Death: Peterson Family Cemetary Records (age 91), Obituary
James Peterson, son of Thomas Coates Sutton, changed his name after the
Revolutionary War. He was using the name Peterson by 1793. He joined the
British forces on 5 Mar 1778, but left on 25 Jun 1778. The exact circum-
stances of this are not known, but he was then a "man without a country,"
having refused to serve with the Colonial forces and deserting the British.
While his children are listed with the name SUTTON (or PETERSON)
they ALL used only the name PETERSON during their lifetimes. Affidavits
from descendants of at least four of his children verify that his name was
originally SUTTON.

SANDRIDGE FARM-Lewis Sutton, Owner

Lewis Sutton, one of the east end's progressive farmers and livestock dealers; decided to give a name to his farm, afteer finding out everything he owned had a name with the exception of the 160 acre fine upland farm. Hereafter his farm will be known as "Sandridge Farm." The name is derived from the sandy soil and the location of his farm, as it is over a ridge. 110 acres of the farm is under cultivation and 50 acres in wood and pasture. The cultivated part of the farm is one of the best producing places in that part of Sequoyah County. Last year he raised a bumper crop of cotton and corn. Like all other tillers of the soil the cotton did not bring much, but Mr. Sutton did not get discouraged and quit, as this year you will find him hard at work improving conditions on "Sandridge Farm" under the supervision of Mr. Sutton, nothing but pure seed is planted and naturally he raises more per acre than those who plant "any old seed." This year he did not plant much cotton, but has a large acreage of corn, potatoes, peanuts, peas, sweet potatoes, hay and etc. something to eat-- something for his table and something for his livestock. He uses nothing but modern machinery, the improved implements for the farm. Mr. Sutton's home contains five big rooms and is properly located on his farm, near a big spring that produces ice cold water during the Summer time. His barn is one of the best you can find in the Northeastern part of the county. The barn is not empty, but is always filled with food for the stock.
"Sandridge Farm" is located 6 and one half miles from the railroad, but he has a good road leading by his farm and the railroad station is easily reached in a short time. His postoffice address is Liberty as he gets his mail at that office. "Sandridge Farm" is a good farm-- pay it a visit and meet Mr. Sutton, it's owner. Parents: Mary SUTTON.
