Athelstan OF WESSEX7,21 was born in 895. Acceded 924-939.

Athelstan
Edward's heir Athelstan (reigned 925-39) was als o a distinguished and audacious soldier who pushed the boundaries of the kingdo m to their furthest extent yet. In 927-8, Athelstan took York from the Danes; h e forced the submission of king Constantine of Scotland and of the northern kin gs; all five Welsh kings agreed to pay a huge annual tribute (reportedly includ ing 25,000 oxen), and Athelstan eliminated opposition in Cornwall. The battle o f Brunanburh in 937, in which Athelstan led a force drawn from Britain and defe ated an invasion by the king of Scotland in alliance with the Welsh and Danes f rom Dublin, earned him recognition by lesser kings in Britain.
Athelstan's la w codes strengthened royal control over his large kingdom; currency was regulat ed to control silver's weight and to penalise fraudsters. Buying and selling wa s mostly confined to the burhs, encouraging town life; areas of settlement in t he midlands and Danish towns were consolidated into shires. Overseas, Athelstan built alliances by marrying four of his half-sisters to various rulers in west ern Europe. He also had extensive cultural and religious contacts; as an enthus iastic and discriminating collector of works of art and religious relics, he ga ve away much of his collection to his followers and to churches and bishops in order to retain their support. Athelstan died at the height of his power and wa s buried at Malmesbury; a church charter of 934 described him as 'King of the E nglish, elevated by the right hand of the Almighty ... to the Throne of the who le Kingdom of Britain'.

Little is known about the reigns of childless Athel stan's immediate successors. His half brother Edmund successfully suppressed re bellions by the Mercian Danes, but he was murdered at a feast in his own hall, at the age of 25 in 946, after seven years on the throne. Edmund's brother Edre d (reigned 946-55) also dealt with trouble from Danes in the north; he brought up Edmund's sons as his heirs. The elder son Edwy was crowned by Oda, Archbisho p of Canterbury, in 956 at Kingston-on-Thames (sited on the Wessex/Mercia borde r, and on the frontier between Alfred's kingdom and the Danelaw, this was where most recorded West Saxon consecrations took place). Aged 13 at his succession, Edwy became entangled in court factions, and Mercia and Northumbria broke away in rebellion. Edwy died before he was 20. http://www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/cgi-bin/gedlkup/n=royal?royal01964 th e youngest son of Athelwulf Reigned 871-899. He preventedthe Danish conquest o f England, defeating them at Edington(878)after a campaign of guerrila warfare. After his victory heallowed the Danes to keep their conquests in Mercia nd Eas tAnglia provided that Guthrum, their King, was converted toChristianity. Alfred built a navy of Warships to defend thesouth coast against further Danish invas ions (885-86 ;892-96)and protected Wessex with a chain of fortifications. He to okLondon (886), this gaining control of all England except theDanish areas.

CORONATION NOTES There is no record of Alfred's coronation andit is quite possi ble that there was no formal ceremony becauseWessex was i the midst of the Dani sh threat. It wouldnevertheless be surprising for there to be no ordinationcer emony and this probably happened soon after Athelred'sfuneral at Wimborne in la te April or early May 871, but it isnot known who officiated. The archbishop of Canterbury at thedate was Athelred. Parents: Aethelwulf Of WESSEX.

Spouse: Queen Of Ethelswida ENGLAND. Alfred Of England OF WEST SAXON and Queen Of Ethelswida ENGLAND were married in 868 in Winchester, England.2670,2671 WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL, WINCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE Winchester Cathedralis the second l ongest in Europ after St. Peter's in Rome, a factone would readily dispute base d on external assessment alone, asthe building somhow fails to crate an impress ion of greatlength. As soon as one enters the soaring, fourteenth-century.Perp endicular nave, however, such doubts are dispelled and thechurch seems to stret ch to infinity beyond the choir screen, certainly appearing even longer than its actual 556 feet. Workon the present church began in 1079 under the direction o fBishop Walkelin to replace the huge Saxon foundation of OldMinster that housed the relics of St. Swithun, a ninth-centurybishop whose name is forever associa ted with wet Englishsummers. A shrine was eventually erected to Swithun in the newchurch, and became an important place of pilgrimage; for a time, ony Thomas a Becket's shrine in Canterbury was more visited.Romanesque architecture from t hat firest phase of reconstructionsurvives intact in both north and south trans epts and also inthe crypt, which is no prone to flooding in winter. Problemswi th Winchester's raised water table had seriously threatenedthe cathedral's very survival at the turn of the century when itwas discovered that the original ti mber foundations weredisintegrating and causing strutural instability. Thecath edral's saviour is generally acknowledged as William Walker,a deep-sea diver wh o spent five years working in up to 20 feetof water underpinning the walls by r eplacing rotten timbers andlayers of soggy peat with countless bags of dement. Winchesterwas once capital of Wessex and then of all England during thereign of Alfred the Great, a status it retained until well afterthe Norman Conquest whe n it was gradually eclipsed by London. One of the most lavish royal events to ha ve taken place in thecathedral was the post-Dissolution wedding of Mary Tudor t oPhilip of Spain in 1554, ironically the same person who, as Kingof Spain, woul d later be sending his Armada to interrupt SirFrancis Drake's game of bowlsin P lymouth. Several of the Saxonkings who were rowned and buried here are reprsent ed by theircoloufully inscribed mortuary chests. These line the presytery, whic h is dominated by the massive, fifteenth-century stonescreen whose many delicat ely carved niches are filled with quitesuperbe modern replicas of the original saints' statues thatwere desecrated and smashed during the Reformation. TheWinc hester's windows were once adorned by sumptuous displays ofpainted glass is evi dent from those fragments that survived thevandalism inflicted ont he church by Cromwell's Parliamentariantroops during the Civil War. The confusing, coloure d patchworkof the nave's west window was created from shards and segmentsrescue d from the shattered original.
