser that Henry left school after the 6th grade because he was more interested in mechanical devices. He did take some technical training, including advanced math, as an adult.

Addresses lived?

When living in New York he worked for the Cleveland firm, W.S. Tyler, who made ornamental iron such as elavator encloseures and stairways. In NYC they lived in Flatbush (Brooklyn). They were there for about a year and then moved to Montreal, again with Tyler. Bert and Elmer went to first grade here in a private school, Outremonte Academy. Stayed here less than one year. They then returned to Cleveland. Shortly after the family returned he took a job with the Astrup Awning Co. on W. 25th Street - he was the superintendent of the hardward manufacturing division where they made all the awning hardware, pullys, cranks, etc.. The family moved to first to the east side for a very short time and when he hired at Astrup they moved to Forestdale, which is about 3 blocks north from Denison off of W25th. The boys went to East Denison school. Less than a year later they moved to Kuchle Ave. and during WWI this was changed to Delmar Ave. because Kuchle was too German.
About 1925-6 they moved to Fairview Park- about Parkview off 210.
