Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Segrave, pp.6 033-605). From 1258 he provided
various military services to King Henry III. In 1264 he was at the siege of
Rochester with Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Glouc ester and Henry de Hastings.
That same year he commanded the Londoners at the Battle of Lewes. The
Londoners received the first attack by Prince Edward and were routed. In 1265
he was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Ever sham. His loyalty to
King Henry waivered during the last years of the reign. King Edward I
summoned Sir Nicholas to serve in Wales in 1276, 1277, 1282, & 1283. He went
to Ireland 1284/5. He was in various commissions 1290-4. In 1 291-2 he was
staying in Scotland on The King's service. Just months before hi s death in
1295, he was summoned to Parliament, making him the 1st Baron Segra ve.
-----------------------

from www: the Genealogy of Homer Beers James:
4. Nicholas de Segrave, who, in the 43rd year of King Henry II., attended that
monarch into France, but soon after espoused the cause of the barons, and
bec ame one of their most active leaders. In the 47th year of King Henry III.'s
re ign, he was among those who appeared openly in arms, and fortified
Northampton , for which proceeding, his lands were seized by the crown. Upon the
subsequen t fall of Northampton to the royalists, Nicholas de Segrave fled to
London, wh ere the citizens having raised a large army for the barons, made him
their gen eral. At the head of this force, he marched with Gilbert de Clare, and
Henry d e Hastings, to the siege of Rochester, and thence to Lewes, at which
place, th e celebrated battle, so disastrous to the king, commenced, by a charge
made by Segrave, at the head of the Londoners; in this, however, he was
defeated by P rince Edward, who, flushed with success, pursued his advantage too
far, and th us mainly contributed to the defeat which the royal arms sustained.
The issue of this battle is well known. The king, Prince Edward, and the chief
of their adherents became prisoners to the rebels, who followed up their
triumph, by im mediately summoning a parliament in the king's name, to which
Nicholas de Segr ave was summoned as Baron Segrave, on December 24, 1264. But
the tide soon ebb ing, he was among the defeated at Evesham, where he was
wounded and made priso ner. He was, however, admitted to the benefit of the
Dictum de Kenilworth, and obtained a full pardon, with restoration of his
lands, which had been seized. In four years afterwards, he attended Prince
Edward to the Holy Land, and whe n that prince ascended the throne, he appears
to have enjoyed a large share of royal favor. In the 4th year of Edward's
reign, he was with the king in a cam paign against the Welsh, and was
subsequently employed in Scotland and Ireland , having had a second summons to
parliament, June 25, 1295. He married Maud de Lucy. Parents: Lord Gilbert De SEGRAVE and Annabilia Or Anabell DE CHAUCOMBE.
