Carloman II of Austrasia b orn about 751, was the son of Pepin III the Short.

Carloman II came to rule Austrasia, the eastern kingdom of the Frankish Empire, the co-heir of his fathe r Pepin who came to rule in 751 by overthrowing the Merovingians. Austrasia w as the home territory of the Carolingians (descendants of Charlemagne), who ros e to power as hereditary mayors of the palace in Austrasia. Austrasia had the capital at Metz, and comprised northeastern France, the Low Countries (later Be lgium and the Netherlands), and western and southern Germany.

Carloman II, s on of Pepin III, became joint ruler of the Kingdom of France with his brother C harles when Pepin III died in 768. Carloman died in 771, leaving his brother C harles as so ruler, who became known as Charles the Great (Charlemagne).

Charlemagne, Emperor Of The Holy Roman Empire, King of the
Franks was king of the Franks from AD 768 to 814 and 'Emperor
of the Romans' from 800 to 814. He became a key figure in the
development of western Europe's medieval civiliz ation. By his
almost constant military campaigns, Charlemagne created a vast
empire in the West which included much of the western part of
the old Roman Em pire as well as some new territory. He was the
first Germanic ruler to assume the title of emperor, and the
'empire' he revived lasted in one form or anothe r for a
thousand years. Culturally and politically, he left his mark on
the n ewly rising civilization of the West. Probably no ruler of
the early Middle Ag es better deserved the title of 'The Great.'

Charlemagne was the son of Pepi n the Short, and the grandson of
Charles Martel. From 768 to 771, Charlemagne shared Pepin's
kingdom with his brother, Carloman. When Carloman died,
Charle magne became sole ruler. He took up with energy the work
begun by his father a nd grandfather. His first step was to
repress his hostile neighbors. Charlemag ne gained wide acclaim
for his outstanding military ability, persistence, and success.
He waged more than 50 campaigns against neighboring Germanic
peoples on all sides, and against the Avars, Slavs, Byzantines,
and Moors.

Charlem agne's first great war was against the Lombards, a
Germanic people who had inv aded Italy in the late 500's. They
had been a source of trouble to the popes e ver since. In
conquering them, Charlemagne followed Pepin's policy of
friends hip and cooperation with the Roman Catholic Church. This
also served Charlemag ne's own interests, because he became
ruler of the Lombard kingdom in Italy.

The long Saxon war was the most important of Charlemagne's
military ventures . The Saxons, who held the whole northwestern
part of Germany, were pagans. Th eir defeat after 30 years of
war prepared the way for the religious conversion and
civilization of Germany.

By means of other wars, Charlemagne put down a rebellion in
Aquitaine, added Bavaria to his kingdom, and established
sever al border states to protect his outlying conquests. In
eastern Europe, he defe ated the Slavs and Avars and made
possible eastward migration by the Germans.

Charlemagne had built a vast and sprawling state that shared
borders with s uch different peoples as the Slavs, Byzantines,
and Moslems. He defended the R oman Catholic Church and
constantly extended its power. He was far more powerf ul than
the imperial successors of Constantine, the first Christian
emperor i n the West, and he ruled a much more extensive area.
Because of his great hold ings, he decided to revive the Roman
Empire, but as a new empire that was Euro pean and Christian in
Character. The relations of the popes with the Byzantine , or
Eastern Roman, emperors in Canstantinople had been breaking
down since t he middle 700's. An alliance between the Roman
Catholic Church and the Franks, accomplished by proclaiming

During the battle at Verdun in 782, Charlemagne executed 4,500hostages. and isssued h is "Capitulation de partibus Saxoniae"(Capitulation of Saxony).

Charlemagne was crowned head of the western Roman Empire at Rome onChristmas Day. His coro nation was not recognized by the Empress Ireneof the Eastern Roman Empire.

28. Charlemagne, Charles the Great. With the consent of the great nobles,
Charlemagne, Charles the Great, became King of F rance and Holy Roman
Emperor of the West from 771 to 814, following the death of his brother.
He was born April 2, 742, probably at Aix-La-Chapelle. When on ly twelve
years old we find him commissioned to receive and welcome the pontif f who
came to implore his father's aid against the barbarians that threatened
Rome. He probably accompanied his father in his campaigns at an early age,
bu t the first time that we really see him in the field, is on the renewal
of the war with the rebellious Duke of Aquitaine.

Upon the death of Pepin, in 768, Charlemagne and his younger brother
Carloman succeeded to equal portions of o ne of the most powerful of
European kingdoms, bounded by the Pyrenees, the Alp s, Mediterranean, and
the ocean. But this would hardly enabled the monarchs, e ven had they been
united, to resist successfully the incursions of the barbaro us tribes on
the German frontiers of France, which had commenced with the firs t
establishment of the Frankish dominion in Gaul; and which were kept alive
b y the constant pouring forth of fresh hordes from the overpopulated
north. The situation of Charlemagne was rendered yet more perilous by the
massive enmity of his brother, and the rebellion of Hunald, the turbulent
Duke of Aquitaine. But fortunately Charlemagne had a genius equal to the
difficulties of his sit uation; though his brother refused to aid him, he
defeated Huald; and no less illustrious by his clemency than by his valor
and military skill, he forgave t he vanquished rebel.

Desiderius, the King of Lombardy, had made large encr oachments upon the
states of the Roman Pontiff, whose cause was taken up by Ch arlemagne. This
led to feuds, which Bertha, his mother, endeavored to appease by arranging
a marriage between her son and the daughter of the Lombard. But
Charlemagne soon took a disgust to the wife thus imposed upon him, and
repudia ted her, that he might marry Hildegarde, the daughter of a noble

family in Swa bia. Thus he married Hildegarde of Swabia (Linzgau),
Countess, born in 757/758 , died April 30, 782/3.

In 771 Carloman died, and Charlemagne was elected to the vacant throne, to
the exclusion of his nephews, whose extreme youth mad e then incapable of
wearing the crown in such troubled times. Gilberge, the wi dow of Carloman,
immediately fled, and sought refuse with Desiderius, the comm on retreat
for all who were hostile to the Frankish monarch.

From that ti me, sole ruler during a reign of forty-three years, he waged
incessant wars on all his borders, subduing rebellions, extending his
domains and at the same t ime advancing Christianity. In 772 he began a
thirty-year war with the determi ned Saxons, after the successful opening
of Charlemagne was called to the assi stance of Pope Hadrian I. against
Desiderius, King of the Lombards. Charlemagn e marched two armies over the
Alps and conquered Lombardy in 774; returned and beat the Saxons again and
hastened into Spain, in 778, to help the Arabian ru lers of that country
against the Osman Caliph of Cordova. It was in this war t hat Roland, the
hero of romance, fell in the pass of Roncesvalles.

In 799 the Romans revolted against Pope Leo III., and were again brought
into subjec tion by Charlemagne. In return, while he was praying on the
steps of St. Peter 's Church, he was crowned by Leo with the iron crown of
the Western Empire, su ccessor of the Roman Caesars, unexpectedly to him,
as he pretended, on Christm as Day, 800, amidst the popular acclamations,
"Long life and victory to Charle s Augustus, crowned by God, great and
pacific Emperor of the Romans!"

The extensive domain of Charlemagne was rendered secure only by ceaseless
vigilan ce and warfare. The short intervals of peace which ere allowed him,
he employe d in endeavoring to educate and civilize his peop

He is someti mes regarded as the founder of the HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE. In 768 he and his brother Carloman inherited the Frankish kingdom (most of present-day France and a part of western Germany) from their father PEPIN THE SHORT. The entire kingdom pass ed to Charlemagne when Carloman died in 771. He inherited great wealth and a st rong military organization from his father and brother. He used these assets to double the territory under Carolingian control. In 772 he opened his offensive against the SAXONS, and for more than three decades he pursued a ruthless poli cy aimed at subjugating them and converting them to Christianity. Almost every year Charlemagne attacked one or another region of Saxon territory. --4,500 Sax ons were executed on a single day in 782--and deportations were used to discour age the stubborn. The Saxons proved to be a far more difficult enemy than any o f the other peoples subjugated by Charlemagne. For example, the LOMBARDS were c onquered in a single extended campaign 773-74), after which Charlemagne assumed the title "king of the Lombards." In 788 he absorbed the duchy of Bavaria, and soon thereafter he launched an offensive against the AVAR empire. The Avars su ccumbed within a decade, yielding Charlemagne a vast hoard of gold and silver. After one disastrous campaign (778) against the Muslims in Spain, Charlemagne l eft the southwestern front to his son Louis, (later Emperor LOUIS I) who, with the help of local Christian rulers, conquered Barcelona in 801 and controlled m uch of Catalonia by 814. On Christmas Day, 800, Charlemagne accepted the title of emperor and was crowned by Pope LEO III. For several years after he regarded the imperial title of being of little value. Moreover, he intended to divide h is lands and titles among his sons, as was the Frankish custom. Louis I 'The Pious', Emperor Of The Holy Roman Empire i n 814
succeeded his father Charlemagne. In 817, he arranged for the
successio n after his death by dividing the empire among his
three sons. After his first wife died, Louis married again, and
a
fourth son, Charles, was born. Louis r edivided his empire in
829 in order to give Charles a share. The older sons re sented
the new division and revolted. Louis was removed from the
throne in 83 3, but was restored the next year. The bitter
struggle
between his sons conti nued until Louis died.

Called The Pious (778-840), Holy Roman emperor (814-40), king of France (814-40 ), king of Germany (814-40), and king of Aquitaine (781-840). He was the son of Charlemagne, king of the Franks. In 817 Louis made plans providing for the pos thumous division of the Carolingian Empire among his three surviving sons, Loth air I, Holy Roman emperor, Louis II, king of Germany, and Charles II, Holy Roma n emperor. His reign, however, was troubled by quarrels with his sons, who were dissatisfied with his arrangements for the succession. Louis was physically st rong but was easily influenced and was unequal to administering the large empir e that he inherited from his father.

In 781, at age 2, Louis I, "Le Pieux", was crowned and anointed King of Aquitaine by Pope Hadrian I, at the same time as his older brother Pepin was made King of Italy. Louis, whose twin brother ha d died at birth, was the third of Charlemagne's sons by his wife Hildegard. The Diviso Regni of 806indicates that Louis was to have Aquitaine as an independen t kingdom upon his father's death. Aquitaine was in effect a March; for much of Louis' reign as sub-king he and his officials were occupied in quelling Gascon revolts and launching offensives into Spain. Unrest had never completely died out in the Pyrenees since the annexation of Aquitaine in 768, and more especial ly after the disastrous ambush of the Frankish vanguard in Roncesvalles in 778. In about 788, Chorso, Duke of Toulouse was captured by a Gascon named Adelric, and then released after being forced to swear an oath of allegiance to the Gas con or Basque leader. In 793, the Sarracens invaded Septimania, burned the subu rbs of Narbonne and marched on Carcassonne, but in 795 Bahlul-ben-Machluc sued with Louis for peace. In 800, he successfully laid siege to Barcelona and subse quently captured Tortosa, Huesca and Pamplona and formed links with the Kingdom of the Asturias. Baptized: on 15 Apr 781; On 15 April 781, Louis was baptized by Pope Hadrian I in Rome. The next day, Easter Sunday, he was confirmed in his title of King of Aquitaine. Married in 794: Ermengarde d'Esbay, daughter of En gueran=Ingram, Count d'Esbay.

Note - between 800 and 837: Louis I establishe d monasteries in Nouaille (a cell of St. Hilaire of Poitiers), Gellone and St. Martin-de-Tours.

After the death of his brothers Pepin and Charles in 810 an d 811 respectively, Louis was crowned at Aachen on 13 September 813, Emperor an d heir to all of Charlemagne's lands, by Charlemagne himself without any assist ance nor even the presence of the Pope. All sources, Frankish as well as papal, refer to Louis as emperor from then on. Charlemagne died 5 months later. All of Louis' sisters were required to quit the palace and retire to their own esta tes. His cousins, the offsprings of Bernard (Pepin III's half brother) were ex hiled: Louis forced Count Wala to become a monk at Corbie; Adalhard was exhiled to Noirmoutier to be held there in custody by the Abbot; Bernhard returned to Lerin and Gundrada had to retreat to St. Radegund's convent of Sainte Croix in Poitiers. Only Theodrada was left unmolested as abbess of Notre Dame at Soisson s. Louis I was also known as Louis, "Le Pieux". On 27 February 814, upon learni ng of the death of his father, and at the age of 36 years, he left Doue-la-Font aine, in Anjou, to go to Aix-la-Chapelle.

This new emperor, enterred this ca pital, and poised himself in front of the tomb of Charlemagne. So oversome with grief, his forehead touched the stone floor of the church. Hence the name "Le Pieux". Since he was kind, relative to his times, he was also known as "Le Debo nnaire". For himself, he preferred to adopt the title "by divine Providence, Em peror Augustus". When Pope Leo died in May of 816, Stephen IV was elected Pope, and crowned Louis the Emperor on Sunday 5 October by placing a crown on his he ad during mass at Rheims. Louis was crowned King of Aquitaine (subkingdom to Franks) in 781 to
slow rebellion after Charlemagne's defeat in Spain by the Sa racen Moslems.
In 793, the Saracens invaded Aquitaine under their Caliph His ham. In 795 the
Spanish march was created with William as its Count. The nex t year, King
Louis and Count William defeated the Saracens and secured the Fr ankish
held areas of NE Spain. They continued to fight the Saracens until 81 3, when
all of Navarre was conquered by William and Louis.

In 806 Charlema gne wrote in his will that his sons Louis, Charles (co-King
of the Franks), a nd Pepin (King of Italy) would divide the Empire on his death.
Pepin died in 8 10 and Charles followed in 811. In 813 Byzantine nobles came
to Charlemagne to recognize him as Emperor (he was 69 years old), and so he
ordered Louis to come from Aquitaine to be crowned co-Emperor and be
designated as his successo r. When Charlemagne died in 814, Louis suc-
ceeded to all thrones.

Louis t he Pious became Frankish Emperor in 814 with no rivals to the throne.
He had t hree sons, Lothar, Pepin and Louis. In 817, Lothar was made co-
Emperor with his father and King of Italy to replace Bernard, Pepin made

Born: in 714 in Austrasia, son of Charles Martel and Rotrude=Chrotrud, Duchesse d'Austrasie ). Married circa 740: Berthe=Bertrada de Laon, daughter of Charibert, Count de Laon and Bertrade N? ;

Berthe was for may years, at least since 740, the concubine of Pepin III. In 749 she convince d him to marry her. Note - between 742 and 753: Pepin III was baptized by the t hen future Saint Willibrod, famous apostle of Frisia and was brought up at the Monastery of Saint-Denis. He would protect the bishops.

Upon the death of hi s father, Charles Martel in Quierzy-sur-Oise on 22 October 741, Pepin III recei ved Neustria, Burgundy and the Provence. The next year, Pepin "Le Bref", whose surname was derived in the 9th. century because of his size, joined his older b rother, Carloman in military operations in Aquitaine. They ravaged the region o f Bourges and set fire to the Castle of Loches. By Autumn, they had pushed beyo nd the Rhine, defeated Duke Odilon of Bavaria and forcing the Allemanians to su bmit. In the year 743, they re-establish a Merovingian King by taking Childeric III from an abbey, purportedly one of the sons of Childeric II. In 744, Hunaud , son of Eudes, Duke of Aquitaine, undertakes his campaign in Allemania, crosse s the Loire and destroys Chartres, burning its cathedral. The next year, he was forced by Carloman and Pepin III to retire at the Monastery of the Ile de Re. Hunaud's son Waifre succeeds him. Pepin decides to free Grifon, his half-brothe r, and to thank him, Grifon joins a rebellion against Pepin, refusing Pepin's o ffer of a dozen Neustrian countships. In 749, Pepin III forces the Allemanians in rebellion to submit as well as the Bavarians. Grifon escapes but dies that y ear on his way to seek the help Waifre, Duke of Aquitaine, near Saint-Jean-de-M aurienne. The Merovingian dynasty comes to an end in November of 751 when Pepin III receives the Holy Oil from Boniface, Bishop of Soissons, thus becoming Kin g. His wife becomes Queen of the Francs the same day. Childeric III and his son Thierry both are shaven and they are sent to the Monastery of Saint-Berton, ne ar Arras.

Berthe was for may years, at least since 740, the concubine of Pepin III. In 749 she convinced him to marry her. Note - between 742 and 753: Pepin III was baptized by the then future Saint Willibrod, famous apostle of Frisia a nd was brought up at the Monastery of Saint-Denis. He would protect the bishops .

Upon the death of his father, Charles Martel in Quierzy-sur-Oise on 22 Oct ober 741, Pepin III received Neustria, Burgundy and the Provence. The next year , Pepin "Le Bref", whose surname was derived in the 9th. century because of his size, joined his older brother, Carloman in military operations in Aquitaine. They ravaged the region of Bourges and set fire to the Castle of Loches. By Aut umn, they had pushed beyond the Rhine, defeated Duke Odilon of Bavaria and forc ing the Allemanians to submit. In the year 743, they re-establish a Merovingian King by taking Childeric III from an abbey, purportedly one of the sons of Chi lderic II. Originally the Mayor of the Palace for Ki ng Childeric III. IN 751 an
assembly of nobles in Soissons elected him king of the Franks. In 754 Pope
Stephan II crowned Pepin, King of France at the abbey of St. Denis,
outside of Paris. He supported the Church and rescued the papac y from the
Lombard Kings giving the Pope central Italy in the Donation of Pepi n in
756.

27. Pepin (Pippin) II., the Short, King of France from 752 to 768 , born in
714, died in 768. He had much to do; the Saxons, Bavarians, and Arab s were
all menacing or revolting, and he had to rush from one part of the king dom
to the other, defending its frontiers, and getting no help from the
"stup id sluggard king," at Paris. At last, impatient of the farce, he sent
this que stion to the Pope: "Who is king, he who governs or he who wears
the crown?" "H e who governs, of course," answered the Pope. "That is
myself," said the littl e man with a great will; "so the sluggards shall go
to sleep forever," and he sent the last of them, Childeric III., the last
of the Merovingians, into a mo nastery. Then the nobles put their shields
together, and the little man was se ated on a chair, on their shields, and
with him thus, "shouting and raising th eir shields as high as they could,
they marched three times, round the parliam ent, and then, by St. Boniface,
he was anointed Archbishop of Metz, A.D. 752. Pepin did not forget that he
owed a debt of gratitude to the Pope for the answ er he had given to his
question, and when, shortly after, the Pope sent to com plain of the
trouble occasioned by the Lombards, Pepin crossed the Alps, punis hed the
Lombards, took from them all the territory about Rome and gave it to t he
Pope "to belong to him and to the bishops of Rome forever. That was the
be ginning of the Papal sovereignty. The States of the Church, as they were
calle d, remained under the sovereignty of the Popes until 1871." Pepin le
Bref, Kin g of France, died in 768. He married Bertha (Bertrada) of Laon.
