Earl of Mercia: 1023. Lord of the town of Coventry.

In 1040, he imposed heavy taxes on his people, and his wife begged him to relent. He would agree to her request to lower taxes, if she would riden aked through the streets of Coventry. The townspeople all agreed not to look,si nce she was helping them. A "peeping Tom" did take a look; however, Lady Godiva was covered with her long flowing mane of hair. (Internet)

He took partin ap unitive raid sent by Hardicanute against Worcester in 1041, and in the despoili ng of Queen Emma at Winchester in 1043.
Coventry owed its early fame tothe fou ndation of a Benedictine monastery there by Leofric, earl of Mercia, and his wi fe Godgifu (famous in legend as Lady Godiva) in 1043.

He supported Edward th e Confessor against Earl Godwin in 1051. In 1056 he helped to make a treaty wi th Griffith of Wales.

He died 31 August or 30 September.
