The Hodges were natives of Wales and emigrated to America (exact date unknown) entering through a North Carolina Port. The families history, as told to John Wright (in 1956, when he was age 72) by his father-in-law, Martin K. Hodges is as follows: "It is known that four Hodges brothers emigrated to the colonies at the same time. one of these brothers, Thomas, settled in North Carolina near Hodges Gap two miles west of the town of Boone. Brother, John elected to cross the rugged mountains and cast his lot with the settlers in the fertile valley of the Watauga. As to the other two brothers we have no information. *John and Thomas joined the ranks of the Revolutionists and when the news reached the ears of their father in far away Wales that the two sons had deserted the Loyalist cause he immediately disinherited them.
Under date April 11, 1776, John Hodges Sr. purchased two tracts of land situated and lying in Washington County on the south bank of the Watauga River. These tracts consisted of 300 and 30 acres respectfully and were conveyed to John Hodges Sr. in one deed by Charles Carson from Notche Settlement of the Dominion of Spain. Both tracts were conveyed to Carson by the State of North Carolina(Carson's NC grant # 662, John Hodges was taxed in 1787 for said land) which bordered on the lands of the late Henry Richardson, now Crouch and the late Thomas Greene now James Ellis.
