The first proven link with the Savage dynasty starts in the 16th century wi th a Thomas Savage who was recorded as a Yeoman of Newbold Pacy in Warwickshire (yeoman was a middle class farmer who owned his own land). Thomas's son John S avage marrieda Joan Smith in Moreton Morrell in 1543. Some time later he moved to Bishops Tachebrook Warwickshire, where he died in 1594. His daughter Margare t married William Murcott.
The Savage family were a higher social than the Mur cotts, but both were significant landholders in Warwickshire. Nearby in Worcest ershire were another branch of the Savages. This family lived in Elmley Castle Worcestershire, the manor of Elmleywas given to Christopher Savage by King Henr y VIII in 1545 (demolished in 1960).

The name of SAVAGE is believed to have been originally a nickname derive d from the wild or savage nature of its first bearer. It is found on ancient re cords in the various spellings of Salvage, Sauvage, Sawage, Savidge, Savadge, a nd Savage,.ofwhich the last is the most generally accepted form today, and was frequently found with the prefix le, meaning "the".

I, John Savage of Mi ddletown, do make this my last will and testatment: I give unto my wife my now dwelling house and barn and the land adjoining, with pasture; also give her 4 1 -2 acres of land lying on the near Neck, on the west side of sd.Neck; also I gi ve to my wife 1-3 part of my moveable estate within doors, she taking that that suits her best; also I give her two cows, six sheep and four swine; this I giv e her during her natural life. I give unto my son Thomas the house he nowlives in, to be his at my decease, and my now dwelling house and barn and the land ad joining to them (after his mother's decease), so far as the southernmost fence and west of the fence that divides the pasture from the upland and orchard; als o Igive him a one-half of my pasture at home, his half to be on the north side of sd. pasture next the highway, he allowing his brother William a passway to g o through his part of sd. lott to cart or drive creatures, if need be; also I g ive him the1-2 of my long meadow and half of my long meadow swamp and half of m y upland on the east side of the Neck, yt I gave his mother during her natural life, he is to have it after his mother's decease; also I give him the 1-2 of m y lott at Sider Hill,to be equally divided between him and his brother William after my decease; also I give to my son Thomas 1-2 of my land in the Boggy Mead ow and Further Neck and Round Meadow, half of each parcell; also I give him the 1-2 of my land in thenorthwest quarter, to be equally divided between him and his brother William after my decease; all this I give to my son Thomas and his heirs, he paying to his sisters the sum or sums after specified in this will. I give to my son William thehomelott where his house now stands; also I give him the 1-2 of my pasture at home, south part of it; also give him the other half of the several parcells of land described as given to Thomas. And further, I gi ve to my two sons Thomas and Williamall my carpenter tools and all my tool tack ling and husbandry tools. I give to my five daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Rachel and Marcey, all my household goods, 2-3 of sd. goods at my decease and t he other third after my wife's decease; andalso all my cattle, sheep and swine, excepting only those that I have given to my wife. And what the household good s and stock doth fall short of 60 pounds for each daughter, my will is that my two sons Thomas and William shall make up to theirfive sisters above named the sum of 60 pounds to each sister with what they have already received, in consid eration of their having all my land. And further, my will is that my two sons T homas and William shall have all my lands that are notparticularly disposed of in this will, both divided and undivided, to be equally divided between them. A nd further, my will is that my two sons Thomas and William pay to their sisters 25 pounds a year after my decease, until they have paid them infull of what I have given my daughters in this my will.
