As John Jacob Ryan Jr was called "the Father of Lake Charles", his fathe r John Jacob Senior was literally the father of Calcasieu Parish. In addition t o bringing a pioneer spirit to our territory, he and Mary Ann brought a large f amily of daughters who began the Moss, Ellender, Vincent, Clifton, Landry, Roye r, Reon, Rigmaiden and Reeves families of southwest Louisiana.
Jacob Ryan Sr . was born between 1768 and 1772 in Savannah, Georgia. The family moved to Pens acola, Fla. and then Louisiana in the late 1700s.
Jacob Sr. married Mary Anne Hargrave in 1793 in St. Martin Parish. In 1793, Ryan moved to the Vermilion Riv er and then in 1817 relocated further west to a site near Bayou D'Inde, later k nown as the Prairie or Vincent Settlement.
The exact date when John J. Ryan and his sister, Celeste, who married Francis Daniel. came to the Attakapas Coun try, is not known. Records in St. Martin Parish show that he registered his bra nd in 1792. He was married in 1793 to Mary Anne Hargrave, daughter of Benjamin Hargrave and Rebecca Gaultney of Virginia. Francis Daniel and William Grecien w ere witnesses to the Ryan-Hargrave marriage in St. Martin Parish. The church re corded Savannah, Georgia as John Jacob's birthplace on the christening document s of some of his children. Their marriage certificate states the names of their parents. Margaret Barclay is John's mother.
Adjoining land grants were recei ved by John Jacob Ryan, Benjamin Hargrave [his father-in-law), and Francis Dani el [his brother-in-law) in 1802 and 1803, on the west side of the Vermilion Riv er below Abbeville. John Jacob and his father-in-law Benjamin sold their land t o George Faulk around 1812. George was also married to one of the Hargrave sist ers, so the land remained in the family.
Twelve of the children of John Jaco b Ryan and Mary Anne Hargrave were born on the Vermilion Bayou land grant. In 1 817 they left this home on the bayou, boarded a schooner and sailed for the Rio Hondo Lands.
Sailing up the Big River(Calcasieu), they lowered their anchor o n the west bank of the river and went ashore at a site near Indian Marias (Bayo u dlnde), which they chose for their home. This site came to be known as the Pr airie or Vincent Settlement. It was here, in 1818, that their thirteenth child, named for her mother. was born and she was reputed to be the first white child born west of the Calcasieu River.
The present day Citgo and Firestone Refiner ies are on the Vincent Settlement site. The community is now known as Rose Bluf f, named after Rose Pujo.
Jacob and Mary had only two sons: Isaac, born Marc h 1, 1805, and Jacob Jr., born Feb. 14, 1816.
Isaac Ryan met a tragic end when he died fighting at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. Jim Bowie was a friend of the family and had seeked advise on the his chances to return to Louisiana dur ing the early 1830s. His land deals had gotten him into trouble. One of his con fidants undoubtedly was John Jacob, who probably advised him to stay in Texas. John Jacob's elder son, Isaac, idolized Bowie, and was influenced to join himat the Alamo.
Their other son, John Jacob Ryan Jr became "the father of Lake Cha rles".
The daughters all married and remained in Imperial Calcasieu Parish.Des cendants of this family make up a substantial portion of the parish population. Jacob Sr., died Sept. 7, 1846.
George Ryan, born 1827 on Ryan property,was the slave and trusted right hand man of both John Jacob Senior and Junior.His f amily is also recorded in this database. His family is also one of the pioneer families of southwest Louisiana.
