Garrett was is Charlotte, Eaton County, Michigan in 1927 and 1921

OBITUARY:

Garret Hobart Skinner, 69, of 111 E. Lawrence Ave., died January 4, 1967 at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday at Hayes Green Beech Hospital where he had been a patient for four days. Mr. Skinner was born October 23, 1897 in Mercer county, Ohio, son of James and Martha (Shock) Skinner. He had been a resident of Charlotte most of his life. Mr. Skinner was a bachelor, owned and operated an appliance repair shop here and was the watchman at the Charlotte Fire Dept. Surviving are two brothers, Charles of Charlotte and Lawrence ofSt. Marys, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. James (Mary) Curtis of Mesa, Arizona. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.m. Friday at the Pray Funeral Home. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
His was a big funeral - "Hobe" Skinner, who could handle handicap.
The funeral procession truned north at the Masonic Temple and went down by the stores of Lawrence Avenue of its way to the cemetry last January 6. It was not a mistake. It was the request of Hobart Skinner's friends in the business district. A friend to everyone and all were friends of Hobart. It was one of those"big funerals that such men deserve." That dangling leg was the result of polio at the age of three. That leg hindered, but "Hobe's" heart was big and stayed that way for 69 years. He always worked. He was not handicapped. He hada repair shop in with Smith and Edwards. He was also with the Miris Carroll Shop. Hobart was keeping books in Robinsons Buick Garage the year of that Fourth of July fire which took the life of one of Lawrence's mechanics named Flower. It was a flash fire and at its peak by the time the fire department arrived. Hobart dropped his crutches and drove a good Buick out to safety. Fireman looking to see if Hobart was safe found him on the grass across the street. Without his crutches he could not get back. He quit school in the ninth grade as he could not climb the stairs. One of the large tire companies took him to their plant and he was taught to operate a tire vulcanizing machine. Even with the bad leg he would remove a large truck tire, repair it and put it back on. A state Journal reporter found that out once and published a complimentary story in the paper. His repaire work on small electric appliances brought him many friends. He lived at the local fire department station where he was the dispatcher the last few years. He had friends in all the police and fire departments in the area. The local firemen were all in uniform for those last rites for "Hobe," a man with a handicap that he could handle. Parents: James Parkinson SKINNER and Martha Elizabeth SHOCK.
