_______________________________________________________
In 1935, a number of the descendants of Valentin & Mary Baab Ports put together a family history. In 1952 this was updated.

It is believed that the Portz family (spelled Porz in Germany) were French Hugenots who were forced from France to the Alsace Loraine area. In 1677 Maximilian Portz was living in the town of Marienthal, Germany (just west of Speyer). The name appears in the church records first in 1695. In the U.S. Army he was also called Portes.

He enlistment papers are dated August 15, 1862 and he signs up for Company 'G' of the 102nd OVI (Captian Harpster's Company). His occupation is listed as shoemaker, birthplace, Tuscarawas Ohio and he signs up in Millersburg, Ohio A $25.00 bounty is paid to him. There is mention of some sick time October 25, 1862 in Lebanon, Ky. The first ten months of duty have no other notations, in May & July, 1863 he is "detailed repairing railroad". In Jan. & Feb., 1864 he is detailed as Regement cobbler. On June 30, 1865 he is mustered out of service in Nashville, Tenn.

3-14-1969 Charles daughter, Chloe, wrote to H A Heiser. She reported that Charles changed the spelling of his name from Portz to Ports when he entered the army in the Civil War. Chloe said that Char. did not like his step father and he may have run away to join the army. He was discharged from the army on June 13, 1865 in Nashville, TN. The discharge paper indicates that he entered the army as a shoemaker. After the war Chas. and his brother Christian opened a cobbler shop in Bloomfield (Clark) Ohio. Chloe also reported that when Chas. daughter, Edna married Jesse Daugherty he would have nothing to do with her as Jesse was known as a drinking man.

Chas. granddaughter, Ruth Ellen recalls that when her father, Hugh Ports was in his 50's he would spit out his chewing tobacco before visiting his father to avoid a family scene.

Charles married Elizabeth Myers by the Rev. O. Bagely...I saw his picture at the Methodist library at Baldwin Wallace about 1970.

The photo album from Charles and Nancy include one if the Rev.W.P. Gardner. He was the minister of the Millersburg First Methodist and wrote to the guradians of Nancy Ellen Elliott re her expenses. he has something to do with Badwin U. 1862-68. The Elliott photo album AH has includes pictures of Charley; Willie and B.H. Brooks, these would be the children of his sister Katherine.

When Charles father died his mother shortly married Andrew Ports the brother of Valentin. Andrew accumulated more land and had as much as 240 acres including the land occupied by the Renner Church in Tuscaraus County.

Charles was in Company 'G' 102nd OVI. He was discharged June 30 , 1865 at Nashville, Tenn. The 102nd was formed of men from Richland, Holmes, Ashland & Wayne Counties. It seems that Charles has left Tuscarawas County by the time he joined the army. They elected officers July 15, 1862. In looking at the roster of names in Company 'G' there are a number of names that may come from Mechanic Township, Holmes County; these include, Charles Ling, John Casey, Thomas Chapman. There is a book titled,"Biographical Records of Tuscarawas County Civil War Veterans and it does not include Chas. Ports.

He made a will in Shreve, Ohio April 25, 1930..or to and Effie Troutman. In the 1880 census of Clark Twp, Coshocton County, Charles describes himself as a farmer. In the 1870 census he called himself a shoemaker. In the 1880 census the family includes Laura Ling age 27. Laura is probably the granddaughter of Eleanor Elliott Ling and Henry Ling. There is some reason to think that Eleanor Elliott Ling was a sister to Blacksmith George Elliott. This would make Laura Ling and Charles' first wife, Nancy Ellen Elliott second cousins.

January '94 Ruth Ellen Ports Heiser was muzing about her grandfather and claimed that he did not seem to work. He keep some bees and raced horses. She thinks that he declined a Civil War pension.
The 1900 census of Wayne County, Plain Twp has Chas Ports as family #8. Listed with him is wife Jessie, children, Hugh, May, John E., Charles O., Chloe E., Mildred and stepson Ralph Redick born May 1884.
The obituary in the Wooster daily Record reads as follows with errors;
Charles Ports, Horseman
Dies Near Millbrook
Charles Ports, 87 years old one of Wanye county's well known horsemen for many years, died Saturday near Millbrook on the Wooster- morning about 8 o'clock in his home Shreve road.
The deceased is survived by two sons and two daughters, Earl, Otto, Chloe and Mildred.
The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the McIntire funeral home in Wooster with Rev. Christian of the Shreve Presbyterian church, officiating. Tidball & Morgan of Shreve are in charge of arrangements.
______________________________________________________________

In the Ports-Elliott photo has an Elmira Elliott - William & Frances Duncan had an Elmira bor in 1849 -- she would be close to Ellen Elliot Ports age. I also noted that David Elliott married Elmire H. Hout in Coshocton County November 30, 1854 -- there may be a spelling error as I have Almira Howe married to David E.
