One of the things that makes this a difficult question to
discuss is
that the question " Was Ragnar Lothbrok historical?" is itself
somewhat ambiguous. Thus, before the question can be

opposite extremes, a skeptic could ask whether or not

order for Ragnar Lothbrok to be considered as historical, there
should
be a historically documented person of that name who actually
performed a sig nificant number of the deeds attributed to the
legendary Ragnar Lothbrok. I t hink these are reasonable
criteria, and
the remainder of this discussion is based on these principles.
Now,
to answer the question: No, Ragnar Lothbrok does not appear to
be a
historical figure, based on the above criteria. I wi ll give
some
comments as to why I have this opinion, and then mention some
r eading
material for those who want more.

RAGNAR

The contemporary histori cal records of the ninth century (when
Ragnar
Lothbrok supposedly lived) show only one Viking of the correct
name, a
Viking named "Reginheri" (a Latin for m equivalent to the name
Ragnar)
in France WHO DIED IN THE YEAR 845, accordin g to the
contemporary
Frankish annals. The emphasized words in the previous sentence
are
often conveninetly overlooked by those who wish to use
Reginher i as a
historical prototype for Ragnar Lothbrok. Since Reginheri died
in
Fr ance in the year 845, he cannot have participated in the
later
events which form the principal part of the legendary Ragnar
Lothbrok's exploits. In addit ion, there is no good evidence
that
Reginheri was the father of any of the in dividuals who later
came to
be regarded as sons of Ragnar Lothbrok. Thus, Re ginheri fails
to
satisfy the criterion mentioned above. No other historical
Norseman
named Ragnar is known for the appropriate time period.

LOTHBROK

No contemporary record gives this name, and it is significant
that
when the name finally does make it appearance in the records
200 years
later, it stan ds alone. (Ari, writing in the twelfth century,
was the
first known writer t o make Ragnar and Lothbrok the same
person.) The
name first appears (as "Lot hbroc") in "Gesta Normannorum
Ducum", by
William of Jumieges, writing about 1 070, in which Lothbroc is
called
he father of Bjorn Ironside. (A Viking name d Bjorn is verified
by the
contemporary chronicles, but without the nickname. ) Adam of
Bremen,
writing soon afterward, called Ivar the son of "Lodparchus ".

The celebrated and he roic warrior Ragnar, so called because he always wore in battle a pair of encha nted breeches, made of a bear skin with the hair outwards. King Reymer Lodbrok having invaded England in 794, was taken prisoner by Aella, King of Northumberl and, who put him to death in a most cruel manner, he being thrown into a pit ho le full of adders, which stung him to death. When news of his death reached Den mark his five valiant sons were furious. When being told that their father had said, "How the young cubs would rage when they learned of the old bear's fate," they vowed instant revenge. An expedition led by eight crowned heads invaded E ngland. In a battle at York the Anglo-Saxons were entirely routed and King Aell a was made prisoner and subjected to the most barbarous treatment. The sons of Lodbrok ordered an eagle to be cut on the fleshy part of his back, the ribs wer e severed from the spine and the heart and lungs extracted. After this victory Northumbria appears no longer as a Saxon kingdom. Ivor was made King of Northum bria and Danish merchants and people flocked to England. Bjorn, another brother , was made King of Sweden. Gotefrid became King of Jutland. Another son, Sigurd , called the Snake Eye, inherited the Danish crown.

He was a semi-legendary King.

He is said to possibly be the Ragnar who entered the Seine in 845 with 120 ships. Charles the Bald deployed his army on both sides of the river and Ragnar attacked and routed the smaller contingent and hung 111 prisoners on an island in full viewof the other Frankish force who offered no more resistance. Ragnar sailed into Paris and sacked it on Easter S unday. Charles the Bald paid him 7000 pounds of silver to depart in peace and t hus gained six years free of invasion.

Another story says in his old age he became jealous of his son's reknown as vikings and raided Northumberland and wa s captured by King Ella who threw him in a snake pit. As he was being bitten he sang his death song starting each stanza with "Downwe hewed them with our swor ds" and in his dying breath prophesized, "How piglets would grunt if they know the plight of the boar!"

His sons did avenge his death by capturing King El la, carved a "blood eagle" on his back, hacked out his ribs and pulled his lung s out spreading them across his back like wings.
