NATHANIEL2 SINGLETARY (RICHARD1) was born October 28, 1644 in Newbury, MA, and died August 13, 1689 in By Indians. He married SARAH BELKNAP December 22, 1673 in Framingham, Middlesex, MA. She was born 1653 in Salisbury, Essex, MA.

Notes for NATHANIEL SINGLETARY:
Nathaniel Singletary, son of Richard, was born 28 Oct 1644. He married Sarah Belknap and settled in his native town Haverhill. He was evidently lame, as the record states that he was "dismissed from training for Lameness in 1662." An account of his death is given in Chase's History of Haverhill, p153, as follows, "On the 13th of August (1689) a small party of Indians made their appearance in the northerly part of the town and killed Daniel Bradford. They then went to the field of Nathaniel Singletary, near by, where he and his oldest son were at work. They approached in their slow and serpent-like manner until they came within a few rods, when they shot Singletary, who fell and died on the spot. His son attempted to escape, but was soon overtaken and made prisoner. The Indians then scalped Singletary and commenced a hasty retreat. Their prisoner soon eluded their vigilance and returned home on the same day to make glad the hearts of his afflicted relatives." The son Jonathan was about fourteen years old at this time. ((Should read "JOHN" vice JONATHAN. jrs))

Nathaniel Singletary and his wife Sarah Belknap had the following children, all born in Haverhill: 1. JOHN Singletary, b 7 May 1675; taken prisoner when his father was killed, but escaped; -m- Marry Greeley 17 Dec 1700 2. MARY Singletary, b 11 Mar 1676; -m- John Eastor, 25 Jun 1700 3. *****************Originally the Name was "Dunham" in Scotland*****************
These are also descendents of the "Denman", "Denham", "Donham" Lines, which is also of the "Debenham's" line!

Captain Bentony Eaton of the "Good Ship Charles", brought Sir Richard Dunham, over to VA. and gave him the "Singletary" name so as to conceal his idenity. He was a "Single" child and was always "Tarying" around. Thus the name:
***************************** "Singletary" *******************************************
Richard Dunham was supposedly "Kidnapped", by his fathers Maid Servant and given to the Captain to be taken to the new World so as his Uncle,
"Sir Graham Phillip" couldn't have him assinated for the throne when his father died. He was the only Heir left to inherit the "Dunham" Castle. It is now controlled by the "Phillips" to this day!
There are records of this on file in Scotland and England!

The Singletary family in the United States with few exceptions is descended from Richard Singletary who was born in Lincolnshire, England in abt. 1540.

The following is taken from, "The Ancestors and Descendents of John White and Sarah Elizabeth Green with allied Lines," by Anne White Strawn, Salisbury Printing Co., Salisbury, N.C.

The material covered below has been taken almost entirely from an old book, "Genealogy of the Singletary-Curtis Family," by Lou Singletary--Bedford, published in New York in 1907. The Title Page states that it was compiled from Massachusetts records found in the Astor and Lenox Libraries of New York City, from South Carolina records, from correspondence, and from personal knowledge. An original copy of this book is located in the New England Historic Genealogical Society Library in Boston, Massachusetts. The author of this volume is fortunate to have obtained a photostatic copy of the book. Unless otherwise specified, information and dates are from the Singletary-Curtis book, as information on the Singletary family is very scarce. However, some additional information on the earliest period was obtained from: "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, Mass.", Vol. I, David W. Hoyt, Prov. R.I. 1897. Reprented by Genealogical Pub. Co. Inc. Baltimore, MD, 1982. Copy located in New England Historic Genealogical Society library, 101 Newbury Street, Boston, Mass. 02116, and "Singletary Genealogy" from the W.H. Elandge manuscript Genealogical Collection, New England Historic Genealogical Society Library, address as above.

In the last quarter of the sixteenth century, there was living in England a family of title and large estates by the name of DUNHAM (so the tradition has it, but the Massachusetts records have it DONHAM). Of this family there were two branches. In case of the death of the last male of the elder branch, the title and estate would pass to the nearest male relative of the younger branch. It so happened that every male of the elder branch died except one small boy. One morning it was discovered that he was missing -- and that his nurse was missing also. Although a thorough search was made and bloodhounds were used in the search, neither he nor his nurse could be found. as the years passed, nothing further was heard from him. The heir of the younger branch of the family instituted a law suit to obtain the property; whether or not he obtained the property in the absence of the real heir is not clear.

Many years after this happened, the child's nurse lay on her death bed and made an affidavit that she had been employed to destroy the child. She had found that she could not do this and had decided to seek a home in the new world. She had hidden herself and the child in a dense hazel thicket and had been terrified when she heard the dogs. Fortunately, the scent was cold, and the dogs were called off. For a day and a night she lay hidden; then she made her way to a ship, in which she embarked with the child to America. On reaching America, she deserted the child, leaving him in the care of the captain of the ship, who adopted him. Before she left, she gave the child the name of SINGLETARRY because he was alone in the world and because he would remain (or tarry) in the new world. She shortly returned to England.

The above written and sworn confession of the nurse was believed to be true; and detectives were sent to America to investigate the matter. A young man was found bearing the name Singletary, whose age corresponded with that of the lost heir of the Dunham estates and who could give no account of his forebears. The captain of the ship on which the child was deserted had adopted him under the name that the nurse had given him, having no idea of his real name or lineage. And, the captain was now dead. Indeed, such care had been taken to destroy all trace of his name or ancestry that no one could say positively that he was the person sought. While he was believed to be the heir, the evidence was not sufficient to satisfy the English court and put him in possession of the property.

Such is the tradition that has been handed down through many generations of the Singletary family; whereever the name is found all over the United States, the family member is familiar with the story. There appears to be some truth in the story -- in a legal document that appears in the Archives of Massachusetts, recorded in 1702, the whole family is referred to as "Donham, alias Singletary." This record is quoted by Mr. David W. Hoyt in his, "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury." Be the tradition true or false, it is plain that the Singletary family belongs to the aristocracy of the old families of Amesbury, Massachusetts.

Spouse: Sussanah COOK. Richard SINGLETARY and Sussanah COOK were married about 1556 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.394 Children were: Amos SINGLETARY, Francis SINGLETARY, Mary SINGLETARY.

Richard SINGLETARY394 was born in 1590 in Salem, Massachusetts.394 He died on 25 Oct 1687 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusettes.394 [2170941singletary.FTW]

In 1637, he is listed as a "Freeman" living in Salem, Mass.
In September 7, 1638 he is listed as being in Newbury, Mass.
In 1639, he married Susannah Cook in Haverhill, Mass.
Susannah Cook was a sister to Col. George Cook, Joseph Cook and Phillip Cook of Cambridge, Mass.

Col. George Cook was a Colonel in the service of Oliver Cromwell's Army prior to his immigration to America.
Richard Singletary is documented as residing in Salisbury, Mass. from 1644 to 1652, where he was a planter and received land in the "First Division".
He was elected a "Select Man" in 1650 and reportedly "taxed decently".
In 1653, he moved back to Haverhill, Mass. where he became a planter and proprietor.
He was again elected a "Select Man" in 1655. He lived there until his death on October 25, 1687. Richard outlived his wife, Susannah, by five years as her death is listed as Aprill 11, 1682.
Richard was well educated by the standards of the day and a prominent member of the communties in which he lived. This is concluded from the fact that he was chosen a "Select Man" in 1650 and 1655 and that he and his children married into other prominent families of the era. By the early 1700's a number of Richard's sons and grandsons migrated to other areas of New England and the Carolinas. They migrated primarily to obtain land which was abundant and cheap at the time. Interestingly, Jonathan, eldest son of Richard (d.1687) and his family members changed their name to Dunham after moving to Woodbridge, New Jersey. Descendants of Jonathan continue to use the Dunham name today. Jonathan signed numerous legal documents as Dunham alias Singletary. The family is well documented in the early period in New England, but after the third generation, research becomes very difficult due to the lack of records and the duplication of names in the family.
What is known is that Benjamin, youngest son of Richard (d.1687), migrated to South Carolina in 1695. Benjamin's descendants are the origin of the family in North and South Carolina. Benjamin received a warrant for 300 acres of land near Red Banks,SC (Summerville,SC) on July 8, 1699. On November 4,1703, Richard Singletary, Benjamin's son, was granted a warrant for 500 acres of land in Berkeley Co. SC. Berkeley County is located in the ST. Thomas & ST. Denis Parish area. South Carolina jury list for the years 1718 through 1783 include the following Singletarys from ST. Thomas & ST. Denis Parish: Benjamin 1744; Joseph Sr. and Jr. 1744; Jonathan 1744; Britian(Braton) 1720 & 1731; Jonathan 1720, 1731,1737, & 1740; Benjamin 1740,1751, & 1757; David 1751 & 1757; James 1731; Joseph Sr. 1737; Joseph Jr. 1740 & 1757; John 1757 & 1767; Richard 1720 & 1757; Thomas 1757.
Jonathan, (son of Benjamin who migrated to SC) and his sons Richard, William and Joseph migrated to Bladen Co., NC in the Cape Fear River Basin in the early 1700's. They were associated with James and Maurice Moore and the "Goose Creek Faction" in the Tuscarora Indian Expeditions of 1712 and 1713. Jonathan witnessed a deed in Chowan Co., NC (Deed Book #1, No. 1032) dated july 30,1716 between Edward Smithwick of Albermarie Co. conveying 200 acres of land adjoining Nathan Moore to William Lattimer. Jonathan's son, Richard was granted 2000 acres of land in October 1728 in Bladen Co., NC. Richard also witnessed for Maurice Moore the conveyance of Lot. No. 9 of Brunswicktown to John Martindale on September 7, 1735. Colonel Maurice Moore was a leader of the "Goose Creek Faction", settled Brunswicktown and built Orton Plantation which he later gave to his brother "King Roger Moore". Jonathan's son, William, received a grant for 1200 acres of land in Bladen Co., NC in 1738 adjoining to his brother Richards land. Also, Joseph ( Jonathan's son) held land adjoining to his brothers Richard and William in Bladen Co., NC. Between the years of 1820 and 1850 most of the Singletary families in Bladen Co., NC migrated to Georgia, Florida and Alabama. They continued to move for land was still cheap in Georgia and public land was available in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.

In many instances, Thomas Co., GA, became the point of departure for those moving west before 1840.
