Lord of Dunbar (from Kerry Trout [email protected])

James Todd: Laird of Dunbar. Captured in the Battle of Bothwell Bridge (near G lasgow on the River Clyde). Marched to Edinburgh and held prisioner with other s in an open pen into the winter. Loaded on a ship (the Crown) with about 250 o thers to be shipped to the West Indies and sold as slaves. Sank in a storm off the Orkney Islands. Could not escape, as the hold remained locked when the ship went down. Son John captured by Graham, but escaped to Northern Ireland.

Fol lowing success against the military at the recent Battle of Drumclog, the Conve nticlerssupport had
swollen to six thousand when they came together at Hamilto n in June 1679. Differences between covenanters which had undermined them throu gh the 1650s, again created factions among their numbers. While some argued th at their direction should be decided by a General Assembly which acknowledged t he established powers, others denounced the governing bodies and their Indulgen ces. Meanwhile, with ten thousand men and discipline, the Duke of Monmouth, th e Earl of Linlithgow and the vengeful Graham of Claverhouse mustered by the Cly de Bridge at Bothwell. On 22 June they attacked the disorganised Covenanters and won easily. Although deaths on the field were few, two hundred were killed later. Of the fourteen hundred who were captured or surrendered, another two h undred and fifty eight were shipwrecked while being transported in The Crown of London.

"Of t he Covenanters captured at Bothwell Bridge, 250 were sentenced to be transporte d to America. 200 of these were drowned in shipwreck off the Orkneys: 50 esca ped, and afterwards took part in the defense of Londonderry. Among those drown ed were Robert Todd of Fenwick and James Todd of Dunbar. . . . In 1679, the ye ar in which Robert Todd, of Fenwick, was drowned, John Todd fled from the perse cutions of Claverhouse in Scotland, to find refuge in the North of Ireland. Th e record of Mrs. Ben. RESEARCH NOTES:
John Todd was presumable a native of Scotland. It is a tradition of his
American descendents that he wore a lo oped up hat and buckskin breeches, with
long stockings and large silver shoe b uckles. He lived at Drumgare, in
Derrynoose parish, Co. Armagh, Ireland, and was buried in Tynan churchyard.

Derrynoose and Tynan were very ancient Irish parishes. The early Derrynoose
parish church stood in the townland of Lisata rkelt, in the part of the parish
that is in the barony of Tiranny. As early a s 1430 the provision made for the
vicar by the college of Colidei of Armagh, t o which it was appropricate, was
so small that no one could be found to accept the benefice. After the
Plantation of Ulster Derrynoose and Tynan were unite d by the Crown and became
one rectory. Nearly a century of dissatisfaction wi th the union followed, and
finally in 1709-12 it was terminated. Other charge s were made from time to
time. Derrynoose is now the rectory of Keady.

For more than a century before the Plantation the territory from Tynan to
Keady a nd from Madan church to Navanfort and the Blackwater was the heart
of the O'Ne ill's country. Tynan parish thus became the centre of the efforts
of the grea t Earl of Tyrone to preserve his supremacy, and of the Lord Deputy
of Queen El izabeth and King James I to rule the North. After the suppression
of the grea t rebellion of 1641 Tynan also became the centre of the efforts to
establish t he supremacy of the English Church in Ireland.

It appears both from his envi ronment and the provisions in his will affecting
the parishes of Derrynoose an d Tynan that John Todd was a Churchman, but the
fact that his descendants in A merica are Presbyterians may be accounted for by
the Presbyterian influences t hat surrounded them in Armagh.

The Presbyterian congregation of Tynan can be traced back in the record of the
General Synod of Ulster to 1691. The meetin g house was that now known as
Lisloony - the fort of O'Loony - which took its name from the townland in
which it stands. The townland obtained its name fro m the splendid
double-ringed fort crowning the hill overlooking Tynan. The co ngretation was
scattered over a wide district and embraced parts of the counti es of Armagh,
Monaghan, and Tyrone. It was known previous to 1702 as the cong regation of
Kinaird, now Caledon, taking its name from the principal town in t he district,
although Kinaird was in an adjoining parish. The Kinaird congreg ation
embraced the sounthern part of the barony of Tyranny in the county Armag h,
extending as far north as Eglish, and it included a large slice of the baro ny
of Armagh, extending to within a couple of miles of Armagh city and a like
distance from Keady. In Monaghan it took in the barony of Truagh, and in
Tyr one it embracced the territory of Winterburn, and extended to within two
miles of Aughnacloy. The Rev. William Ambrose was the first minister.

The distri ct in which Mr. Todd settled and where he died not only possessed a

John TODD7,51 was born about 1719 in County Down, Ireland.3777 He died on 27 Jul 1793 in Virginia.3777 Excerpt from "Historic Families of Kentucky," by Thomas Marshall Green, Reprint ed for Clearfield Co. by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, Md., 1996, ori ginally published 1889, p. 209-210:

"John Todd, the oldest son of Robert (th e emigrant) by his first wife, graduated at Princeton in 1749, a member of the second class admitted to a degree by that institution; was licensed by the New Brunswick Presbytery in the following year, and ordained by same body 1751. H e then went to Virginia on invitation of Rev. Sam. Davies, whom he assisted in ministering to the several congregations of which that patriotic divine was pas tor. Parson Todd for many years taught a classical school in Virginia. Taking an active interst in the early settlement of Kentucky, his great solicitude wa s to provide for the educational and religious wants of the emigrants. He used his influence to obtain from the Virginia Legislature the charter for Transylv ania Seminary, which was opened at the home of his friend, David Rice, in Febru ary 1785, and it was he who gave to that institution the first library ever bro ught to Kentucky. Though it is not known that he ever came in person to Kentuc ky, no account of the early times in the state will be satisfactory that does n ot commemorate his zeal and his virtue."

From "Todd Family," by Emily Todd Helm, Kittochtinney Magazine, published by G.O. Seilhamer, Chambersburg, Penns ylvania, Vol. 1, No. 1 (January 1905), pp. 73-75:
"JOHN TODD, (born in Co. Arm agh, Ireland, in 1719 -- died July 27, 1793) son of Robert and ------- (Smith) Todd, was brought to Pennsylvania by his father, in 1737. He was then a young man of eighteen years of age, and had probably received the groundwork of his e ducation in Ireland. It is likely that he was brought up in the communion of t he established Church in his native land, and there is no evidence that he ever studied at the Log College of Neshaminy. All that is known of his early years is that he was graduated at the College of New Jersey at Newark, with its seco nd class, in 1749, when he was thirty years old. There is a tradition that in early life he was a weaver. That he enetered college to prepare for the Presby terian ministry is clear from the fact that he was taken on trials by the Presp ytery of New Brunswick, May 7, 1750. He was licensed No.v, 13, 1750, and went to Virginia on the pressing appeal of the Rev. Samuel Davies, pastor of the Pre sbyterian congregation in Hanover, Va., who asked the Presytery when he entered on trials to endeavor to prevail on him to engage in the work in Virginia, whe n licensed. Davies had a large field, having seven congregations -- three in H anover, one in Henrico, one in Louisa, and two others then recently organized. In 1748 he sought the services of John Rodgers, just then licensed by the Newc astle Presbytery, but the General Court at Williamsburg refused to permit Rodge rs to qualify under the Toleration Act. In spite of such illiberal restriction s Todd determined to apply for license when a call for him was laid before the Newcastle Presbytery, May 22, 1751, and he was ordained for his work. He was m ore fortunate with the General court than Rodgers, who had been warned not to p reach in Virginia under penalty of a year's imprisonment.

. . . The charge to which Mr. Todd was called was known as Providence. It was in Louisa County, and comprised 'the upper part' of Davies' field. He was installed in November, 1752, the Rev. Mr. Davies preaching the sermon. He remained with this charge during his whole ministerial life, a period of forty-two years. Besides his pa storal duties he taught a classical school for many years. He became intereste d in teh early emigration from Virginia to Kentucky and used his influence to o btain from the Virginia Legislature a charter for Transylvania Seminary. Throu gh the Rev. Dr. Gordon, of Stepney, London, he secured scientific apparatus and valuable books that he gave to the Rev. David Ri Parents: Robert TODD and Ann SMITH.

"The old est son of David Todd and Hannah Owen, John, was educated in Virginia by his un cle, Parson John Todd, studied law, and became one of the deputy surveyors empl oyed by Col. Wm. Preston. He is asserted by John Mason Brown to have been an a ide to Gen'l. Andrew Lewis in the battle of Point Pleasant. He came to Kentuck y early in 1775, and was at St. Asaphs with John Floy and Gen'l Logan in the sp ring of that year. He represented St. Asaphs in the abortive attempt to establ ish the territorial government of Transylvania. In 1777, he was one of the fir st two burgesses sent by Kentucky Co. to the Virginia General Assembly. He suc ceeded George Rogers Clarke in command at Kaskaskia, and was for several years civil governor and colonel of the company of Illinois. When Bryant's Station w as besieged, in August 1782, Col. Todd was again in Kentucky. With such men as could be assembled at Lexington, and with the forces at Boonesboro and Harrod sburg, he marched without waiting for Gen'l. Logan with the well-equipped veter an fighters of Lincoln, and fell at the Blue Licks. While a Burgess at Richmon d he married Jane Hawkins, by whom he had a daughter. This daughter married fi rst, Col. Pierce Butler of the Revolution, and was the mother o f Major Thomas L., Gen'l William O., and Richard Butler, of Carrollton, and of the late Pierce Butler of Louisville.

Col. John Todd was the best educated a nd most accomplished, and is represented to have been the most richly endowed b y nature, of all the early pioneers and surveyors of Kentucky."

Excerpt fr om "History of the Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois - Centennial R ecord," by John Carroll Power, 1876:

"John Todd, under commission from Patri ck Henry, Governor of Virginia, dated Dec. 12, 1778, at Williamsburg, then the capital of the State, was authorized to establish the county of Illinois. He w as styled in his commission the County Lieutenant Commandant. As such he organ ized the county, and thus became in fact, though not in name, the first Governo r of Illinois. His first act was to issue a proclamation with reference to lan d titles, June 15, 1779. Nearly three years later he had been to Virginia, and on his way back made it convenient ot visit his family in Kentucky. While at Lexington, news came that the Indians west of the Ohio river were crossing over into Kentucky. Colonel Todd, as one of the commanders, was slain at the battl e of Blue Licks, August 18, 1782."

From Emma Siggins White, "Descendants of John Walker of Wigton," 1902, p. 56:

RESEARCH NOTES:
Brought to Pennsylvania by his father in 1737. He was then a young man of
eighteen years of age, and had pro bably received the groundwork of his
education in Ireland. It is likely that he was brought up in the communion of
the established Church in his native lan d, and there is no evidence that he
ever studied at the Log College of Neshami ny. All that is known of his early
years is that he was graduated at the Coll ege of New Jersey at Newark, with
its second class, in 1749, when he was thirt y years old. There is a tradition
that in early life he was a weaver. That h e entered college to prepare for
the Presbyterian ministry is clear from the f act that he was taken on trials
by the Prebytery of New Brunswick, May 7, 1750 . He was licensed Nov 13, 1750,
and went to Virginia on the pressing appeal o f the Rev. Samuel Davies, pastor
of the Presbyterian congregation in Hanover, VA, who asked the Presbytery when
he entered on trials to endeavor to prevail on him to engage in the work in
Virginia, when licensed. Davies had a large f ield, having seven congregations
- three in Hanover, one in Henrico, one in Lo uisa, and two others then
recently organized. In 1749 he sought the services of John Rodgers, just then
licensed by the Newcastle Presbytery, but the Gener al Court at Williamsburg
refused to permit Rodgers to qualify under the Tolera tion Act. In spite of
such illiberal restrictions Todd determined to apply fo r license when a call
for him was laid before the Newccastle Presbytery, May 2 2, 1751, and he was
ordained for his work. He was more fortunate with the Gen eral Court than
Rodgers, who had been warned not to preach in Virginia under p enalty of a
year's imprisonment. The following action was taken, Wednesday, A pril 22,
1752:
Present: Wm. Fairfax, John Bliss, Wm. Nelson, Esq., Wm. Dawson , D.D., John
Lewis, Thos. Nelson, Philip Grymes, Peyton Randolph, Richard Corb in, Philip
Ludwell, Esq.
John Todd a dissenting minister this day in court to ok the oath appointed by
the act of parliment instead of the oath of allegianc e and supremacy and the
abrogation oath, and subscribed the last mentioned on oath and releated and
subscribed the test and therupon on his motion, he is al lowed to officiate as
an assistant to Samuel Davies, a dissenting minister, in such places as are
already licensed by this court for meeting of dissenters.

The charge to which Mr. Todd was called was known as Providence. It was in
Louisa county, and comprised "the upper part" of Davies' field. He was
insta lled in November, 1752, the Rev. Mr. Davies preaching the sermon. He
remained with this charge during his whole ministerial life, a period of
forty-two yea rs.

Besides his pastoral duties he taught a classical school for many years. He
became interested in the early emigration from Virginia to Kentucky and us ed
his influence to obtain from the Virginia Legislature a charter for
Transy lvania Seminary. Through the Rev. Dr. Gordon, of Stepney, London, he
secured scientific apparatus and valuable books that he gave to the Rev.
David Rice to aid in founding the seminary.

Mr. Todd was for many years a leading man in the Presbytery east of the Blue
Ridge. He was o Parents: Robert TODD and Ann SMITH.

Fro m "Robert Stuart and his Descendants," by Robert Stuart Sanders, 1962:

"Majo r General Levi Todd was one of the defenders of the fort at Horrodsburg; he af terwards assisted Logan to hold Fort St. Asaphs at Stanford, Kentucky; was maj or, colonel, brigadier and major general of Kentucky forces till his death in 1 807."

Excerpt from "Historic Families of Kentucky," by Thomas Marshall Gre en, originally published Cincinnati, 1889, reprinted for Clearfield Co., by Gen ealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1996, p. 212-213:

"Levi, third son of D avid Todd and Hannah Owen, was born in Pennsylvania, 1756; was educated with h is elder brothers in Virginia; with them studied law, became a surveyor, came e arly to Kentucky, and at first seems to have been one of the defenders of the f ort at Harrodsburg; afterward he assisted Logan to hold St. Asaphs. He was st ationed at St. Asaphs when he married Jane or Betsy Briggs. Afterward, he fort ified Todd's Station, in Jessamine, whence he removed to Lexington, where he wa s a purchaser at the first sale of lots, 1781. He was a clerk of the first cou rt of quarter sessions held in Harrodsburg, spring 1777; was a member of both the Danville conventions of 1785, and of that of 1787. When Fayette Co. was f ormed, he was appointed its first clerk, and held the office until his death in 1807. He was a lieutenant under George Rogers Clarke against Kaskaskia, and V incennes; was with Logan in the attack upon the Indian town when Bowman's pani c thwarted the well-concerted plan; was major of Logan's Lincoln Co. regiment, and participated in two other expeditions against the Indians of Ohio and Indi ana; and was a major in the hottest of the fight at Blue Licks, where his gall ant and gifted brother fell. Afterward, he became brigadier and then a major- general. Those military titles were won by actual service; his reputation w as secured by real and hard fighting. A solid, substantial, enterprising citi zen; a sensible, intelligent, well-educated man; a consistent Presbyterian; a valuable and faithful public servant; a good soldier; - of course he was re spected at a time when those qualities were most useful and honored. Gen'l. Le vi Todd and Jane or Betsy Briggs were the parents of 11 children. After the d eath of his first wife, Gen'l. Todd married Mrs. Tatum, by whom he had a son - James - the father of Dr. L. B. Todd, of Lexington."

Excerpt from "Centenni al History - History of Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois," by John C arroll Power, 1876 (https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ilsangam/1876/todd.htm):

"Levi Todd, the youngest of the three [brothers], was engaged in the early Indian war s in Kentucky, and was a lieutenant under Colonel Clark in the expedition that left Corn Island, opposite Louisville, and captured Fort Gates and the village of Kaskaskia, July 4, 1778. M. Rocheblave, the commander of the fort, was so m ortified at his having been surprised and captured without firing a gun, that h e would not accept any courtesies from his captors, and was sent under a milita ry guard to Virginia. Lieutenant Levi Todd commanded the squad of soldiers who took the prisoner back. He afterwards acquired the title of General, was cler k of the second court of Fayette County, Kentucky, the greater part of his life , and lived and died in Lexington."

From WFT #3603:
"Appointed clerk of Fay ette County Court (1780-1807) by Kentucky's first
governor, Isaac Shelby.
