Robert de Beaumont, a c ompanion in arms of William I (The Conqueror) at Hastings was granted after the Conquest much land in the Midlands of England, but most of it was in Warwicksh ire rather than Leicestershire. Indeed his younger brother became Earl of Warw ick. Robert also held territory in Normandy and is usually referred to as Coun t of Meulan. He was a leading political figure in the reigns of William II and Henry I and on the death of one Ives de Grandmesnil in the First Crusade, the funds for campaigning in which Ives had raised from Robert on the security of h is estates, [Robert] came into full possession of them, including a sizeable pa rt of Leicester. The rest of the town was granted him by Henry I and it is pos sible that he became Earl of Leicester. His son, another Robert, certainly cal led himself Earl of Leicester.

As far as is known, neither Waleran nor Robert
used a surname, and when their sons did, they called themselves
respectively by the names de M eulan and de Breteuil. Nonetheless we
call the twins and their cousins the Bea umonts. It is a practice I have
traced back as far as the eighteenth century, a quite respectable
antiquity. As far as I know the French Jean-Antoine Levrie r was the first
to employ the practice in his histo rical collections towards a history of
the Vexin. As will be seen, the twins and their connections frequ ently
acted as one, and it would now be too confus ing to spurn a practice so
obviously necessary and so universally used.
Cou nt Roberts heirs, the twins Waleran and Robert, were in their
fourteenth yea r when he died. The king took swift action to secure their
lands. There could be no question of wardship in the summer of 1118, for
King Henry was contend ing with a wave of minor rebel lions and major
incursions that followed the al liance of Louis VI of France a nd William
Clito in 1116. The monk Orderic Vita lis was no Clausewitz, but he
understood that the four great Beaumont castles of Pont Audemer,
Beaumont, Br ionne and Vatteville were a serious hindrance t o any
insurrection in Central Normandy. King Henry therefore kept the twins a t
court, and their lands to hi mself.
The kings arrangements for administer ing the Beaumont honors during
t he twins minority were unusual and perhaps u nprecedented. Their
management wa s delegated to a council of four, but the evidence
suggests that the lands of the late count of Meulan were regarded as in
the kings hands between 1118 and 1120, and whatever profits the four
councillors made on their own account, th eir responsibility was
ultimately t o the king. The two senior members of the council were
curiales. The kings choice of Earl William of Warenne and Nigel
d'Aubigny must have come from hi s need to have men close to him involved
in t he Beaumont estate management, b ut it also shows a certain
sensitivity. Willi am, Earl of Warenne, had married the twins mother,
Elizabeth of Vermandois, so on after she was widowed, givi ng some
substance to Henry of Huntingdons court gossip about her affair and
elopement with an earl before her husbands death. Nigel d'Aubigny had
some connection with the dead count, whose tenant he had become for lands
