(NOTE: Chambersburg and Scotland are in Franklin Co., PA, which was created 1784 from Cumbe rland Co., PA.) (1i) Albert and his brother Hugh settled in the SE part of Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania , near what is known as the Conococheague Settlement, near a stream of that name.

(1d) 1758, 13 Apr: Richard Bard's place in York Co. (now Adams Co.), Pennsylvania was raided by India ns, and he was carried away into captivity. The Indians proceeded towards the mountains, whe re they picked up a child, Thomas Potter, and murdered him. After crossing the mountain, the y passed the house of Albert Torrence. Seeing him in the dorrway, they shot at him.

(1) Dumbarton may have been named afte r Dumbarton, Scotland, which was the capitol of early Scotland, then called Alcluyd, or Dunbr eatan, Hill of the Briton.
(2) Served as 1st Lt. in Company 8, Lurgan Twp., Franklin Co., PA, under Capt. Rea during t he Revolutionary War. John Kincaid served in 1779 as Sgt. under Capt. Patton in a company fro m Letterkenny Twp.

Gives to wife Elizabeth; to son Hugh Torrance; son James , the tract where he dwelleth; to son Albert, all that tract of land whereon I dwell, includi ng my stone house, orchard, barn, including 200 acres of land, together with all farming uten sils; to son William, all that tract of land situated on the north side of the land bequeathe d to Albert, being the remainder of the tract; to daughter Isabel Ferguson, 20 lbs; to daught er Mary Wiley 5 shillings; to daughter Jean Torrance, a horse and saddle, bed and furniture w hich has been called hers, and 40 lbs., and a room in my stone house until she is married. Re served a bond of 60 lbs. due by Samuel Perry and a bond of 40 lbs. due by son Albert to be ke pt at "Justice" for wife, the interest to be paid to her yearly.
