Clarkson: Svitoslav warred against the Khazars, taking theirstone
fortress at Sarkel on the Don in 963 and destroyed their power when hesacked
their capital, Itil, on the lo wer Volga in 968. He also plundered thecapital
of the Volga Bulgars in 965. A fierce horde of steppe nomads, the Pechenegs,
moved in to supplant the Khaza rs, and, in the end, Sviatoslav died at the hands
of the Pechenegs, whose chi ef had his skull made into a gold-encrusted drinking
cup (972).

Robert contributed to the restora tion of Henry King of France to his throne,
and received from the gratitude of that monarch, the Vexin, as an additional
to his patrimonial domains. In the 8th year of his reign, curiosity or devotn
induced him to undertake a pilgrima ge to the Holy Land, where the fatiges of
the journey and the heat of the clim ate so impaired his consitution he died
on his way home.

Ralph de Greystoke, 3rd Baron, was born 15 Aug., 1298/9. He was summone d to Par liament from 15 May, 1321, to 17 Sept., 1322. His Lordship, by virtue of a spec ial dispensation from the Pope, married Alice, daughter of Hugh de Au dley, they being within 3rd and 4th degrees of consanguinity; and had an only s on, Willia m. Lord Greystock having been a principal in the seizing of Sir Gilb ert de Midd leton, in the castle of Mitford, for treason, was soon afterwards p oisoned, whi le at breakfast, through the contrivance of that person. His wife' s mother was Iseude, daughter of Sir Edmund Mortimer, of Wigmore, County Herefo rd.
He di ed 14 July, 1323, aged nearly 24, and was buried in Newminster Abb ey. His widow had livery of her dower 12 August and 27 Sept., 1323, and of the knight's fees , cornages, and advowsons of her dower 18 and 26 of Dec. followin g, all of whic h had been assigned by the King.
