Thomas was a shipbuilder and a Puritan who left England with other pilgrims in 1637 during Hampden's resistance to the arbitrary exactions of Charles I. At least two of the Morris family had been killed curing the reign of "Bloody Queen Mary" for refusing to give up their Protestant faith. The Morris nme may also be found during the parliamentary struggles with Charles and as soldiers under Cromwell. Thomas arrived in Boston on the ship "Hector" on June 26, 1637. The following spring, he took sail again with another group of Londoners and went to Quinnipiac (New Haven) on March 30, 1638. They arrived in mid-April, and he purchaed a tract of land nearby which ws heavily foreted. His intent was to use the trees for masts and spars in his ship building activity. There are indications that this went very well, and the Thoma died a wealthy man. The forested area was originally called East Haven, and Morris Cove. It is now known as Morristown, Connecticut. OBITUARY:
Bessie H. Kinder, 87, of Rockford, died Saturday, April 20, 1991 in her residence. She was born on November 3, 1903, in mercer County, a daughter of Frank and Effie (Latimer) Morrison. On June 26, 1949, she married George Kinder Jr. and he died on August 4, 1973. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Martha) Baltzell of Rockford; a sister, Mrs. Carl (Mable) Brandt of Rockford: five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preeded in death by two sisters. Private funeral services were held Tuesday in the Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home in Rockford. Burial was iin Riverside Cemetery.
