All research of the Haywood family lineage indicates that Francis was our first surname ancestor to sail from England to the shores of America settling in the newly established Colony of Virginia. The first existing records of Francis has been found dated August 12, 1650 in Patent Book Volume 2, page 248 listing him as Francis Hawkwood at which time in conjunction with 49 other settlers he received a patent for about 50 acres of land in Charles City, County, Virginia. The land was located near the head of Powells Creek adjacent to Weynoake, Old Town. (Reference Cavaliers and Pioneers).

Since this is the first record found of Francis, some researchers have indicated that he arrived on these shores in 1650, but this writer disagrees with this assumption having found a Francis Haywood arriving in 1639. Based on this finding, this writer speculates that the real surname of Francis was Haywood when he departed England and when he arrived on the shores of America. Therefore, it is believed that he was born in England about 1620, bonded out as an apprentice for his passage to America and becoming a "Freeman," in 1649/1650, thereafter becoming eligible to apply for a land patent.

The reason he is later shown as Hawkwood is simply because of the poor education of government officals in the early Colonies. Note, the many surname changes not only in this Haywood line, but other early day family names. He did receive a second land patent for about 50 acres of land on July 30, 1670, under the name of Francis Hawkwood. This land was located on the south side of the James River in Charles County, Virginia. Francis married Elizabeth Creed the daughter of Ralph and Grace Creed, date of marriage is unknown. Francis Hogwood (name in will) died between January 3, 1676, the date of the will and may 18, 1677, the date the will was probated. (Surry County Virginia Record Book 1671 - 84, page 122).

George Hogwood, Sr., the progenitor of this Haywood history outline married Ann_______ about
1688 in Surry County, Virginia. He made his last will dated December 20, 1727 (under the surname of George Hogwood) in Surry County, Virginia. He deceased shortly thereafter.

After the death of his father, he and his brothers moved to Brunswick County, Virginia to occupy the Land Grant made to George, Sr. just before his death. The land grant was divided among the surviving sons.

George, Jr. sold his land in Brunswick County on January 28, 1755. He then moved to Orange County, North Carolina where he also owned land. Parents: George HOGWOOD and ANN.
