She was a significant warrior in her own right. Her longdefence of Pain's Castle when it wasbeseiged by the Welsh earned it the name "Matilda's Castle". The local people saw her as a supernatural character. She was said to have buil t Hay Castle single-handed in one night, carrying the stonesin her apron. When o ne fell out andlodged inher slipper she picked it out andflung it to land in St . Meilig's churchyard, 3 milesaway across the River Wyeat Llowes. The 9-foot-hig h standing stone can still beseen inside the church. The final fall of her husba nd mayowe a lot to her hastyreply toKing John when he requested her sonWilliam asa hostage in 1208. She refused onthe groundsthat John hadmurdered his nephew Arthur whom he should have protected. The dispute between John and the de Braos es led to Maud dying of starvationin the King's castle atWindsor along withher son. [large-G675.FTW] In "A ncestral Roots" I find that Maud de St. Valerie, wife of William de Braiose (17 7-6), was killed by King John by being walled up with her young son William in her castle in 1210. Does anyone know the story behind her death? Essentiall y, in about 1206-7 John, for reasons unknown, started to persecute William de B riouze and others. Over the next several years things went from bad to worse. I n 1208, John demanded hostages from William and Matilda (Maud) apparently said that she wouldn't deliver up her sons to John as he had murdered his nephew Art hur. After this things got really bad and William and his family were forced to flee to Ulster (William was Lord of Limerick). In spring 1210 John prepared an expedition to Ireland and Matilda fled with her sons to Scotland (William was in Wales at this time). Matilda and the children were captured by a Scots lord and handed over to John. Matilda and the eldest son (William IV) were imprisone d, and were never seen again. The common report, recorded in several monastic annals, was that they had been starved to death. For a fuller version of thi s I would suggest you read : King John by W.L.
