Notes for JONATHAN DUNHAM SINGLETARY:
JONATHAN SINGLETARY -son of RICHARD - was born Jan 17, 1640, probably in Newbury, Massachusetts. He married Mary Bloomfield, daughter of Thomas Bloomfield, about 1661. They settled in Haverhill and lived there until about 1665, when they moved with her father's family to Woodbridge, New Jersey. The deposition of Jonathan Singletary, aged about 23, dated 1662 against John Godfrey, accused of witchcraft, is printed in UpHam's "Salem Witchcraft," Vol. 1. In a legal document in 1702 this whole family is spoken of as, "Donham, alias Singletary." Notable First Settlers"). Presumably, it was because of all these troubles that Jonathan decided to move his family to New Jersey. What is not so easy to figure out is why he changed his name also.

He got into some court trouble with a John GODFREY when he was in his twenties. At one point in their disputes over land Jonathan even accused John of being a witch! Jonathan also had some run-ins with the Plymouth government. He was arrested for some sort of rebellion and was described in government records as being a "ranter" and "disseminating corrupt religious principles among his neighbors" (from Olive B. LEONARD's "First Settlers of Piscataway and Woodbridge: Dedication to Five His name-change was never a secret. All the records of him in New Jersey say either "Jonathan Donham, alias Singletary" or "Jonathan Singletary, alias Donham". He also changed his ways in New Jersey, and the same book above also says about him, "was a respected and reputable citizen... and commanded the esteem of his fellow townsmen."

Jonathan "DONHAM" SINGLETARY rebelled against Dutch government and was arrested in 1673. He built the first grist mill in 1670 on Papiac Creek near Woodland, NJ, owned 213 acres of land in Woodbridge, NJ, and was a representative to NJ State Assembly.

From Laws and courts of New Netherlands: Page 492: "on 7 Sept 1674 they had reported ... that one Jonathan Singletary refuses to obey their orders" N.J." IN the Plymnouth Colony Records, Court Orders, July 1683, vol 6 page 113-114: "...sentenced to be 'publickly whipt' and banished from the colony, in these words, 'whereas Jonathan Dunham, Alias Singletary..."

Jonathan Dunham apparently led two lives. He was a respected citizen of Woodbridge who held many important positions. However in 1677 he was called a "mad man" by the Council of War for Achter Colony, and in 1683 left his family in Woodbridge, went to Plymouth Colony, and took up with Mary Ross(e), described as a whore, who convinced him to kill John Irish's dog and set fire to his house. The two of them were whipped and banished from the Colony. He then returned to Woodbridge. Mary Ross(e) was supposed to go to her mother in Boston. She later showed up in Woodbridge, for on 2 Dec 1689, Jonathan Dunham and his wife deeded to Mary Ross a house in Woodbridge. It was at this time that Mary Ross began a relationship with James Seatown. On 12 Dec 1689 Seatown was given a deed of trust by Jonathan and Mary Dunham. The trust concerned Dunham's property on Canoo Hill, which Seatown was to hold for their sons, Jonathan, David, and Benjamin Dunham. The only connection between Seatown and Dunham was Mary Ross, their mutual mistress. Why Jonathan Dunham chose James Seatown as trustee for his sons is unknown. There were certainly more worthy men in the community he could have called upon including his brothers-in-law, John and Ezekiel Bloomfield. After Seatown's wife, Rebecca, divorced him for desertion and adultery, Mary Ross and James Seatown went to New York and Mary then reconveyed to Jonathan Dunham the house that he had previously deeded to her. What became of James Seatown and Mary Ross is unknown. Jonathan settled down after this and led a respectable life.
